- PotVsKtl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16That's a fairly ridiculous statement.
- diggalf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Has it been more than a month since you last edited your documents?
Try checking All documents to see older documents or others that might have been shared with you." - webtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6try to refresh, it works just fine to me!
- illegalchuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, it is back up now.
- Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I haven't had any problems. It also imported my Writely documents.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wonder...maybe relying on third parties to save your data (or to provide software that they can take down or change with impunity) is stupid. Yes, yes it is.
- barwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Has anyone lost all their old spreadsheets? I had about 8 or 9 spreadsheets in Google's spreadsheet system before the update, and I can't access them anymore. I'm hoping this is just a temporary problem while they roll out all the updates ... but if I end up losing all my data, I don't think I will trust them with future docs...
Anyone else experiencing this?
This is one of the big drawbacks of these web-based services. I was so stoked when they first launched this feature. But not having your data at your fingertips on your local machine puts a lot of trust in the provider. Of course, Google's more reliable than a single desktop hard drive, but you get my point.
Looks like it's time to start keeping local copies of all my google documents .. probably a good idea anyway ;) - Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What shot across the bow?
I tried to use google spreadsheet to make my dinner menu for the week. It was horrible getting the data in, formatting, and printing. I gave up and put it in excel.
Let me reiterate: Just because it is online, uses AJAX, is "web 2.0", and made by google does NOT mean it is good, useful, or needed. - scarabic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess somebody must have already trademarked the name "Google Office."
- frofro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Sorry, but Safari does not yet support web word-processing."
- dako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree, I think I liked better the Writely old olive green and yellow-ish colors and how the buttons and options were setup. Don't get me wrong, I like my white/blue Gmail interface, but this was somewhat sudden, and the Writely interface was actually nice. I really hope someone makes a Greasemonkey/Stylish script to change back to the old interface =/.
Other than that, I still love the idea of being able to work on my documents online and be able to share them and collaborate with other people, so integrating Writely with Spreadsheets is something I actually like. - barwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're back! I checked this morning and all my documents are back. Needless to say, I'm making backups of them now ;)
I guess it was just a glitch while they were rolling out the changes. Phew. - def1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"only people with an internet connection can use"...and Excel can only be used at the computer is was saved on. That's the point. a lot of people usually have a connection and don't want to be emailing, uploading or thumb-driving spreadsheets all over the place. I love it.
- betobeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dunno. You could hear MS's army of lawyers charging from the distance if that ever were to happen.
- insomniak29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who always wins at Monopoly? The annoying guy that buys every freakin' property he lands on. Oh sure, you got Boardwalk and Park Place, but the buy with a foothold in every other corner of the map is the one who wins.
Google may not have any hotels built just yet (except for Search) but they will eventually. - pbinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had this problem too; but it should work now. Since the page was activated right when the new interface went live, it took a couple minutes for my speradhseets to migrate over.
- shaolinpunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i miss the writley interface
:( - mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now they need to buy the & add dabbledb folks for a free, approachable database app. Word & Excel docs are easy - databases are another story.
- thiskid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My one spreadsheet is still there. That's a shame that they lost yours.
- baustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's quite possible that you may need to check you "inactive" documents. If you haven't accessed a document for more than 30 days, then it is marked as inactive--or at least this is the case with word documents. I'm assuming this feature was ported into this suite, because it was not a feature of Google Spreadsheets prior to now.
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is nice, but I was unable to use the post to blog feature. Anyone else having trouble with this feature?
- kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft's response:
http://digg.com/software/Microsoft_Responds_to_Google_Docs_Spreadsheets - simd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is amazing for collaborative working - I use it all the time. Sure it lack some features, but it's nice to have emphasis on content rather than style.
I use Open Office too - can't say I like it though. - simd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But you're able to work on a document, in real time, with others using virtually any Internet connected computer. Soon (I would hazard a guess) you won't need to cart your laptop around with you.... just flip open your PDA / Mobile Phone and see the latest changes to the document / spreadsheet / presentation / database.
With ubiquitous connectivity it'll be a great way to work. And let's face it, Google probably back up their data more often than I do :) - lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they were just going for a short URL or something personally. I imagine if I had worked for google and worked on this project I would have made the url small like that too. Big url's are the suck.
- NoSuchAgency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Google has the worst case of ADD I have ever seen."
It's more likely that they want all your base to belong to Google. At the rate they're going, they'll be competing in just about every "common" niche of computing and internet usage in a few years. E-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, video and image hosting, they are fixing to become something similar to the new Microsoft. Since they are doing a lot of it for free, however, I am unclear on their business model. I know they sell advertising and hardware search applicances, but how else do they intend to make money off of free services? - jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm. I keep on getting 502 errors when I try to create a new spreadsheet or upload files.
- jabo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0not to be too nerdy or anything but i registered docsandspreadsheets.com because no one else had. should i give it to google? ill sell it cheap if anyone else wants it
- betobeto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Google = Big Brother 2.0
(getting there) - Mystic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i agree with Brickbat OO is the real threat to Office but any free tool like this puts MS under pressior
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Worst name ever.
- illegalchuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3huh. that's really weird.
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1...ft
- lgringo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Why couldn't it be: office.google.com ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0This was already Dugg below and also has a review of the site.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_Launches_Google_Docs_and_Spreadsheets - barnis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5i don't think that's rediculous at all
- jphillips59, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1useless crap that only people with an internet connection can use...whoppie. I don't know about you, but i kinda like have stuff installed on my computer knowing that even when i am traveling or just want to walk around with my notebook i can work. These are just stupid and server a ever shrinking population.
Maybe it just me, but i don't get it. Are you trying to offer this to 3rd world countries that can't afford office? Is so they probably don't have the bandwidth to even use it. If i was a person in that situation i would use open office, not this dribble.
Google has the worst case of ADD I have ever seen.

http://windowsconnected.com - halvertos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1hm something else i probably won't ever use
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2This is not a threat to MS. OO is THE threat.
- Wibree, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Its mirrored @ http://dreamchaser.go4i.net/technology/techcrunch-google-docs-spreadsheets-launches.html !
Great Update!! - dexta, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Looks like techcruch took the article down.
Im not sure if i like the new writley interface, no easy access to font and font size. - glafira, on 10/12/2007, -21/+5I love this its the begining of the end of MS Office.
