- aywwts4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+53As sad as it sounds, this really was my dream for google maps. I wrote them about it three times. Since I like to travel at a more leisurely pace and avoid highways. I'm pretty happy.
- badjoke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27I've also been thinking about this in the back of my head. "Wow, that'd be cool. Too bad it'd probably be too difficult to implement..."
I applaud you, Google. - Th3Chicken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1
Exactly, i just notice a new checkbox Avoid Highways, sweeeet!
- badjoke, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27I've also been thinking about this in the back of my head. "Wow, that'd be cool. Too bad it'd probably be too difficult to implement..."
- SpeedyG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It's good to see that Google Maps is being significantly improved again, and not just for the biggest metro areas. I was starting to use Mapquest because it had highway exit numbers where Google Maps didn't, and now they've gone and finally fixed that. This new feature is pretty darn cool... effectively, they've added customizable midpoints to the route.
- mporcheron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1They have had midpoints for a while. But you had to the small and very well hidden "Add Destination" on the left.
- qwickone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3this isn't exactly the same thing. Plus it's MUCH easier to use.
- mporcheron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1They have had midpoints for a while. But you had to the small and very well hidden "Add Destination" on the left.
- sancho320, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15THAT IS EFFIN AWESOME!!!!!
- daviddiaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The one feature i'd like to see in google maps is for the lines that you draw in my maps to be able to be measured. That is, for it to tell you how long the lines are
- coasterswim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Just download Google Earth. It's been able to do that forever.
- phervers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9you can measure with maps, go to http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?mapprev=1 you can find distance measurement tool there

Heh. Road trip, anyone?- arktos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hell yeah I'm in. That route goes right through the middle of my home town. Pick me up on the way through!
- SniperX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3hmmm, he might have to add another stop to the route to pick you up.. I'm not sure if he's willing to do that. Obviously he's trying to keep the route as OPTIMAL as possible.

- kjcdude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I've always wanted this, thank you google!!!
- SniperX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4WOW, i've been WISHING a mapping company would add this feature for AGES. It makes it a MILLION times easier to say "NO STUPID, I don't want to take the most jampacked freeway in existance, I want to take this freeway that's 5 miles out of my way but wide open"

- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Hey Horme, your Son Lycos stole my dirt bike yesterday. Between that and your daughter Webvan stealing my credit card applications from my mailbox I'm beginning to wonder if moving in next to you was a bad idea.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think his name is actually Hormel, which would explain naming children after companies. I will give him this, though: Google and Hormel are excellent companies.

You're on Digg... you don't nor will you ever have a baby. Unless you purchase or steal it.
Oh who cares, no one will be able see this comment.- Archeologist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2and nobody cares. Especially me.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You could just rename the current child.
- iChaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3better hurry before an attention-seeking celebrity does it first!
- conquest, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No way man ... we came up with a much better name yesterday "Thor Vader" ... nobody will mess with that kid!
- idreamincode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+213That has to be one of the best features I've seen on a map in YEARS! Good work google!
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Indeed. I'd really like to have an option to consolidate all of the waypoints into a concise set of steps when I drag the line. All of the yellow waypoints really screw with the flow of the directions.
- superpotential, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2all my dreams would be true if google brought back mapquest's old "Avoid highways" feature which is extremely useful for cyclists
- sneeka2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Actually, it's there. Top left.
- spacebar14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Of course, Hollywood has had cool features like this for years (cough CSI cough).

- eddiddiums, on 10/11/2007, -1/+143I have been dreaming of this moment ever since online maps started. Finally I can correct the stupid directions that Google tends to come up with.
- romperDug, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4If you're correcting google about the routes that it's coming up with it begs the question, why are you asking google in the first place?
- Ageroth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3because he doesnt have a road map of the world?
- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13EXAMPLE 1: alot of tiimes it will give me directions that force me to go the shortest route. the shortest route takes me through town instead of the expressway, and takes me down a road that has a stoplight at every corner and is like a parking lot all day long. the expressway route takes me only 2 more miles out of the way, but shaves 20 minutes off the drive.
EXAMPLE 2: lots of times i can see it taking me down a road i know is bad, but i don't know the surrounding roads too well to make a detour on my own. would be a pain to try to punch in fake addresses trying to make my own waypoints to get me around the pain in the rear to drive on road.
EXAMPLE 3: sometimes you know the address of where you are going, and where you are starting, but you know you need to make a stop near a certain mall along the way, so you just drag the line over to the mall.
i have also been wondering when one of the map companies was going to add something as obviously needed as this.- SniperX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Or conversely, google maps would return that the best way is for me to take the toll road, which is not the best way in my opionion. I would rather drive for 10 minutes longer and save my $3.50 each way.
- eddiddiums, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks for posting that. You saved me the trouble :)
- Brss45, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I wish google could use this feature to determine what people's most-preferred paths are, or for correcting routes that aren't correct.
I got directions to someone's house and google told me to go from S. Grener Ave. to N. Grener Ave. ......it's a right-turn only lane, with a stop sign, 15 feet from an on-ramp... 30 or so from an off ramp.
See: S Grener Ave @39.952470, -83.122150
(Google told me to go straight across West Broad to N Grener Ave.) - scottie924, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So you mean now you can correct it when it gives you driving directions of swimming across the Atlantic?
- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2ya, now you can drag it to the bottom of the ocean, and it will tell you to hold your breath and walk.
- romperDug, on 10/11/2007, -15/+4If you're correcting google about the routes that it's coming up with it begs the question, why are you asking google in the first place?
- chazcron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51this would have made it easier to prove my route home from vacation was better than my brother-in-law's last week
- mattvogt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50Simply amazing. Great innovation.
- GasPoweredGnome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ever use streets and trips? Yeah... This has been around for awhile. I'm glad google has added it though

- archlich, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3This just in, google acquires InGen.
- Artifez, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36It works well, but I have come to expect that from Google.
- quikboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3I expect the best from every company, including Google, Yahoo!, and Windows Live. Each company has made something innovative for their map services.
- quikboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What's so bad about this comment? It was just a compliment to Google.

- K-Flow, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2wow i was just thinking of a service like this yesterday
- vudicarus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yeah me too! I was thinking about the iphone's mapping and traffic data and how one could change routes and how that might be done.
- IpsoPhatso87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Very simple, yet incredibly useful idea. Thank you Google!
- chubbybubba, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I swear this is what God does....You know, when youre late for that meeting...or you just need to get to the airport on time......
- Berrex, on 10/11/2007, -22/+3wai u so ghey??
- judbeasley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I second that.
- Berrex, on 10/11/2007, -22/+3wai u so ghey??
- Ninnux, on 10/11/2007, -2/+56Wow...that is impressive programming
- lowerlogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's not much more impressive than what it did before. Instead of just finding a path from A to B, when you click on the blue line in between A and B it makes a new waypoint, C, and finds the path from A to C and from C to B.
What would be impressive programming is if you could place lots of waypoints all over the map, and tell Google to find the shortest route through all of them, like the travelling salesman problem.- BigFloppy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think it's the front end programming rather than the back end stuff that's most impressive. Sure mapping A to B and B to C is relatively simple, but managing to display all that within basic web protocols and javascript is pretty damn clever. They'd have no problem implementing multiple waypoints and finding the shortest route; that seems like a very likely upcoming feature if they are made aware of a demand for it.

- samgab, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13I want it to give me distance in KMs!!! Stupid Imperial system.
- MrSketch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It does give distance in km for countries that use km. I plotted from Rome to Venice and the distances were in km. But yes, it would be nice if we could switch between them.
- samgab, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2True, but I'm in New Zealand, which operates on the metric system, yet the results still come out in Miles... Go figure!
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1and nicer if they gave estimated times for each segment taking longer than 3-5 minutes.

- FadieZ, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Cool, i kept getting dead ends
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -2/+72One of those things which, while seemingly simple, requires immense effort to get right.
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13This is just sweet!
- tsukiyo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Very awesome and useful feature! Nice work as usual Google! Man, I wish I could work there!
- mlazarov, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9This is a really nice addition, but my computer just isn't fast enough for all the JavaScript so I have to use Streets and Trips, which also has this.
- Zapple, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0I was typing something long to say what the point of this actually is, but figured I would get dugg down anyways. Bury me.
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Which is much less of a pain in the ass...Google succeeds because of its simplicity: dragging a blue line much easier than inputting stops.
- trajomoreno, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1'Bout time...
- cambrown99, on 10/11/2007, -8/+48Just in time for the iPhone
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7How coincidental.
- myfanwy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1you just pinched this from reddit....the locations and route are the exact same. makes a change, could have been /.
awesome stuff from google though- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1And a lot of stuff from here ends up on Slashdot or Fark the next day (prolly reddit, too, I don't use that site, though), and vice versa. Free flow of information, does it matter how many different sites have it as long as people are being made aware.
- 52tease, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Couldn't have dugg the original story submitted four hours earlier, eh? Hope you feel like a big man now.

this is a long over-due feature that i've been awaiting for some time.
praise teh google. - colonelpanic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I saw this this afternoon when i got directions for a support call, pretty neat feature.
- andrew522, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3great. now I can change my route when it screws me over from construction.
- jeffyjones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6We were messing with this just today at work, and we assumed it was always like this. We were looking to measure distances for our commutes, and the way Google gave directions wasn't always what we actually drove.
Insanely cool stuff. - griz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Cool!! Right click on a destination to zoom in/out, center or delete it.
- case116, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Great tip. It's pretty misleading when you drag the line and suddenly the trip looks tons shorter. You gotta scroll down and ad up the times, or just delete the middle stop.
- Light11, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4it ***** up sometimes. how do you delete a point youve chosen?
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Right-Click
- gimpbully, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hit delete on the left hand directions bar
- Loyaleagle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I want to do this like every other time i use google for big trips....now if it only works on the iphone.....
- Ishiguro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Woohoo, one of the suggestions I sent google was actually used. It was all me!!!?!
- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, I sent a request to them as well, probably over a year ago.
- jhshukla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1btw i sent in the request for scales.
no, don't bury. i swear i did. may be 3 times.
- radial, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I wanted to try the google maps swim across atlantic trick with this thing but I cant seem to get it to come up with directions for new york to england.
- Schnep97, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow. I just tried the same thing to no avail.
- ccgg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Too bad they've disabled the swimming feature. I wanted to do laps across the Atlantic

- PURDooM, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Doesn't work on mac, tried it on IE and it worked fine. :(
- Motobike_man, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I just used it in Safari and it works fine
- das7282, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm trying it on my PC with Firefox 2.0.0.4 and it doesn't work. But I tried it in IE7 and it works fine... apparently still a little buggy.
- jeff303, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Works in FF 2.0.0.4 on Mac here
- PURDooM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hmm, apparently I suck then.
- uhbeta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Works in Camino also...
- FluffyArmada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hey, at least he's man enough to admit it. Try deleting your ~/Library/Safari folder... might save Bookmarks.plist.
- Motobike_man, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I just used it in Safari and it works fine
- GernBlanston, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1For the most part it works great, but trying to route yourself onto a highway is impossible. I'm sure it will only improve. Bravo!
- antiver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sure you don't have "Avoid Highways" checked?
- aussiedood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Sure you can. It's no different than dragging to any other road.
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Any keyboard shortcuts?
- antiver, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1ty Google!

Change your route just by moving the blue line! Way to go, Google. Live Maps has had this feature for awhile. Nobody cares about that, of course. But it's great to see Google Maps move forward a bit.
- 80hd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3MS isn't to concerned with making it known then. I've been playing with maps.live.com and have no idea what your talking about. Their site keeps trying to push software though.
- phervers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Hmm, just launched live maps to check if it does and i can't find it anywhere. Other thing is live maps doesn't understand my addresses (in Poland) while google does perfectly. So i'll stick to google.
- afruff23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Does it work for Google maps on Windows mobile?
- realwx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Will it have an option for infinite u-turns?
- partriv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i have been waitinf for this for a long time
- samgab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3does it know about "no right turn"s and "no entry"s etc? We'll see, I guess.
- PURDooM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It does. (Been watching the GPS scene for awhile)
- afex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*whew*
thought i might have to actually look up from my phone while driving. now if only it could tell me whether a light was red or not...
- sammykeyes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2This is neat. It's kind of slow and laggy though at some points. But overall, it's cool. I think I've seen this before in another application, but I can't remember the name. It was just like this. Oh well. At least Google moved forwards with their maps.
- master_of_fm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11first drag n drop on my netflix queue, and now this. today is a good day
- jester55, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2finally
- runner108, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3I love that google doesn't just let a product continues to develop products rather then let them go stagnant just because it has reached some level of success. Cheers!
- mporcheron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So, when was the last time Google Directory was updated? It still doesn't have Google Accounts, the new Google link bar and says "(c) Google 2005".
Google only develops the products that are the most popular and thus can be monetised in the future.
