IL - Charles Mound - 1235 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been on Greylock, Mansfield, Washington and Katahdin. Go New England! (PS I can see the war monument atop Greylock from my house)

I hate when land masses argue with me. - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Either New Mexico or Colorado have two highest points, and Oklahoma has none, or the map is wrong."
That's right; the entire state of Oklahoma is exactly the same height above sea level. - jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've hiked Mt. Mansfield and Mt. Washington (VT and NH respectively)
- ArchivalQuality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Continental US.. Cali walks away with the win.. w00t.."
14,494 feet tall.. Aww.. How quaint.. - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's funny.. I took a Cass scenic logging train to Bald Know, and could have sworn that the sign said that it was the hightest spot in WV. It wasn't nearly as high, as Aspen, Colorado, where I went on business one time. I got short of breath walking up a few stairs, and had to sit down~~~ I was young too.
Now I get short of breath walking down the steps to the mailbox. hehehe

OK - jonohull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here in Wisconsin the highest is Timm's Hill, yet we also have a Rib Mountain. The hill slopes so gradually, I guess it's not qualified to be a mountain.

planning CO in March this year - valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jus10case: "Black Mesa is what they teach here in Oklahoma as the highest point in OK...it's on that map but the pointer for some reason ends up over in Colorado..."
It is correct in GoogleMaps:
http://maps.google.com/maps?sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=41.767874,70.136719&hl=en&q=black+mesa,+OK&btnG=Search&cid=37062500,-95677068,5272210481414745050&li=lmd&z=14&t=m
However the page at geology.com (which is what this digg links to) must have the coordinates wrong, because it actually shows up in New Mexico, if you zoom in enough. - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Bastards! They don't even have a point in NJ.""
"Umm its called High Point New Jersey."
technically it's High Point State Park =P - DiggedBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077 comments so far and no moxy fruvous reference?

Too bad the jealously eats at you so.
Digg? - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The highest point in NJ is aptly named high point, i think its like 700 feet.
- valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn digg refresh... Sorry about the duplicate comment.

Any other country in the world with a lower highest mountain than that? :-) - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The highest point in connecticut is in massachusetts. interesting.
- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ooh, too slow. maybe i can redeem myself by making some reference to gordon freeman.

Black Mesa - 4,973 feet - wehrmanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Either New Mexico or Colorado have two highest points, and Oklahoma has none, or the map is wrong."
Doesn't look like it's in the state but...
Oklahoma
Black Mesa - 4,973 feet - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone on Digg actually ever been to any of these? I've been to a few, some more scenic than others (Hawai'i, California stick out). If so, you should post some links to some Flickr photos or something.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jason_coleman/51365991/ - showstoppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it bad when the highest point in your state is called a "mound"?
- sgtpinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All you yanks should cruise over to Australia on Google Maps, just to see how little Google cares about us *sob*. In Europe they at least have street names...
- jus10case, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Black Mesa is what they teach here in Oklahoma as the highest point in OK...it's on that map but the pointer for some reason ends up over in Colorado...
- midtown95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea! florida has a hill over 2 feet!
- AverageJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Continental US.. Cali walks away with the win.. w00t..
- okvol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The tower at Seaworld in Florida is the highest structure in that state, at 400 ft.
http://www.seaworld.com/seaworld/fla/ama_sky_tower.aspx
And, any so-called mountain that is under 1000' is misnamed, as it should be called a hill or other mound. The difference there is origin - a mound is man-made.
Oklahoma has the highest hill, at about 987'. Black Mesa in OK has warnings: poisonous snakes abound, and the nearest hospital is 42 miles from the parking area. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brecourt_Manor: Or, you could just run the Badwater Ultra from Death Valley up to Mt. Whitney. Then you'd truly appreciate the insane amount of elevation change over that (relatively) short of a distance.
http://www.badwater.com/ - djtripp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And remember, Alaska is in the continental US, just not the contiguous US.
- Mojave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"deepgorge.com gives Beaver Mountain (hehe) at 6,260ft as the highest point in Oklahoma while geology.com gives Black Mesa at 4,973ft. That's a pretty big difference. Who do I believe? Wikipedia agrees with Black Mesa, by the way."
They both seem to have data discrepencies. geology.com has Mount Frissell as the highest in Connecticut, while deepgorge.com has Bear Mountain, which is also what wikipedia has. Who do I believe? hehe - Mojave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pales in comparison to http://www.deepgorge.com/maps/peaks.html
- nneonneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need Canada :(
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Deputy_Doodah: Sounds good to me. One of my souvenirs from The Big Island was a set of USGS topos. Kind of geeky, and they don't shed much light on answering my question for sure, but cool all the same.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Huh? Iowa has a highest point? I thought the entire state would qualify, being completely flat and all.
- Raemi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"what about texas!"
It's on the NM/Texas border... Guadalupe Peak - 8,749 feet - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0listrophy: "Huh? Iowa has a highest point? I thought the entire state would qualify, being completely flat and all."
Highest point in Iowa: top ear of corn on George Smith's prize winning stalk of corn.

Umm its called High Point New Jersey. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We are sorry, but we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region."
What a funny name for the highest point in Tasmania. What language do they speak there, because in English that sounds like... - freshfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Useful! Now i know the best place to jump from!
- Brecourt_Manor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0California is amazing.
The highest point in the Contentious United States "Mt Whitney 14,494" is only 60 miles from the lowest point in the Contentious United States, Death Valley at -282 feet.
Anyone who has driven the 395 through Bishop knows the great views you get. - valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know people who's yard has more elevation change than Florida. Portland, Oregon's downtown has more elevation change than Florida. :)
- stoutat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in Kansas - and it's not listed... the title should be "Google Maps Highest Point in ALMOST Every State".
- amartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 >>Has anyone on Digg actually ever been to any of these?

http://www.cohp.org/images/collective/superhighpointer.gif - Deputy_Doodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@super_structure:
The island is actually the tops of the two mountains. It's just that they're so close together, they've kind of merged. The same thing is the case with Maui. It's also the top of two mountains that touch. I think the reason you can't say these two mountains are now one (I'm no geologist mind you) is that they have structures independent of one another and they were formed separately.
Anyone's input on that?
You can see a crude topo of the Big Island here:

Reminds me of the time I had the sad duty to inform an eco-freak that the Florida everglades was not a mountain range resplendant with all of God's beautiful creatures, but instead a hideous smelly swamp with death's door knocking that should promptly be paved over with concrete.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The highest point in Washington DC is Fort Reno Park (429 Feet). It beats Florida!
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deepgorge.com gives Beaver Mountain (hehe) at 6,260ft as the highest point in Oklahoma while geology.com gives Black Mesa at 4,973ft. That's a pretty big difference. Who do I believe? Wikipedia agrees with Black Mesa, by the way.
- aegreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0North Carolina has the highest point on the east coast.
- SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been to Charles Mound in Illinois. My uncle made it his life's mission after he climbed Mount McKinley in Alaska that he was going to hit the highest point in every state. When he was in the area to do Illinois, he let me come with. It was off in the middle of a farm. We were actually chased by a bull on our way back. Dumb story, I know...but it was pretty cool. There was a marker on the exact spot...every state has one.
