- nottanner, on 12/20/2007, -0/+11Doesn't this make sense?
Why wouldn't they do that? - phixed, on 12/20/2007, -2/+7This has been common knowledge for years...
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2It's possible that at the very heart of the google, lies a 'neural net prahcessah. a learning cumputah'.
- daniel2e, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2The article seems to suggest that the only use for such data is to determine results for the specific queries in question. That's a silly idea, since there is such a large space of potential queries. The more likely scenario is that Google is amassing a base of training data, allowing them to optimize the structure and weighting of their ranking algorithm using any number of machine learning techniques. Another possibility is that the contractors are providing an active reinforcement learning environment, allowing Google to use online learning techniques.
- sirloin, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2ever find something hard to search for?
I mean lets say you dont know crap about the net and specialised sites..
how would you find say info on the movie "go" or "blow"?
have you tried to search for specific info from the first iraq war?(yeah i can but can you imagine your grandmother?)
or how about
how fast i would have to drive to keep up with the sun?? surely every kid has wondered - fkr3, on 12/20/2007, -2/+4It's not trippy. Trippy is when your shoelaces are untied and you fall down a flight of stairs.

- hugoguzman, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1It's just a form of QA if you ask me. Looking at a snapshot(s) of search queries allows for a better perspective on the overall health of the engine.
- sgtpppr, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Meth is bad.
- daniel2e, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1And then you became an adult, and realized you can't drive on the ocean.

- bxblox, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1wonder what they do when they come across a query like: "How to murder the president" or "Bomb making for dummies"
/i just got myself on a terrorist watchlist didnt i..... - adachan, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1My girlfirend was doing this years ago. Paid about $15 per hour as I recall.
- HonoredMule, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Well now, do you want Google to be a search engine, or a "think for you" engine? Happily (and I do mean happily), the latter is not possible.
...and when I was a kid, wondering exactly that, I had the sense to realize that the key piece of information I needed to figure that out myself was the circumference of the Earth, followed by a conversion from "units of distance per day" to "units of distance per hour." - conansmithee, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Well that's an easy one. They haven't advertised for US raters since last year, but you can do this.
Send your resume to: rater-info@google.com with a subject of "Quality Rater - Referral – Temporary"
The pay is $15 an hour with a 10 hour weekly commitment. You can work a max of 20, but they usually allow 40 after your their for a few months. You must have a bachelors degree or they will deny you right away. - theOster, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1and your head is bashed apart and your shoes ultimately fall off
- NikoK, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Where can I fill an application?
- HonoredMule, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1On second thought, I imagine that a vehicle traveling that fast would skip over water surfaces whether designed to or not...
- adachan, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Its all in the test you have to take to get the job. Something very similar to that specific example was actually used in the test.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1How much does google pay them?
- pengas, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1It is called quality rating. Search for EWOQ and you will be happy.
I've been doing this for a while, mainly for curiosity as the pay is *****.
It makes sense to hire consultants that master languages other than English, fine-tune the ranking and result algorithm and stay up to par with content. Seriously, the web is evolving so rapidly each day, content takes different shapes and forms, you HAVE to do some QA on the algorithms. The nicer part is learning about the ranking process (an 80 pages PDF that I cannot share, sorry).
The goal is clear if you missed it - to better the search results. - marshallk, on 12/20/2007, -3/+4This is kind of old news, but it's still totally trippy.
- AnonymousCow, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I may or may not know that book and it may or may not be sitting in my bookcase.
- surfing, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Good luck:
http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/resources/img/sections/ ... - pcpimpster, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Maybe they can use these humans to teach their bots to stop ranking spam sites so ***** high.
And i hope some of these people complained about getting a ***** youtube video in virtually every top 10 result...
Which only started to be common... after google bought them.
Who does no evil? - sirloin, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1sure it is.. and whats wrong with takign a blind test and being told yahoo is better but still perfering google?
- sirloin, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1lol
no the point is..it can be better, and if it couldnt we wouldnt have differnt search engines/
and it is very hard to make it better for HUMANS by relying only on the data from teh machines... every once in a while, it may actually pay to have a human look for something and ask "did you find what yoiu wanted int he first page" and then maybe tweak your algorythms if not.
I thank god none of you run google.. or i'd have even greater problems searching out the stuff i want to know. and yeah i can figure out the driving thing, i just thouyght that example was more apt than the movie go..
point is now that google knows i have trouble finding "go" p[erhaps they could use a keyword thing movie:go and filter out all the "go to the moveis" crap i have to wade through to find a review on the movei.
see how that works
genious;. - HonoredMule, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Why does that matter? As long as I have room to drive west without reaching the ocean, I can drive at that speed and be matching pace with the sun. No one ever said anything about doing so indefinitely.
Anyone with the sense to think about time zones would realize it can be done in Canada for at least four hours (that is, if you could actually drive that fast). - frikko, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0I was actually working with this for about 8 months, last year. Its not surprising that Google checks if their algorithm matches the search of a human, or is it?
- twodayslate, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1It would be cheaper just to ask there users.
- frikko, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0By the way, its called The Human Eval Team
- debbit, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0So how does one get this job? lol...no wait...seriously!
- sirloin, on 12/20/2007, -2/+1it is gettign worse althoguh there are ups and downs..
it helps to use firefox with some of the google spam removers.
in blind tests.. they say yahoo is better.. i took blind test and yahoo was better
I stil use google.. i like the clean layout and I'm used to it. - LordSkywalker, on 12/20/2007, -6/+1Review your description. It's incomplete.
