- doiveo, on 10/28/2008, -0/+44Gadgets would be more useful for me in gmail then on iGoogle. Nice move
- afeitarse, on 10/28/2008, -3/+19I don't know. Ever since the crappy iGoogle interface changes that I was forced into a couple of weeks ago ("hey, let's put tabs on the side, using up tons of screen space!"), I've been more wary of Google adding more and more "functionality" to their programs. What happened Google's original idea of a simple, uncluttered interface being the main goal?
- freezerburn666, on 10/28/2008, -0/+11next week, gmail provides free fellatio
- sowlerrmgh, on 10/28/2008, -2/+10can gmail get any better...
- afeitarse, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4Well, it's only for google.com/ig users. Users who use other google sites for other countries (google.ie, google.co.uk, etc.) have not seen this change yet. In fact, I switched to google.co.uk/ig just to avoid the crappy tabs. It does mean that I'm seeing a lot more news articles about Posh Spice and cricket than I'd like, but it's a small price to pay.
- sideburns, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4They go to all the trouble of adding Gmail functionality to the iGoogle page, but then they don't format the HTML leaving me to copy and paste every link? Is this a security/phishing issue? I promise not to click the link that sends my bank account information to Nigeria.
- theOster, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4porn - makes anything better...
- nutmac, on 10/28/2008, -2/+6I think so. Contact feature, for instance, is quite horrible. And there should be an option to automatically archive when a message is labeled. And I don't know why "Invite a friend" is still on the page.
- emorgoch, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3I hear ya there. The tabs on the side didn't bother me so much, but the removal of the "+" button on my RSS feeds did, removing my ability to quickly run through many of the news stuff I read on the front. That pissed me off to no end. And no, the built in summaries that iGoogle provides are insufficient, as they don't have the HTML formatting that RSS text had, nor are they long enough, and up up cutting out halfway through before I know if it's actually worth while to read the article.
- tempusrob, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3IIRC there's a "Labs" feature that puts it above the quoted text. Check it out in your GMail settings.
- hawksfan03, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4Ooops! "Google Calendar" failed to load. Try again
That's the message I get for Calendar and Docs.... will be a nice feature once it gets working though - hiriumi, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4Nice idea and I may use it, but when you put too much stuff together, you sometimes lose the sense of what you intended to do actually. Easily to be distracted.
- pathouston22, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3You are quite correct. Thank you. Learn something new everyday.
Would of been nice of Google to reply to my email though. - santasing, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3Just added google calendar to my inbox view. Neat feature.
- nimawin, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4than
- theOster, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3dugg for the beef with side tabs - i hate those things.
- brickbat, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Yeah, what a massive dick move. They didn't even make it an option. I've been looking for an alternative homepage ever since.
- subliminalurge, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Exactly. In fact, I've stopped using iGoogle and gone back to the bare bones page because too many times I'd go to do a search on something and get sidetracked reading some article I saw mentioned in one of my iGoogle widgets.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Gmail has always been very cool. They didn't try to make it look just like Outlook Express or anything, and there were nice features that actually contributed to writing the message. I enjoy the new features, and especially their jabber server and it's well integration.
- hawksfan03, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2UPDATE: Doesn't seem to work using FF3.1b1 but it works in chrome, IE8 and FF 3.0.3
- pathouston22, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1When responding to an e-mail, gmail puts your automated signature at the VERY bottom of the email, after the included origional e-mail. Thats stupid - and really annoying if you go back and forth several times. It should be after your message and before the replied to email.
I've emailed Google but they ignore me. - freezerburn666, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2which tabs on which side? i don't think i have this..
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Probably a regression... I'd try a nightly but i don't have time. You may wanna file a bug for this.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1bj = beta job?
- matthewf01, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1Was trying to get my "To Do List" gadget from iGoogle loaded into the gmail sidebar (how cool would that be???) but according to a comment on the page for this story, it only supports iFrames gadgets --- so looks like a no-go :-
- elliott9, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I am running FF3.1 B1 and i have no issues with the gmail part. Maybe one of you add-ons broke it.
- verevi, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Dugg for the "invite a friend" point. That is annoying.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Why does the banner for this blog say "Google Operating System"?
- 6minuteabs, on 10/28/2008, -2/+3IBM called. They want their Lotus Notes back.
- notman, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2Agreed... and I was using their clock/calendar, but now they have that gay-ass yellow clock in it's place. I really dislike when drastic GUI updates are forced on the user with no back support.
- blueorder, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Too bad they dont have this for hosted accounts yet.
- Spamkeg, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Its the name of the blog. Pretty useful resource regarding the things that Google puts together that not everyone is immediately aware about.
From the bottom:
Google Operating System Blog is not affiliated with Google™. Some rights reserved. Privacy policy. - SirChasm, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0***** yeah, I hate that. Defeats the purpose of signatures because then you have to add the signature yourself, seeing as how no one is ever going to scroll past their own e-mail message to see if you left a signature after it.
Also, I hate how replying to an e-mail throws you back to the message you were replying to, instead of back to the inbox. If you replied to a message, why would you want to go back to reading it? I e-mailed Google about this, and also got nothing back. - merrifie, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0Please...
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0Totally agree. KISS. Simplicity was what made gmail the ideal of efficiency and speed. It's becoming too much of a juggernaut, a be-all and end-all, like the iGoogle page.
- fixmonster, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0Temp fix until they change all of them:
http://www.google.ie/ig?hl=en - uggidi, on 10/28/2008, -2/+2Good move, but where do I fit in all these gadgets.. my gmail page already feels cluttered and congested. Google should come up with a gadget similar to windows 'desktop clean up wizard' that would remove unused gadgets from my gmail page.
- irha, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0Gmail is already bloated (makes my firefox memory usage jump by about 35mb, right after opening gmail), I wonder how much more footprint these gadgets will add.
- davewells, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0Works on my hosted account... You have to enable Labs features in your domain settings, then you can enable all the goodies in your gMail account.
- Fixthemedia, on 10/28/2008, -2/+1Please add this to android.
- jimgeek, on 10/28/2008, -2/+1Fricken sweet!
- etx313, on 10/28/2008, -8/+2One service closer to WORLD DOMINATION!
- jnuffnuffnomnom, on 10/28/2008, -8/+2use Outlook 2003. Seriously it has all those features and its great.
- sirjimithy, on 10/28/2008, -8/+1Go Go Gadget Spam Filter?
