- arrogantprick, on 11/18/2008, -5/+147I thought it was an Onion story from the headline. Continue to lead Google, please just let the sheep follow.
- elhaf, on 11/17/2008, -7/+138Oh noes! People didn't know they wanted Google before it existed; now they can't live without it. This seems like a rapid downward departure from the Google mission. People are stupid; a google is not.
- Trifold, on 11/18/2008, -6/+68Oh thank God...I've been staring at Google Maps for hours thinking "When the ***** would anyone ever use this???"
Addendum for Diggers without humor: /s - sirjimithy, on 11/18/2008, -4/+58I've found A LOT of Google's features handy. I think many people don't know about them or aren't quite ready for them yet. Don't put the company down for being ahead of their time.
- kyleandstan, on 11/18/2008, -4/+36I wish Apple would do this with the IPhone!!!
- Dalhectar, on 11/18/2008, -0/+26Google's creative Lab works becuase the engineers believe in their products, and come out with something useful. They don't make a half hearted attempt to appease a lot of people. Make good stuff, and you'll find an audience. Worked for every other google product. Why stop now?
- skoles, on 11/18/2008, -2/+28Finally. Anonymous tranny porn searching.
- SidewinderX2, on 11/18/2008, -5/+26YAY! Who uses gmail, google maps, google earth, google docs, and most of all google search anyways? Finally, something that i can use! :D
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -6/+26Actually want? Does that mean we're finally getting Google Butt Scratcher!?
- Cglass, on 11/18/2008, -1/+21It shows how in touch with reality you are when half the comments regarding your article mention mistaking it for something from The Onion.
- Finalreminder, on 11/18/2008, -0/+19I want a pizza
- Merky42, on 11/18/2008, -0/+18"If I'd asked my customers what they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse."
Henry Ford - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+19Google only has information you make available to them.
- jamestwisleton, on 11/18/2008, -2/+19Perhaps sir you are forgetting Google Lively.
- sourceholder, on 11/18/2008, -1/+16[The] Google
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+15BUTT SCRATCHA??
- lowtolerance, on 11/18/2008, -0/+13wow...geocities is still around?
- DCGUY12, on 11/18/2008, -0/+13Yes, congratulations, you're the fourth person here to say that.
- ProfBagelwood, on 11/18/2008, -1/+13"Google may roll out features that people actually want."
This overlooks the fact that Google is a company that people actually like. I always loved how Google was so inventive. The whole thing with letting their employees spend 20% of their time just doing whatever they think will be interesting has produced an enormous amount of wonderful things over the years, a lot of them useful, some not so useful, but always lovable. - gametavern, on 11/18/2008, -0/+12I'd rather them inventing things I didn't know I wanted, until I had them....like they're doing now.
- roctimo, on 11/18/2008, -6/+17Paranoid post is paranoid.
- lowtolerance, on 11/18/2008, -0/+10if i recall correctly, ads were a lot more annoying before ad-sense came along.
- indoracer, on 11/18/2008, -5/+14Reads like an Onion headline.
- DougieD, on 11/18/2008, -2/+10I think google's primary goal is making money - it's a for-profit business. IMASUPER is definitely exaggerating a lot, but the point is Google owns quite a bit of sensitive information so it's definitely worth thinking and talking about. There could be a lot of scenarios where that sensitive information could leak (ala AOL search) and cause quite a big fuss.
THE MOST DANGEROUS CORPORATION IN THE WORLD IS THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT, NOT GOOGLE. /punx - theOster, on 11/18/2008, -3/+11i'n mot sure i entirely believe that google engineers just develop and refine without thinking of an audience...
- Q8Jin, on 11/18/2008, -1/+9I can't wait for the Google porn search engine... wait.
- Cglass, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8heh, you're an idiot, heh
- MoralThreat, on 11/18/2008, -4/+12Tin foil tight enough there?
- MrJagil, on 11/18/2008, -1/+8Also Google Off Jerker would be nice.
- image0434, on 11/18/2008, -1/+8Shut up, headline
- jnuffnuffnomnom, on 11/18/2008, -0/+7Google Bittorrent would be nicer
- fctd, on 11/18/2008, -9/+15Article title made me think this was an Onion article at first
- daschupa, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7Granted, there have been many Google apps that are useless to the majority of users, but it doesn't mean that they are useless apps.
- SidewinderX2, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6ok, half the time, people don't know they need something until someone comes up with it.
Take webmail in general. Before free webmail like hotmail/gmail/yahoo/etc, ppl had email accounts tied to their ISP subscriptions. When these free webmails came about, people were suddently like "OMG HOW DID I EVER LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT IT?!"... and yet, before that, people lived their life perfectly fine. No one demanded webmail, because no one knew that they would want it.
I'm just saying that asking people what they want, although good for fine tuning what you already have to be more user friendly, is a terrible way of creating new and interesting things. - alexhhhh, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6i always thought it was the thing in clocks that make it keep time
- StupotAce, on 11/18/2008, -1/+7They're looking to kill Google Engineers' ingenuity and passion for what they are working on.
- RizzoFrank, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6Definitely, I can usually pickup when a headline is going to be an onion article and this one had all of the characteristics.
- lowtolerance, on 11/18/2008, -0/+6seriously. stupid ass words, always think they know whats best
- Tenlow, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5Isn't an Addendum the thing that hangs down in the back of your throat?
- worseforwine, on 11/18/2008, -0/+5No I think it is a string of islands in the Atlantic
- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -2/+6Hey Google, how about working on and opening up registrations for Grand Central?
- lowtolerance, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5i'm no conspiracy nut, either, but i have to agree with you here.
just wait until a case comes up where they have to turn over a bunch of peoples gmails accounts, and heads will start rolling. - imasuperDOTcom, on 11/18/2008, -4/+8@roctimo & Moral Threat:
What's paranoid about this?
Thinking Google has WAY too much information and puts that information at risk is hardly tin-foil hat material.
Quote:
"before people start crying how about how I’m over-dramatic and a google hater, it’s important you understand my real concerns. My primary concerns are this:
Google is NOT transparent and upfront about it’s privacy policies
They don’t spell out their retention time length, and even when other nations have forced them to, they set new retention times which are still unreasonably long.
Google’s Motto is Do No Evil but sometimes, it’s out of their control
Take for example the battle between Google, and Viacom. Google, who has a tendancy to maintain all data (Gmail, Search terms, queries, maps, locations) indefinitely, was Sued by Viacom over copyright infringement in regards to YouTube videos. Google was forced to hand over logs and records indicating all IP addresses/users/persons who had ever viewed youtube videos, and which videos they viewed.
Recently, Viacom and Google came to an agreement in which they would no longer provide ‘personally identifiable’ information in the logs, but the records handed over would still contain unique identifiers, in the event Viacom was “forced to determine individualized fault“.
I pick on Google because they have not yet chosen to put it’s users interests first. If they did, they wouldn’t log everything, forever, without disclosing how long that might be. Because the truth is, no matter how “Unevil” they try to be, sometimes it’s just not up to them. If the courts can force them to turn over information for simple copyright infringment of television shows, what can more powerful government entities and legal battles force Google to turn over?"

http://www.imasuper.com/160/technology/google-prov ... - inactive, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5I see what this article is saying, Google has a lot of ***** software that people don't use. But so what? I'm sure there's at least one person who uses that web page thing they were doing.
I personally only use Google Reader and gmail. And that nifty search engine of theirs. - Rivetgeek, on 11/18/2008, -1/+5Now can this be retro active and remove that retarded side tab thing on google/ig ?
- skoles, on 11/18/2008, -0/+4Hot FWD axle on diff DP.
- EricSchC1, on 11/18/2008, -0/+3The previous 10 comments that sounded the exact same as yours would suggest no.
- plosfas, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I'm pretty sure it's the distance that the tooth of a gear sticks out.
