- flashboy131, on 10/10/2007, -2/+65More storage is great, but the upload and downloads speeds in the US limit their use. I mean we get crap speeds for what we pay.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+54Oh, good. I can keep my cracked Microsoft product ISOs right on Microsoft's own servers. How will they know what "secret_rebel_alliance_files.rar" is unless they unpack and search it? Does Microsoft guarantee privacy or not?
- rhylan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34We win?
Yahoo! - guardianzero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28We win until the government starts peaking around.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28These companies built profiles from your data. You won't appreciate privacy until you lose it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Simple keep your cracked stuff from MS on Apple
And keep your cracked version of OSX on MS
Just remember the title, you win! - Bartboy919, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20You could always add a password to the rar file...
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Yeah... something like 5 - 10 years prison.
- dawgma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I think your confused about the difference between upload and download speeds. Although your download may be 3Mbps, I bet your upload is either 256Kbps or 512Kbps. Your upload is how fast you can transmit data. Your download is how fast you receive it. You may be able to download at 3Mbps, but it will take you at least 6 times as long to send that same information out yourself.
Here in Ontario, I just found out I can get up to 16Mbps... but the max upload is only 1Mbps. I could care less about the 16Mbps download. 6Mbps is fast enough for me right now. But I would love to see upload speeds that are at least half of my download.
Upload speeds need more attention. Low upload speeds are the reason your voice on Skype doesn't sound right. It's the reason your webcam resolution really only outputs 320x240. It's the reason it takes forever to send large email attachments. It's the reason why Bittorrent has yet to become the universal means of transmitting large files everywhere. It's half the reason why the internet sucks in North America. - Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20I think the whole online storage would have been really useful before USB storage, pen, thumb, drives whatever you call them, I used to use yahoo folders, but yeh after USB storage took off i just stopped with the online storage.
- StepJoe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I see what you did there.
- Verdanic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9There's something to be said for the greatly lessened chance of losing your data (dropping/forgetting your USB drive somewhere), but there's also something to be said for the disadvantage that is instant denial of access to your files without a connection.
- helikopter, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13buried for the term "uberservice"
- kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11640k is all anyone would need, anyway
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11There's something to be said for copying at 480 megabits a second vs. my crappy upstream rate.
- rhylan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8never mind...
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I think you'll find Google, Apple and Microsoft all have a similar agreement re. privacy and your lack of it, and will all bury it under a mountain of legalese.
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9"If only we could combine them into one uberservice"
You must work at MS.
Competition is healthy for the consumer. - TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Crappy thing for us in Australia, is our telcos are so crap, that we cant even get unlimited bandwidth, so really, online storage is not a viable option, at the moment.
- Mysk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Just encrypt the files. You can PGP encrypt the file before uploading it, or you can use something like iOpus Secure EMail Attachment to create a self decrypting archive (though iOpus has a flaw that reveals repetitive passwords, so you'll need to be creative).
Failing that, you can place your rar, 7zip, or whatever inside of a TrueCrypt volume and upload the TC volume.
There are ways around their prying BS. If it's none of their business then don't let it be their business. ;-) - IcerC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6All you can't abuse it or yahoo will punish you. ..I believe by disabling your account.
- drewjoh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I'm getting 8Mbps down (with 16Mbps bursts) and about 380Kbps up... for $30 (introductory price)... you price still sound good? Now people in Japan getting 100Mbps connections for less than $50... now do either of ours sound good?
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6:insert favorite webhost here: offers :insert ridiculous amounts of GB, usually in the 200-400gb range: for only :insert any number here, usually less than $10/mo though:
and gasp, I can access all of it with any ftp program. Hell, you can even fire up netdrive and map your ftp server as a drive letter on your computer. Doesn't get easier than that! - uselessexpert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And we give up more control of our own information, letting it just hang on a server which is supposed to be "secured."
Don't think. I'll keep my important files in my hard drive... - kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You store your ***** online? I use a toilet.
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5why is this guy being buried? you only need to look at the state of your internet service to realise competition is a good thing
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It's not a bunker, it's his command center!!!
- Mysk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You think that your 3Mbps is good until you realize that France has 100Mbps for about the same price that you're paying for 3. Seriously.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Aren't there RAR password crackers out there?
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4there is no such thing as 'unlimited bandwidth'
they either cap your rate or cap your breadth... I wish they'd outlaw 'unlimited' in the uk - duzytata, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Who do you people get your broadband from? My only two options are Comcast which offers 6Mbps at $42.95/month and 8Mbps at $52.95/month. Or AT&T (current phone company) which offers 6.0 Mbps at $34.99/month or 3.0Mbps at $24.99 *cable is an extra 40 bucks*... I"m getting shafted while the Japaneses practically have porn on demand with their speeds.
- eecan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yahoo owning over 80% of the market? I don't think so, hell, I don't personally know anyone that uses Yahoo as a primary e-mail service.
- qcfb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ajbrady's comment - sarcasm.
knowyourrights - sarcasm in response to sarcasm making the same point.
Nossie - more sarcasm?
Error 732: Sarcasm buffer overflow. - estvir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I actually meant to type 'Mother's basement' but that could also be considered his command centre. ;)
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your thumb drive can't do 480Mbps (nor can your USB 2.0 port, if you actually test it). But I get your point. There needs to be a serious upgrade in the availability of bandwidth (particularly upstream) before online storage can really take off. At the moment it takes literally half a day for me to backup 1GB of stuff online - vs a few minutes to an external drive (of any kind). I realise Australia is a backwater when it comes to bandwidth, but even in the States you guys would have trouble uploading a GB in less than an hour.
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3have you ever actually tried using 350 - 400gb of it? I can see you suddenly getting kicked off or being put on a half mb pipe :P
- mojibyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sure you win, they get to store more and more information all about you on their systems....so go ahead and fill up every gigabyte you can with your photo's, movies, blogs and all other data you want us all to see and big brother to keep track of for you, and hopefully they will give us even more and more and more and more
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think people may have not noticed Apple's reason for giving so much storage. Leopard is just around the corner with Time Machine and .Mac would make a pretty good backup option for many people. Sure you can't backup your entire music or movie collection but for really important stuff that you can't easily get back if your HD crashes it will be enough. I'm not sure if Time Machine can currently back up to .Mac drives but it'd probably be fairly easy for Apple to do it.
- Maczek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Zing!
- idugcoal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Too late for that, I'm afraid. The US administration sees itself as invincible, and I wouldn't put anything past them. Paranoid? Maybe. But how many times can you catch someone in a lie before you start thinking they might not give a damn about you?
- raseel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Firstly, unless bandwidth issues are resolved, a massive online storage option is hardly of any use. So out go the personal desktop users. As for enterprise users who actually have the bandwidth, theywill never store secure company data for nline storage
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2where? i could use some 1GB CF cards
- sameeraperera, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Before you complain, please visit my country and experiance the real crappy value for money.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I read the Terms of Service, they demand your kidney and first born! :o
You guys were right, how could I ever doubt you?! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if you don't like their lack of privacy, don't give them your data. buy your own hard drive. sheesh. common sense.
- raneka, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This is wonderful news for on-line storage....at least until Google (Do No Evil) decides to discontinue the service and you lose everything...like what's happening with Google Video. You get what you pay for...unless you actually paid for any Google Video's.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Australia's not a backwater when it comes to speed though. The fastest internet I can get is 4mb/1mb while you guys can get 24mb/something ADSL 2+.
/Australian abroad - stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The revolution will not be telegraphed!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1exactly, and i think losing your entire music collection is a high enough risk not to want to take.
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The point I was trying to make is that this is not really news...
