Neat, but come back to me when it's cross-platform. For now, the standalone app is just fine. - inactive, on 05/29/2008, -3/+17I actually prefer the GE client to a browser - it runs smoother, feels more 'integrated'.
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -2/+11It runs as a plugin, therefore its just the normal native windows or mac code with a plugin interface, much like the way Windows Media player embedded in a page in Internet Explorer doesn't make WMP a web app. Far from "Escaping the client" its just learned a new trick.
I'm surprised a site like O'Reilly can't seem to grasp this but prefers to start hyping it as a real web app. - inactive, on 05/28/2008, -1/+10Well spotted. GE/ maps is one of the most useful real world to web interfaces i can think of.
- gnomex, on 05/29/2008, -3/+11No Mac OS X browser plugin yet :(
- robertmf, on 05/29/2008, -1/+8Actually I'm a bit surprised the linux and mac versions weren't released first; leaving M$ for later.
- alibanana, on 05/29/2008, -0/+6Because Google Earth does a hell of a lot more than Maps does. "Including "Photo-realistic buildings from cities around the world", "Dawn to dusk views with the Sunlight feature", " and "Swoop navigation from outer space to street-level""
- Jordan117, on 05/29/2008, -1/+6If you've got the plugin installed, you need to give Monster Milktruck a whirl. Hurtling down the side of Mount Everest in the world's most awesome dairy delivery van is much cooler than it sounds.

- ElbertF, on 05/29/2008, -2/+6That's what I thought..
.exe? Whut? - robertmf, on 05/29/2008, -1/+5ditto that :-)
- Ademan, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4Too bad google didn't go ahead and standardize a 3d javascript viewport similar to what the javascript canvas is to 2d. There has been talk of a viewport like i'm describing for a *long* time, and google would really be the people to just go ahead and do it, and what's more is, it could alleviate so much of the responsibility from google (let each browser maintain their own 3d viewport, conforming to a certain spec), and really beef up the abilities of web apps.
- 4DFX, on 05/29/2008, -3/+6"...all only on Windows" Google, what the *****?!
- jecruzs, on 05/29/2008, -3/+5What made Google Earth so unappealing was the need to download another client. This is pretty sweet.
Who knows? Maybe Google will even integrate Earth into Maps (or vice versa). - luckyguy2000, on 05/29/2008, -1/+2i like the google earth client better, than the plugin. not anything has to be embedded.
- chadell, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I have done a few google maps mashups and I'm excited about the possibilities with Google Earth API. I'm currently working on http://www.mpelembe.net/google-earth and I'm completely hooked!
- gotigertom, on 05/29/2008, -5/+6Mac penetration is growing...windows is so...abacus like
- jackusage, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1Finally.
- cjacks9, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1Something for my mother and brother, who GE every now and again.
- WomensUnderwear, on 05/29/2008, -1/+2mac user penetration is growing...Jobs is so....god like
- Venky80, on 05/29/2008, -1/+2ya ***** no linux support....surprised?
- brandf, on 05/29/2008, -1/+2What, like VRML?
That was a huge success.... - SimpleAlex, on 12/31/2008, -0/+0Google earth is a really cool tool I find.

http://boyfriendpillow.net/ - aliguana, on 05/29/2008, -1/+1agreed. While this is handy, I can't see me using it over the standalone version. I love the Google Earth client, for all its quirks
- remakeru, on 05/29/2008, -2/+2Microsoft Live Search is plugin based for a while now...
- brandf, on 05/29/2008, -2/+1I just installed this & the 3d live maps for comparison. I have to say that http://map.live.com is way ahead of google. Take 5 minutes and see for yourself.
Google Earth Plugin took way longer to install, required a browser restart, and didn't look/work as well compared to maps.live.com. It's also not integrated in with the 2d maps as nicely.
I know we have a lot of MS haters on digg, but after trying both its hard to deny that MS's maps are better. - brandf, on 05/29/2008, -2/+1If you have the development resources to make a plugin for only 1 platform, which would you pick? Linux?
- WhatALegend, on 05/29/2008, -3/+0Must say seems all a bit pointless.
- WomensUnderwear, on 05/29/2008, -4/+0maybe they thought 95% of the market was a big deal
- emokid2009, on 05/29/2008, -5/+1So, what's the difference between Google Earth and Google Maps now?
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -10/+1What a ***** surprise- something new gets launched and immediately you get idiots complaining that there isn't a version for every single platform.
Should google have waited to release this until the mac and linux versions were ready? No.
