- LANjackal, on 05/28/2009, -2/+27"the domestic market is so competitive"
- WHAT? Competitive? When did *that* happen? Truth is that US carriers are slow to adopt Android because it doesn't fit perfectly into their usual walled garden (read: prison) business plan.
"3. The bigger strings option or the no-censorship version: Of the phones coming out this year, 5 to 6 belong to this category, Mr. Rubin said."
- *rolls eyes* here we go again with the same old BS. You'd think the consumer would be able to chose which OS category and model phone he got, but no such luck :(. I wouldn't be surprised if Option 3 is uneconomically priced or bundled with lower ranking hardware to dissuade consumers from selecting it.
As for the smartphone OS list, !!!as far as the US is concerned!!! it's iPhone vs. Blackberry, period, for now. Microsoft have dropped the ball with Windows Mobile, while Blackberry is holding onto its existing install base with an OS that they still haven't optimized for touchscreen interaction. I wouldn't put any money on Palm and Symbian is nonexistent. IMO that leaves Android as the only new innovative cellphone OS out there besides Apple's. Good to see they're making progress. - sneaker98, on 05/28/2009, -1/+17A rectangular screen small enough to fit in your pocket?
How innovative! No one's ever done that before... - ianmacfarlane, on 05/28/2009, -0/+13I've got an HTC Magic and frankly, it's wonderful. Not perfect mind you, but really, really good. Biggest pain so far is that it doesn't support EAP, so can't access one particular Wifi connection. I'm sure support will come though (and it'll probably be delivered over the air, like the 1.5 Cupcake update was).
Can't decide whether I'd rather have a touchscreen keyboard or a slide-out one though. Will be very interested to see what is going to be coming out in the next year.
EDIT: Here's a link to the EAP feature request bug entry, in case anyone else wants to vote for it (click on the star) - http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id= ... - paulsmith288, on 05/28/2009, -1/+10Looking forwards to replacing my iPhone with android. iTunes is such a piece of *****.
Hopefully one will come out that isn't physically horrible. - acknotSW, on 05/28/2009, -0/+9http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=retards&a ...
Here, since I assume you can't for some reason. - sneaker98, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8I'd appreciate it if you'd provide some reasons for your argument.
- digghasnoethics, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8I've gotta say, I spluttered on that one. So the US is supposed to be more cut throat than Japan or Europe? Do you think Mr Rubin gets out much?
As for versions and stuff, why try and play licensing games and tie availability of google apps to signup? Simply break the hardware/software linkage. The manufacturer provides the hardware and the user can implement whatever software they desire. That way there is no comeback to the manufacturer for software items and the user can put the UI that matches their needs - something simple for granny, full hackers smartphone for the techie.
Of course, the service providers lose their death grip on customers that way - becoming data bandwidth suppliers. However that's what they really are and one way or another, that's going to happen anyway. - twon, on 05/28/2009, -0/+6I love my G1. (as a former hacked 1gen iPhone user). My only issue with it is TMobile and being stuck on edge at work
On-screen keyboards are handy and cool, but I could never type as fast as I can on a physical keyboard. Plus the OS itself is great. I have high hopes for Android development. Now just to get on a faster carrier... - smoger, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5it can play Doom. :-)
- jonshipman, on 05/28/2009, -0/+5Look up Samsung i7500
- CircleFusion, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4If every carrier in the US offered an Android phone, which carrier would you choose?
I've been on Verizon for a couple years. I used T-mobile before that. I'm scouting for a new carrier and availability of Android phones will be a deciding factor. - uppedbyhiggins, on 05/28/2009, -2/+6Waiting for the Dragon Ball Z reference...
- fapfaptrain, on 05/28/2009, -0/+4In this Topic: Android 18.
- sproket, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3No profit in that! :)
- deslock, on 05/28/2009, -0/+33G for TMobile is only in major met areas. It has been almost 100% reliable here on Portland OR.
If you don't travel outside met areas and you have 3G tmobile in your city, it's a fine choice.
I disagree with jonshipman above though... 3G is a must. I do lots of browsing on my phone. - jonshipman, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3I'd choose T-Mobile. Cheapest plans and 3G is not a big need of mine - wifi is pretty much everywhere.
- dogslayeggs, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3g1 rooted with cupcake OWNS the iphone hands down. itunes is a joke.
- deslock, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Actually Verizon is just keeping mum until they have one but they apparently have changed their position about Android.
http://phandroid.com/2009/04/27/verizon-android-ph ... - adragontattoo, on 05/28/2009, -1/+3and Verizon will STILL not have one for sale
- sneaker98, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Agreed. That's the one I'm looking to pick up when it comes out.
- vitriolix, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Funny... the next Android phone to come out, the Samsung i7500 AKA Galaxy looks nothing like an iPhone:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/samsung-i7500-o ...
And that OMLED screen is going to smoke pretty much everything out there for color depth, brightness, viewing angle and low power consumption, including the iPhone. - DarkBlueAnt, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2FapFapFap
*Wooo wooo!* - Cepster, on 05/28/2009, -1/+3At least some trolling is funny. You fail on all counts here, dillweed
- Kempachi, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2You win the Otaku Award for the day. I didn't see that one until you pointed it out.
- deslock, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Thank you fanboy for the keen wit. We needed it sorely.
- vitriolix, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/samsung-i7500-o ...
- Jerk, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Get someone other than HTC to make them and they might be decent.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1I was here to make it, but I saw your comment and decided not to...
- Cepster, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1acknotSW...saving the internets from trolls since 2009....excellent work
- deslock, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Yes, it doesn't have built-in support but...
If you are interested you can manually configure the phone to support Enterprise WPA and EAP. I also saw an app that did this for you on the market months ago.
You just need to create/edit the wpa_supplicant.conf (same format as all linux machines). Or download the app and it will do it for you.
The app also allowed you to copy the cert to your SDCard if you have one. - wejmahtin, on 05/28/2009, -1/+1Dug for having the balls to say it knowing that you'd face the onslaught of the google fanbois.
- gazboo, on 05/28/2009, -2/+2Phew.. I thought i was the only one.
- Nephersir7, on 05/28/2009, -2/+1Digg needs a Google section

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:digg ... Returns 1,550,000 results from digg.com for Linux - nepidae, on 05/28/2009, -3/+118, wow that will have more sales than the zune!
- bazemore, on 05/28/2009, -4/+1I am so over Android...I bought an android phone and it is not nearly as good as an iPhone, Win Mobile, or even black berry...why is everyone hoping so hard for it to be the next big thing? I know it's Google, but damn.
- ajsmth, on 05/28/2009, -9/+1But can it play Crysis?
- computershack, on 05/28/2009, -11/+3Hopefully, most of them will stay in the USA where you're used to out of date mobile tech and crappy overpriced connections.
- TheMachine1, on 05/28/2009, -18/+6They mean 18 total phones sold?
- judicar, on 05/28/2009, -24/+3And expect them to all look like iPhones.
- pstroll, on 05/28/2009, -26/+1Android is an outdated piece of *****.
