- BenAppleton, on 10/12/2007, -11/+65When is it coming to Australia?!
Disclaimer: I work for Google's Sydney office. - drm237, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33That's cool, but it's worth pointing out that local.live.com has had traffic for the past few months...then again that site was copied from google maps, so it's just a vicious circle...
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37Dammit! There's no colorblind mode!
When companies come up with something like this, using red and green to indicate two totally different things is a terrible idea. At my last job, 8 out of the 10 people in my group were colorblind. - underthelinux, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25No details for why there's traffic? Both Yahoo Maps and Windows Live show where an incident is, its degree of severity, and what has happened. And they have it via RSS ( i think from local pds).
Overall, i'm not impressed by google's effort here. - groupofone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=32.681435~-88.346404&style=h&lvl=7&scene=1915478&vendor=google&pkw=ms%20maps|570822991
See an example above of maps.live.com w/ Traffic overlay. Better than Google maps. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27I prefer local.live.com over Google maps, but I think a little competition between the two will benefit everyone.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18As soon as you get traffic in the outback.

/comment abuse - ashukg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21bleh! Live maps has had it for months now.
It's a pretty useful feature though...
http://maps.live.com - sedo1800, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Where is it getting its data from?
- levarnus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yes.
- bsongo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yahoo maps is the best. click on live traffic. it tells you if there is an accident and it pulls information from the chp reports
http://maps.yahoo.com/index.php#mvt=m&q1=los+angeles%2C+ca&trf=1&lon=-118.222332&lat=34.064179&mag=6 - VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11There is a Kansas City, New York? ;-)
- fotoman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Most likely the data is coming from the govt agencies that monitor the road sensors.
I worked at Keyhole 3 years ago (the company that Google bought and gave you Google Earth and Google Maps), and they had real time traffic at that time in a development version, but that was the summer that Google walked in the door, so a lot of the cool stuff was put on hold to integrate into the Google world :) - dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Keep bringing it. Love the Metro stop add on recently implemented.

RIP "trafficgauge.com" - joerod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i wish there would be a google maps mash up for NYC that shows parking restrictions and alternate side of the street parking. that would be sooooo sweet!
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Green-Go
Yellow-Caution
Red-Stop
just a guess..... - dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Swift2 "As soon as you get traffic in the outback."
That isn't such a bad idea... If we move all the traffic into the outback we won't need traffic reports for our clogged city roads...
Oh yes, we have cities... Big ones... With electricity too...
Also Kangeroo's / Koala's don't roam around the streets,
The only time we have heard "Shrimp on the barbie" is in an American accent,
And no one in their right mind drinks that urine substitute otherwise known as Fosters - TWiTsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you live in Southern California or certain areas of Northern California and Arizona (like, Phoenix), the website http://www.sigalert.com gives great and very detailed up-to-date traffic information for all freeways.
- seoul_scurry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@cJw314: Oh really? What about Yahoo! pipes and answers, how well does google stack up there? Google rocks yes... however being an arrogant fanboy doesn't, it just makes you look like a gsheep.
- jfinke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, there is a KC, MO and a KC, KS. Locals refer to them as kcmo and kck.
The large city that most people think of when talking about KC is KC, MO. However, one of the most populated suburbs and "wealthy" is a suburb in KS. - basictheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like how the colors span the sections of the roads, rather than just a marker. The lines need to be somewhat transparent though.
Yahoo and MSN have had traffic for quite awhile too, also showing construction and accidents. - Tanglefuzz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I need Google Earth navigation in my car!
http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2006/01/google_earth_fo_1.html - eggstylin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Also, it seems like Google just overlaid the traffic images. You can't tell what freeway you're looking at. So, how does this help me?
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@signal15
if i could digg you twice i would.
i have a real hard time telling the shades of red/greed they used apart, and as such, I won't really use the new feature. - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a great idea but the chart for Phoenix is ~20% complete. The local DOT has much more accurate info.
- gadgetboy32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yahoo! already has it. Been there done that. Next!
http://maps.yahoo.com - ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@griffindj
just something to think about: if they include real-time traffic in their directions they give, they'll not only have to ask you: are you leaving now or later? but also if you have a 5 hour trip through 3 cities, they'll have to predict the traffic 2 hours from now when you pass through city X, and 4 hours from now when you pass through city Y. personally i would prefer them to give me directions and also give me traffic, then i can make my own decision as to whether to take an alternative route.
also i just thought of something: google isn't always perfect, it'd be a pretty humorous situation when, because of traffic, google tells you to take an alternate route that wrongly ends up being a dead end. and when you show up at that dead end, you see 4 or 5 people all sitting there looking confused--all sent there from google. - griffindj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@saska
Everytime I get stuck in a jam I take out my bb pearl to see how far its backed up. Its always been accurate with regards to speed and the duration of the jam. I live in Washington D.C. btw.
I just wish they will include the real time traffic into their directions so that if it's backed up on the beltway they give you an alternate route. But I guess that's a version 2 feature. - blake213, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8That's the whole point of competition, isn't it?
- underthelinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also, yahoo finance >> google finance.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Green = 45+ mph
Yellow = 25 to 45 mph
Red = 0 to 25 mph - amalik49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This has been on the mobile version of Google Maps for months. Kind of backward-assed that they didn't do it online first. It's actually decent.
- OddTSi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Actually Live Local has had traffic for more than just a few months. I would say probably longer than a full year.
- spoonman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is not really a Google thing. Google's (and Microsofts, and Yahoo's) map data is provided by NAVTEQ, who recently acquired Traffic.com. This is just a result of using NAVTEQ's updated real-time database information. Any maps provider using NAVTEQ can access this feature, and potentially the PND makers in the near future (Garmin, TomTom, etc).
- arroganttroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Maps Mobile has been reporting traffic data for at least 6 months now, in addition to doing pretty much everything the web version does. It rocks! Make you sure pay attention to the road first and foremost.
Point your mobile phone browser to: http://google.com/gmm - jjesusfreak01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google Earth in a car wouldn't take that much. The palm version of Google maps has had traffic data for a while, and it can also do directions. All it really needs is a GPS tie in, and you have a really good navigation system.
- Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Which cities are covered? Click here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Los+Angeles,+CA&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=4&ll=37.020098,-106.171875&spn=38.041048,99.84375&layer=t
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Would love to see something like this for Google Earth!!!
- tuc11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is deff gonna be on the iphone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the Vista Gadget of this for local.live.com. http://virtualearth.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2BBC66E99FDCDB98!8138.entry
- fotoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty sure it will be a layer in Google Earth.
Google Maps is derived from Google Earth. I already mentioned this in an earlier comment, but I worked at Keyhole 3 years ago (the company the Google bought and gave you Google Maps and Google Earth), and they had real time traffic data for the Bay Area in a development version back then. I'm sure it's not that far away. Although, you might need one of the 'pay' versions :) - saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@amalik49 -- Ironic. I have it for my mobile Google Maps too, but it's garbage. Nothing like looking at a solid green line on a freeway where I have time to look at Google Maps traffic on my Blackberry because I've been at a dead stop for 10 minutes.
This is in Seattle. Also ironic. - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Cjw314: You haven't used Yahoo! Maps have you?? It's ok, you can admit it.
- bigpappasmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty good, Looking out my window I see bad traffic on the highway in front of my office and traffic's not moving, well refreshing the map, the highway is now red. Nice.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Be thankful you have them asshat. I'm in northern cali and when 101 backs up, I'm completely *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it never comes to australia, google hates us
- TravisS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In other news. Boston Police bomb squad blew-up a bomb-like device that was chained to a stop sign, finding out later it was only a speed meter for Google.
- eljaysun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hooray for living in Kansas City!
