- shout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20The tag cloud idea is not new and wasn't created by Digg.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16cool++
useful-- - OutcastJiob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Technically Digg doesn't use a tag cloud. Sites like del.icio.us do.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its a very old idea much older then web 2.0 nonsense. Sometimes the same trick starts to feel better over time for some people.
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gotta love how under US, the biggest words are BUSH, followed by GUILTY...
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I wonder where they got that idea? ;-) Digg+
- fserb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The problem is that, normally, there's more than one story related to each tag.
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the neatest part of this is the way it highlights related tags when you mouseover. You can see what's going on very quickly.
- subtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right about one thing Josh: that is way, way better.
- sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has done at least twice before. The first to do it is still the best:
http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm?layout=0&selected=us&categories=world,nation,business,technology,entertainment,health - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://newzingo.com/ ?
- r3zim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cool idea but it needs work, red mouseovers gave me seizures
- liquidcoooled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've seen that farmers field mapping before and thought then it looked awful.
This news cloud is great and the best thing is the related links on rollover, an outstanding and very intuitive feature.
To explain, I always want to zoom out and see more of the map than I can see, I don't see the point in squashing things up, its like standing too close to the supermarket shelves. I prefer to step back. - Dysanovic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised that "google" is not in the Sci/Tech cloud, but it is in the Business cloud.
Are they starting to lose their tech focus? - tommajor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not google's, it's made using google news
- rlamoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is kind of fun to hover over a word and then read the words that light up in red as a headline.
Sometime these headlines are accurate:
"Moussaoui asks withdraw guilty plea"
Sometimes they are not:
"CDC study pledges Harvard virginity" - JoshD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/ seems like a much better implementation than Google's. The NewsMap interface stuffs all of the popular news stories into a grid and sizes them relative to their popularity.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3How is this useful?
- liquidcoooled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The easiest way to make your own cloud is to put the kettle on.
It will just be a small one though, for additional scale, you could try running the shower or some kind of sprinkler arrangement from the hot tap.
In reality, to build a cloud you need a database containing tags and frequencies, simply list alphabetically and map the font size to the most used tags. - counterplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1alecks, dreaming about balanced news again? :)
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a tag cloud -- They're not claiming it's a new idea, because it's not. The new idea is applying it to google news.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Put a space after the URL. ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/ ) Also, where does flickr highlight other tags when you hover (over) one?
- GreenLantern33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can I make my own cloud? Anybody know of a good tutorial?
- AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@OutcastJiob: While the digg engine doesn't use a cloud, you can change your view. I guess you're right and wrong...
http://digg.com/diggall/cloud/ - somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice touch with the rollovers.
- MrDark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bigger word mean more popular, and bigger word catch your eye first, so save your time to go thru all the articles
- SerialMartini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This works really well! A few slip-ups, but for an automated system its pretty impressive.
Defenitely +digg. - MonkeyBoy87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is also an interesting use of google news - sizes and colours based on article strength
http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/ - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1tenbyten is cooler in mouseovers. Did I just wrote "cooler"?
- WaterSoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks somewhat like a brainstorm where you can see linked ideas. Pretty nice!
- gtbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://newzingo.com for even more languages / other countries news
- salamanders, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm is way better - nice use of a treemap too.
- saintsvol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems more based on the website tenbyten.org where they search out newstories and generate pictures associated with the top 100 words found/searched. This google thing seems like a text only rip off of that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Neat idea, but I can't find myself ever using it. I thought news was about stuff happening that I do not yet know about, they have it kinda backwards i think.
- cfinke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No it's not; the biggest words when hovering on US are Bush, President, Iraq, Iran, and UN. Stop trolling.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Because, idiot, the biggest news here is the trial of the 9/11 Terrorist (among a billion other trials). And you are either found Guilty or Not Guilty. Either way, the word Guilty is present.
- MrDark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/) already used it 3-4 years ago, what a thief.
- gopal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Awesomeness! Way too cool!
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2It would be cool if there was a version that linked directly to stories instead of just topics
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1useful--;
- MrDark, on 10/12/2007, -17/+0It steals the idea from Flickr.com http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/, flickr.com already used it 3-4 years ago, what a thief.
