- Berkana, on 11/28/2007, -1/+71Does it even matter if the competing product also comes from Google?
- Thud, on 11/28/2007, -8/+39"Google has announced two new features for Google Maps that mimic features in Google Earth, begging the question: is Google Earth on borrowed time?"
Sigh....
http://begthequestion.info/ - dn11, on 11/28/2007, -2/+21what a stupid pointless question. Google Earth still has a metric ton of features that Google Maps doesn't have. Is this what goes for hard hitting news on TC these days?
- endus, on 11/28/2007, -2/+19No.
- racketboy, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10You can look at it two ways:
1) It's nice to merge the two into one product as they are similar to start with
2) But one is a web app and the other is a desktop app - wheezy360, on 11/28/2007, -1/+11No, it's not.
Buried. Lame. - dunderballer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7Google maps may catch up to GoogleEarth for consumer use, but I think the software will still be available for some time for business use since it offers so much more adaptability--particularly with the Pro and Enterprise versions.
In fact, the they may want to seperate out B2N and B2C use so they can maximize ad revenue from the advertising function of Google maps (Adworks) and the B2B software upgrade revenue for GoogleEarth. - EvolvedAnt, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8Dude... Google Earth uses over 500 GIGABYTES for the index information alone. The actual raw images use up over 70 TB! Thats 70 TERABYTES.
As much as we would all love to be able to zoom anywhere on the earth with zero download lag by having all the data local, it will not happen anytime soon. Even with 4 Terabyte holographic discs, you'd need about 17.5 discs for the install. - inactive, on 11/28/2007, -2/+9wtf? Don't digg him down, He made a good point!
I know countless people who BTQ Abuse, I can now rub it in their face!
*Feels smart* - rebelwoaclue, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6As a professional land surveyor we use GE all the time. We use it to look at site conditions before making a bid on a proposal. We use it to map out National Geodetic Survey control points using their published latitude and longitude. It can even be useful for seeing ancient property lines or roads that are not immediately evident when you are on the ground. Just because you have a limited use for it does not mean that it has limited uses. Please look outside your own tiny universe before making negative sounding comments.
- troymccluresf, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6Google Maps' terrain feature is supposed to "compete" with Google Earth's 3D, scalable, flyable, layer-able engine? I think not.
- inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5its the google asteroid or the google megavolcano thats going to do it.
- Schneckehaus, on 11/29/2007, -0/+5Begging the question is a logical fallacy, but it is also a statement outside of that realm that has a different meaning.
Been speaking English long? - GeneralFailure0, on 11/28/2007, -0/+5It will be until we as users learn to respect our Google environment.
- goblindegook, on 11/28/2007, -1/+6Also: http://www.qwantz.com/archive/000693.html
- alexguyCA, on 11/28/2007, -2/+7It doesn't "beg the question" it raises the question. See http://www.fallacyfiles.org/begquest.html
- merreborn, on 11/28/2007, -0/+3The new google maps "terrain" feature doesn't hold a candle to google earth.
And there will always be a place for google earth -- GE does a bunch of stuff in 3d that you just can't do in DHTML - Merb, on 11/28/2007, -1/+4who cares? it's not like it'll cease to exist. quite the contrary -- it'll just be more accessible.
buried for being retarded. - wvdavis, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2It means he has a sense of humor.
- EntropyMan, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Notwithstanding EvolvedArt's math, you could put a subset of the whole dataset on a DVD . GE was written to work without a network connection, strictly out of local cache if needed (whatever you look at most recently is cached).
So it's mainly a matter of making that cache live on the DVD in read-only form. It would be slow and limited, but it would work. - tybris, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Errrr... has this guy looked at Switzerland in Google Earth lately? That alone makes it much cooler than maps.
- merreborn, on 11/28/2007, -0/+2Like this?
http://www.isoma.net/games/goggles.html - antdude, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Right here --> .
- user, on 11/29/2007, -2/+3Thank you. Almost didn't want to even look at the comments because I knew there would be know-it-all ***** with nothing at all important to say that would be bitching about "begging the question." This of course begs the question: how many of them have been speaking English longer than 12 years?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiom - teknosaurus, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1No.
- EvolvedAnt, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1Don't forget sky mode that lets you explore space.
- deepdiggdude, on 11/28/2007, -1/+2When will they add a true flight simulator? Or have they?
- nesibus, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1ok first off....the new feature of terrain in google maps is not even a close comparison(yahoo maps has terrain now also, I think they love to release at the same time) to google earths ability to change your point of view, and exaggerate the elevation of the terrain.
Plus having the ability to press the play button and actually travel a drive route at various speeds is a feature maps does not have.
The 3D buildings.....maps is all 2d.
The Space viewer....
There are TONS of other features maps will probably never have.....plus with all the add-ons you can get for google earth.
But the flight simulator in google earth....that right there is better than google maps all together. - EvolvedAnt, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1Actually, you can now enable sky mode, which allows you to explore space, zooming in on what appears to be an empty spot on the sky, only to find hundreds of thousands of galaxys.
- Clp727, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1I prefer the desktop app. Google Earth is too cool!!
- EntropyMan, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1Buried as lame. Submitter should have read the original Techcrunch comments effectively calling the author a clueless tool before reposting this here. We don't need to promote this sort of useless ill-informed speculation.
We might as well speculate that TechCrunch is heading to the dead pool. - bookishboy, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1I don't see Google Earth going away anytime soon, at least unless GoogleMaps becomes offline-enabled
- flipmeat, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1It's more than 70TB - a lot more. But it's not a petabyte - yet.
- SSUK, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1They can keep it alive and call it "Google White Dwarf".
- JackGrinnan, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0Definitely not. Unless they can integrate the flight simulator easter egg into Google Maps...
- TerrorByteX, on 11/28/2007, -2/+2What the hell does that even mean?
- antdude, on 11/28/2007, -2/+2And both requires the Internet.
- boflaade, on 11/29/2007, -1/+0If you have no idea or never used Google Earth, why would you comment? Perhaps using the program and learning how to use it, would prevent you asking about it. ( other then to get more input)
- issachar, on 11/28/2007, -1/+0Hilarious! And T-Rex IS friggin' awesome!
- woj16, on 11/28/2007, -1/+0Awesome!!!!! I just learned about all these fallacies in Philosophy class.
- boflaade, on 11/29/2007, -1/+0So, what's your point?
- gothsquirrel, on 11/28/2007, -3/+2I would pay good money for a version of google earth that would run off of a DVD.
- davepederson, on 11/28/2007, -2/+0The only reason they made Google Earth in the first place is that (in truth) web applications couldn't yet deliver the richness of a rich client. I think they've made it clear that even the Desktop is going the way of the dinosaurs: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-685672714 ...
- woj16, on 11/28/2007, -2/+0That's a shame, I really enjoy Google Earth. I could waste hours on it.
- JamesMorris, on 11/28/2007, -7/+1What do people even use google earth for? To see pictures of their house from the sky?.. Ooh how interesting...
- tonycomputerguy, on 11/28/2007, -9/+2:rollseyes: fukin nerds... This shyt begs the question, "When is the last time you got laid?"
