- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now cross-reference the UPC codes with my zip code and give me the best prices. Google could pay the masses to gather this data.
- Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I worked at RadioShack (no space actually) we had a couple of boxes of the CueCats laying around and we modified them all the time. Different LED's, data lookup, different housings, we even hooked it up and used it with the Point of Sale software, which for that purpose was a simple text converter (which is all a barcode is), but the numbers actually mean something. First grouping is manufacturer, and the second if I remember is the actual product.
As to the UPCdatabase.com it didn't find the first thing I typed in (a pack of cigars), and it let me enter in what the product was. Now unless they confirm what I entered (857908000980) the database could be loaded in with bogus data. Though verifying everything that has a UPC I don't think would even be feasible. - JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha speaking of cue cats i have a hacked version of it that reads normal barcodes and just spits out what it is... good for making a book your password ^.^ not saying that any oreiley books laying around here are my password...lol
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Postino, I was just gonna mention that I still have a CueCat in a box
somewhere. I wonder if it can be hacked to submit its scans to Google now? - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll digg this just for the product you have in your example :)
- Vankalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are a lot of "hacks" that use the cuecat to put UPCs into programs. I've used catnip to enter all my DVDs into DVDProfiler.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Speaking of the product used in the example...

- willij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a CueCat and I use with http://www.imediaman.com. But it is no longer a free program. But it is way cool. You can cds or books and it pulls the info from amazon.com and the book art and album art.
- neilsly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg for the example in the OP - but I'm a cigar buff like Koskun but 076622285026 is probably more my style.
- Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds pretty cool, I'll have to give a try.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It works with UPC-A codes (12 digits) but doesn't work with UPC-E codes (8 digits). Try 02827029 for example. Works on the UPC Database, but not on Google.
- tvh2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As pointed out earlier, Google's had this for a while now...
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's been a while since they start doing that. But yes, it's cool...
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google recognizes that the number entered is a UPC then directly links to a site that does UPC lookups, in that site's special format, regardless of if that site has an entry for that UPC or not. Much in the same way that lookups for UPS packages are done. It isn't based on indexing and matching against pages on UPS' site. Rather, that the code entered is a UPS shipping code, and therefore, passes it onto the UPS site search function for handling.
- AnalogDaylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo has been doing this for years
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes. "UPC Code" is redundant. [UPC=Universal Product Code]. But this makes a nice addition to the number of outside sources that Google directly references. And I'm glad the UPC Database will be getting a boost out of it.

Great idea filovirus. I was wondering what a practical use of this might be. Combining the UPC database, eBay or Froogle, and Google Maps could prove to be interesting... - ego_slam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fun stuff, though I'm not sure what it is about being a price checker at Wal-Mart that is so fun, but I've just wasted a half hour on it, so there must be something there!
- yugiohdan6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes very old news....
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooooooooooold news.
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This ain't a new feature, but digg+ anyway.
- aeio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Needs more centaur.
- kitykity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see I'm not the only one who remembers the CueCat. :) Unfortunately, I don't still have one to play with.
