- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As long as the ads remain relevent. I do not want 36 McDonalds icons popping up on a map if I was looking for directions to Burger King. The ads should be targeted to searches. If I search for Fast Food, then I expect all those finds, but should be restricted to particular zoom levels.
- L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3more importantly:
I'd hope that they wouldn't be printed out. Would kind of stink to miss your turn becuase of a large Starbucks ad over the instructions...
I'd also hope that this feature was limited or toggle-able. There are times where I am in a rush to get out the door, and the ads were just be another mili-second that is added to my (already late) driving time. While other times I would hope to see what is in the neighboring areas so that I can plan accordingly.
**New idea for Google: map public trans locations/stops. - ntnwwnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google's main revenue comes from the ad space they sell. It was only a matter of time until they started doing this. Good for them.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't believe the Digg zealots are actually going for this. In major metropolitian areas, you're eventually not going to be able to see the map at all. F*king stupid idea....
- doyadigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to flame, but it's interesting how people complain and install adblock because they hate advertisements, yet when google does it, you hear, "good for them." I guess it's better than some because it's focused to what you're searching for, but it's still an advertisement. And more ads now just leads to more ads in the future.
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As long as it is done right, I think it's a great idea.
I often use Google to search for local stuff, and sometimes it just doesn't work well. - nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pretty cool, I'm all for it as long as it doesn't get cluttered and it does not affect speed dramatically.
- Benny623, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a good idea for them, but it could kinda suck to have adds all over the place.
I wouldn't expect it to be too extremely cluttered, though. - theHM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, you don't want it to start looking like milliondollarhomepage
- person, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'd be nice to have little Starbucks or Safeway or Borders icons on the map if I search for them.
- SteveIreland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds like you only get the add when you hover over the location. What's the big deal? I would rather have a little Burger King logo representing a Burger King store location than just "Burger King" written out. Adds and symbols are immediately recognizable. Seems practical and handy to have something like this in place.
To me Google is a leader in discreet, well done, and well implicated adds, and I don't see this new developement as straying from that trend. - ericab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1L0phtpDk: "**New idea for Google: map public trans locations/stops."

W.I.P - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well usually i don't block google ads and any other text ads, but this could get annoying quick if you're trying to find something, and a pile of what amounts to popups appear in your map feild
- Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully, the CustomizeGoogle extension will add the option to block these ads.
Google usually just uses a subdomain for their included contents. For instance, to block chat in gmail, all you have to do is block chatenabled.gmail.com. Maybe there might be some script to block, but they'll figure it out. - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of strange that just yesterday I took a marketing survey for Google Local that was asking questions about ad placement, if it was too much, too little, etc. I guess they got their answers they wanted, and I got my $10 Amazon Gift Card.
- kden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pretty cool idea.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many times are you in a rush to get out the door to some place you've never been? Perhaps I should pay a little more homage where it's due; On the road again, goin' places I ain't never been. :) Happy google localing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But what stops the entire map being covered with little balloons to the point at which you can't see the map? I can see it already, the entire map will be covered in Viagra balloons.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This was announced back in Jan when David Galbraith first noticed it.

It was up back then (the advertisements) and I wasn't too fond of it. - vampirical, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damnit! This last week I've been in the planning stages of developing something like this on top of the google maps API myself for a site I'm designing. Grrrr, well maybe at least they'll make it available as part of the API.
