- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26he's on digg.com, I'm sure he has plenty of time.
- Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16it must be a google april fools, just tried browsing directly through google earth without visiting the site on two seperate computers and it appears, the overlay must be getting downloaded automatically by GE.
Looking at the overlay, it has as the image source : http://earth.google.com/images/ufo.png - SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Thus the proof we have all been waiting for. Bill Gates is an alien.
- jool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The image ( http://earth.google.com/images/ufo.png ) is on their servers so I kinda think that google did it themselves.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Exactly. Because it's on Google Earth.
- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's definitely there retard...and I didn't download any file.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11no. open google earth. type in "area 51" then zoom in. it is there, and i didn't download anything from that website.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9aww, they're so cute!
- Dakoman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15doesn't work on mac. April fool's jokes should be cross-compatible.
- AshFire87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12It's from Google...
http://i2.tinypic.com/spjald.jpg - bytebreeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Mac, yes, not there
- porplem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Open Google Earth and go to Area 51. They're there.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's on Google Earth, NOT Google Maps... it's real, you don't have to download anything.. just open Google Earth, goto Area 51 and it's there
- jarnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The KMZ file I had posted just takes you to Area 51. The image is Google's, not mine.
I found out about the joke from the Google Earth Community BBS. See http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/371009/an/0/page/0/gonew/1 - candyungirlish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, this is so bad! I want to see it!
- popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I just logged into my Google Earth and, without any additions to it, was able to find the saucer right away. Dugg.
- nmoline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You have to use Google Earth not Maps! I also did not have to download anything!
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, I think it is from google. Delete the files you downloaded from your "Temporary Places" thingy on the left side, then restart Google Earth. Notice that the overlay is back in your temporary places again! Now search for "Area 51", look slightly to the left of where it drops you, and voila! Also, you can right click on the "friendly visitors" in the temp places, then edit, and notice that the URL is earth.google.com

- Loyaleagle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Very nice...how in the world did they find that joke though...the earth is a big place....
- RapBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's under Temporary Places (close Sightseeing.) That's how he found it.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7They aren't there in the Google Earth for Mac BETA!
- Areku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's in my copy of Google Earth. I just searched for Area 51, did some close-up searching, and there they were.
- jarnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They *do* have a contest that's sort of like Where's Waldo. It's called "Where in the World".
See http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/khGlobe - Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3stil amusing
- Dufresne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dunno...looks pretty realistic to me...I'd watch out for these "visitors" if I were you...
- SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yep, no mac goodness.
- pricecs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Looks like its from Google - Open the Sightseeing - Area 51 placeholder and zoom-in
- ashrric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What do you think the aliens are really barbecuing? Hope it's not long pig!
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Would love to have been given the task this week @ Google to create Google guys BBQ'ing.. Here's a movie of how it looks in the event they take off:
http://flashystudio.com/special/fun/googleFunArea51/ - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Giddy also.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4dang, how do people find stuff like this? do you just brute force it or what?
- speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can someone send me a link to the KMZ file?
EDIT: nevermind, I found it! just scroll down in your "My Places" list and double click on "Friendly Visitors"
It is from google, because the image is located on google servers. m. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"How's that Safari working out for you then? Mmmkay."
Google EARTH, that has nothing to do with Safari (which is a kickin' browser, by the way). - sabbac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude, fix your computer.
- kwazyJAS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It reminds me of Wheres Waldo. It would be great is someone made a Wheres Waldo game with google maps.
- rebusrms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2funny as hell
I love it - scotty1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It smokes Firefox too, not just Safari.
- razmech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's there, I didn't download anything
- veruus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crashes my browser. :(
Firefox on Ubuntu 5.10. - jcook793, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The link crashed my Safari twice... sad Mac.
- darkvad0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And they have also this new cool energy/smart drink: google.com/googlegulp/
You gotta love the last question on the FAQ :
11. When will you take Google Gulp out of beta?
Man, if you pressure us, you just drive us away. We'll commit when we're ready, okay? Besides, what's so great about taking things out of beta? It ruins all the romance, the challenge, the possibilities, the right to explore. Carpe diem, ya know? Maybe we're jaded, but we've seen all these other companies leap headlong into 1.0, thinking their product is exactly what they've been dreaming of all their lives, that everything is perfect and hunky-dory %u2013 and the next thing you know some vanilla copycat release from Redmond is kicking their butt, the Board is holding emergency meetings and the CEO is on CNBC blathering sweatily about "a new direction" and "getting back to basics." No thanks, man. We like our freedom. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11984 was fiction...or did you not realize that?
Gotta love it when people with the tin foil hats always bring up 1984, like it is some sort of prediction documentary. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, that's great.
- NERV84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hahhaaaa thats awesome
- nthitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was the joke from last year!
- zsf555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, the guys down at Google have nice humor.. Remember if you zoom in on the moon, you see cheese. Nice.
- junkyinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its obviously a joke, like aliens would really be barbecuing...
- settsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Floating/Flying cars... UFOs...
You people need to check out this hot new Actual Earth 1.0™!
I've found Walking People, Floating Bugs, Flying Birds, and more!
It's certainly not without it's risks (crashes, viruses, and what not), but boy is it realistic!
Look for my review, posting soon on Digg... -
