- Br0wn, on 11/24/2007, -3/+35I'm waiting for them to get to Amsterdam where you can catch a glimpse of the ladies in the windows for sale.
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -1/+28Ok, so I live in Calgary, Canada. In mid-september, I was walking home from a long day at university (engineering), and as I started walking up my street, a car passed me that was the exact same car model used in the states for street view, and it had a structure on top for the camera! I almost ***** my pants! I had never heard of them doing this in Canada yet, so I was absolutely stunned.
My street is shaped like a backwards "P" and he went all the way to the top of the street. I decided to take a left and stand there and wait for him to come by so I could have my picture taken :) It just so happens that I bought my engineering sketchbook (12"x18") that day, and I had wrote my name in big black letters with a sharpie on the cover, when I was in class. So there I am, standing there, t-shirt and jeans, a backpack, and this sketchpad with my name written out big on it, and I was standing there at the bottom of my street.... waiting.... about 5 minutes goes by, and I realize that there is no way that it is coming back down the street, so I decided to walk up to the top to see where this car must have parked. It was nowhere to be seen. Somebody on my street-- living only a couple doors down from me-- must have a google streetview car in their garage. Sadly, one of the most thrilling days of my life. I sure hope i'm in a picture. That would be kickass - kafitz22, on 11/24/2007, -3/+28I forgot for a second there that Canada was overseas from the U.S... Damn that Northwest Passage...
- jacquesm, on 11/24/2007, -2/+10your impression of Amsterdam does not match reality. Also if the google car should make it to the 'wallen' I fully expect some junkie to make off with the camera in about ... 6 seconds.
The area you are referring to is very small, it is hard to drive a vehicle there because the streets are so narrow. It's mostly pedestrians, in equal measures pimps, locals and tourists. - a3r0, on 11/24/2007, -2/+9Please point to where in the United States Constitution it says that taking pictures in a public place for mapping is not allowed
- andrewcsayer, on 11/24/2007, -1/+8Also spotted in Melbourne. (http://twitter.com/raena/statuses/439094692)
- chubs512, on 11/24/2007, -1/+6one step closer to world domination
- MikeonTV, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5In Toronto you'll notice all the beautiful Churches on Queen St. and all the beautiful Queens on Church St.
- a3r0, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5There's already a site that does this for Toronto, but without the fancy-pants flash interface. http://www.virtualcity.ca . I wonder how they can deal with the privacy issues but Google can't.
- Supurcell, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4Free will has nothing to do with this, DragonGirl724. Nobody is stopping you from doing anything. The issue is privacy, but you can't expect 100% privacy while you're standing around on a public street with other citizens who want to exorcise their free will by snapping pictures.
- WillyWonka, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3I had a car with the thing sticking up out of the roof while I was out riding my bike. The street isn't covered on virtualcity. I wonder if it was a google one. It looked awfully makeshift though.
- riyehn, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3Yeah, VirtualCity has been doing this for a while. It's always fun when a streetcar takes up the whole frame. Looks like it will have some competition soon though; I saw one of these cars on a residential street in Willowdale about two weeks ago.
- eschreib, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4Anyone have a link to an example of: "..., if you see a car like this, try and walk around it as many times as you (the cam part is a spherical digital camera) for amusing duplicated-you shots."?
- piesforyou, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Maybe your impression of Br0wn's impression of amsterdam does not match reality.
- pmichaelson, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2The other day, some friends and I were hanging out at the loading dock behind the building we work in on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and we saw the Google car drive by with it's camera mounted to the roof and everything. We thought it was kind of strange that they were allowed to visually map-out a US military base for posting online.
- BleedingEars, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2I remember all the funny and weird images that came out of the first "trip". I am interested to see what they caught on film in other countries.
- Tredici, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Maybe your impression of jacqu... ***** it
- OisinT, on 11/24/2007, -1/+2I wonder if they plan on coming to Ireland while they're near.
- Heavypettingzoo, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1i live in HK and street view here would be amazing. Everything looks the same when you walk down a street trying to find a building...it would be nice to have a very specific land mark ahead of time
- OisinT, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Well they're trying to be a multinational company, not a US company. Like I was wondering if they were going to map out Ireland as well... it would make sense, but they don't always do what makes sense.... they ARE a company trying to profit. An example is that there is much more detail in the maps for the UK than there is for Ireland - that being said the Google European Headquarters is here in Dublin, NOT in the UK.
- n3lly, on 03/07/2009, -0/+0I've seen the car drive down Northumberland Rd in Dublin 4. Bright orange thing with a roof rack with at least 6 cameras pointing in different directions.
- a3r0, on 11/24/2007, -3/+31. My name is a3r0

3. That's nowhere in the text of the constitution or any of the amendments. Google is a corporation and not part of the government, so they have nothing to do with the constitution. - TheSabre, on 11/25/2007, -2/+1Once again, Google starts another project while the Street View in the US is half-assed. Why not add other metropolitan areas in the US before expanding to overseas? Why not finish Google Transit in other areas of the US? Why does Google always start a project, put it in beta, and then rather than expanding on it, they just start a new related project?
- MortalCoiled, on 11/25/2007, -1/+0It's good to see America exporting something other than liberals to Canada.
- Hayaemsay, on 11/24/2007, -6/+4nevermind, digg down.
- w3torg, on 11/24/2007, -4/+2Streetview in a lot of different countries will be a nice way for those who can't travel to get an (mostly) uncensored peek at the rest of the world from a tourist's perspective.
- IceX, on 11/24/2007, -4/+2Lame, very lame.
- jacquesm, on 11/24/2007, -6/+3at least someone gets it.
- DragonGirl724, on 11/24/2007, -12/+2a3ro, to answer your question:
Invasion of Privacy.—Governmental power to protect the privacy interests of its citizens by penalizing publication or authorizing causes of action for publication implicates directly First Amendment rights. - DragonGirl724, on 11/24/2007, -15/+2keep diggin me down *****, if you like being recorded against your free will, then you're a god damn moron.
- DragonGirl724, on 11/24/2007, -18/+3these street cams are totally wrong, invasive and f you live in America - unconstitutional. just another gimmick to surveillance the public. we got enough eyes on us already. ***** google street cams.
