Talk in grammar he understands: Writely Yes work with your Firefox - dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Calm down. You're using "beta" software. There's no guarantee everythings going to be perfect and everyone be happy. That said, the definitiion of "beta" in google's case should be used loosely.
- kevincw01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20was just about to submit this. change over happened at 9pm tonight. i was saving a document when the whole page refreshed, the url changed and then the document opened in the new format. thanks google.
- dropjaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16http://docs.google.com/?action=all_docs
- groov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The writely design looked a lot better :-(
- Zinite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+202 1/2 hours after this one you assclown.
- jacksim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Sorry, but Safari does not yet support web word-processing." Aaaarghh!
Also, on the "unsupported browser" page:
"We have heard loud and clear that many of you really want it to work, and we have discussed the problems with their development teams."
And:
"If you are working to fix problems with a specific browser and would like to bypass this check, just add &browserok=true to the end of the Google Docs & Spreadsheets url.
Please note that it is a violation of intergalactic law to use this parameter under false pretenses, so don't let us catch you at it.
And, it won't work very well -- really." - solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Google docs will work with Firefox.
- bjtitus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Also just about to submit.
Good stuff. (I actually saw about the announcement on Techmeme, ran over to check it out, and there it was).
Have some screenshots up in case anyone wants to take a look:

At least it detected my firefox popup blocker and opened a new document in the same tab... - Zastrozzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Maybe I'm wrong here, but did they change the original way Writely looked? For some reason I remember Writely looking a lot better than what Google Docs looks like. Am I wrong here?
- kennmartin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This new docs page only shows 'active' by default ... click 'View all' at the upper right to see everything
- SimonDonkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I find it odd how this service is branded as Docs and Spreadsheets. Even in the URL of the blog for this it's d-s. This suggests to me that Google will stop with just 2 programs. I personally would have liked a Powerpoint application from Google where they combine google video, picasa web albums and writely into a full fletched powerpoint app. Possibly with support to download your presentation as a windows (or mac or whatever) executable so you can run it without web access.
- tuxracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Works just fine on Firefox under OSX
- dbtorreliob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't know if they fixed it but the comment i made above about going through your invites to find your old spreadsheets and opening that way did it for me!! Now i can see all my docs and spreadsheets. Way to go me or way to go Google but that mishap didn't last long!!!
- Clevinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They did change the look. Personally, I like it better... then again, I like the Google theme.
- stefeq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7hey macguys you could try downloading the firefox.dmg. Then it's bound to work
- jam705, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i wonder how this will effect microsoft's grip on the business productivity software market. i can't see many companies jumping off the plank of the "USS MS-Office" to save an assload of cash however this looks like a great alternative for the home user. somehow i can see ms tweaking their office document file format so that Google webapps read them as corrupt... but thats just how i think M$ rolls.. well either that or append the Office 2007 EULA to say using Google's services is somehow illegal
- tdaxp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder when this will be integrated into gmail? For instance, if I am emailed an odt OpenDocument Text file, I have to download and upload it, instead of being able to view or edit it right there (as with doc Word files).
- javster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Soon it will be time to pass on the Borg logo used for Microsoft (ala. Slashdot) for Google.
- tygern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That wasn't the problem. There was a bug, but Google fixed it.
- ialan2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6this is a great move by goog.
now its time to develop more apps to take out ms office! - sumguysr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was actualy typing a report for school when the change happened. It was entirely awesome. The changover was completly seamless. One second I was typing in writely and the next second the page reloaded with me typing into google docs, with no loss of data or anything, all that changed was the interface and the url, but it was exactly as I had it.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3unfortunately GIMP is NOT a photoshop replacement. No layer styles, no layer sets, no pantone, no vector masks... and on and on...
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No lag here. That's not the problem from my POV. The new, old uglified look is the bigger issue, IMHO.
- tygern, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mine are there now too. That was quite a scare.
- Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not set in stone... Just yesterday, it was simply Spreadsheets. Today, it is Docs and Spreadsheets. In the future you may get your wish! And don't forget to suggest your idea to google.
- bbene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Export it as a PDF and then print that.
- dbtorreliob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i could send you an invite to one of my spreadsheets, otherwise your up a creek without a paddle!!!!
- blinking8s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no wonder my netvibes widget went to *****...
and the new look...thumbs down - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Oh that's a shame. They made it really ugly. I much preferred the old writely look than this bland google look. Hmm, guess I'll give Zoho a go...
- reynaldo77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It doesn't work well in Safari yet, but it's almost usable. If it tells you your browser isn't supported, just put "?browserok=true" after the root url and it'll let you in anyway to give it a try.
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yet, it's still beta. Gee, what a surprise...
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2now all Google needs is to buy Gliffy.com (www.gliffy.com) so they can compete with visio.
- scuzzphut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(which would really annoy those who go weak thinking of the heresy in sending a richly formatted message)
- scuzzphut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think we can consider Writely as being fully integrated when it is the default text editor in gmail.
- cdharrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It'd be nice if this were better integrated with the Hosted Google Apps... I guess that'll be coming sooner or later...
- kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Microsoft's response:
http://digg.com/software/Microsoft_Responds_to_Google_Docs_Spreadsheets - bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know the so-called "google office suite" doesn't *yet* have all the features of office, but as far as my personal usage goes:
(Gmail) + (Google Calendar) > (Outlook)
(Google Docs and Spreadsheets) > (Excel) + (Word)
(Google acquisition of something like thumbstacks.com?) > (Powerpoint) - aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3nobody understood..
- rathrbfishing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't used Google's spreadsheet very much, but Writely seems to be as lightweight. Is anyone using these programs as a replacement for MS Word or Excel (or Wordperfect)? It doesn't seem like these programs would get the job done. I've just started to play around with OpenOffice 2.0 and it looks like a vastly superior solution for a replacement program (and it's free and open source!).
- fox, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1How do you print a document from within writely without getting the url at the top of the page? And the time in the bottom corner?
- Peterh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My guess is that your browser is putting those there. If you can't turn it off in the browser's settings, you'll probably have to export it, download it, and print it in your office app of choice.
- Matic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope they don't go and change You Tube too. I don't mind them changing writely, makes it fit in nice, however, I would like you tube to stay the same. Not become GoogleTube
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was just Spreadsheets before. Maybe if they add more apps they will change it to Google Office or something.
- glucoseboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2An announcment stating that your spreadsheets will be unavailble for a time would have been nice.
Ahh well, like folks have said earlier, it's beta. - samgab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1have you seen http://www.zoho.com ? They have an online powerpoint equiv, as well as the Word proc and spreadsheet tools. Looks good too.
- helike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The Author Who Could Not Write Fast Enough
A man...several years ago honored me with his literary confidence. He came to me lamenting that he was to such a degree overwhelmed by fullness of ideas that it was impossible for him to put down anything on paper, because he could not write fast enough. He begged me to be so kind as to be his secretary and write at his dictation. I at once smelled a rat and promptly consoled him with the assurance that I could write as fast as a runaway horse, since I wrote only a letter of each word and yet guaranteed that I could read everything I had written. My willingness to be of service knew no bounds. I had a big table brought out, numbered many sheets of paper, in order that I might not even waste time in turning a page, laid out a dozen steel pens with their holders, dipped my pen- and the man began his address as follows: "Well, yes, you see, my dear Sir, what I really wanted to say was...." When he was through with the address I read it aloud to him, and from that time he has never asked me to be his secretary.

My apologies for the length of the entry. It just seemed fitting. -
