- Junkey, on 10/12/2007, -13/+138It is still beta so its all cool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+107You get what you pay for.
- AgentEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+80As long as the User Agreement is worded properly, Google is not liable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+56As long as it is a free service, Google is not liable.
- lustre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Unless you are one of the hapless 60...
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42Well, under Hotmail, their were valid emails that I never got! I'll never go back to Hotmail.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Ask for your money back. :)
- smspence, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Randomguysteve: That is one of the most incoherent comments I have ever read on digg. Congratulations, you're an idiot.
- infowar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26At least they are admitting there mistakes, doesn't show too much arrogance. But I still don't trust them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Google is not liable until there is an exchange of consideration in agreement for something, e.g. I give them $10/month and they give me an email service. (Even then, they can escape liability.)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16well duh, his account got deleted.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23A technical error is expected at sometime...at least google was able to keep the deleted accounts to a minimum and took care of the problem.
60 people it not many at all, when you compare it against how many users there are. - lustre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Concorde only screwed up one flight.
- Knoton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Jake 8689
exactly his point, you shouldn't expect perfection from a free service - ferreth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1860 users accounts lost all or some of their email? A very minor glitch I'd say.
- lustre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You seem to have a highly exaggerated sensitivity to marketing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10How is the title misleading? There was a glitch in Gmail, right (no matter how small you think it is - it's still a glitch)? And Google did confirm it, right?
So how is "Google Confirms Gmail Glitch" misleading? - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Erg... Maybe a backup option would be nice -- just to be able to download a .tgz of all my crap.
I realize this can be done with POP, but it's not quite good enough if all your mail gets deleted... - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Because .7z is only readable by one program which doesn't seem to be available for mac, and the compression ratio is only minimally better anyway?
- toomuchpete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All interesting points, but if we're talking about liability...
Google isn't liable until a court says so.
(And anicejew is correct insofar as consideration is concerned, but there are a lot of kinds of consideration that are not monetary) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Direct quote from article - "with messages and contact information being permanently deleted".
So what makes you think that they're going to get their messages back? Is it that you didn't read the article? - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Knoton: Or any systems.
- hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow. Never before have I seen a single of anicejew's comments in positive diggs.
Congratulations. - Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@msmspence:
maybe i've spend to much time with modal* people, but i'm able to follow his story.
He beleived that in IE6 the delete button didn't work.
He therefore removed IE6 and installed IE7.
He now has a HD error, ...and he does not get how this can be: he removed the 'faulty' IE6!
His mother likes IE6 more than IE7.
modal* = digifobiacs, also known as not nerds. - kalmi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They have all your mails on three different server.
"Google has built their own distributed, fault-tolerant, petabyte filesystem, the Google Filesystem. This is ideal for the job. Say GFS replicates user email in three places; if a disk or a server dies, GFS can automatically make a new copy from one of the remaining two. Compress the email for a 3:1 storage win, then store user's email in three locations, and their raw storage need is approximately equivalent to the user's mail size." - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I never did get my data restored
- kalmi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought they stored everything permanently... :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damn. Anicejew not dugg down for once. Has digg gone ***** crazy?
- dsendecki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're kidding right? You know they have thousands of racks of redundant hard drives right?
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11My friends account was deleted. He didn't just loose his gmail, he lost every single google account, spreadsheets, calendar, etc.
- Whoblah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@nmeadata
Because the people that work for Google may actually give a ***** about the people using that free service? - sfslim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Er.... "Oops?"
In case you're worried, here's a tip on backing up your gmail accounts to a POP account: http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:1lBI-Q0tv9QJ:blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2006/08/19/how_to_backup_gmail/+backup+gmail&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=3&client=firefox-a
(Original link below seems to be 404, which is why I posted the Google cache link)
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2006/08/19/how_to_backup_gmail/ - Khaosx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow! And here I thought there was no way to get rid of your old messages on GMail.
- pvdnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some of you people need to learn the difference between the word "their" and the word "there." Sorry to be such a dick, but come on.
- r121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because standards==good.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Knoton: But we have come to and I think Google wants us to expect their systems to be perfect. Google's unstated goal seems to be thriving for perfection or the closest approximation of perfection. I think that's actually a very good thing because they really do aim very very high. This latest glitch is extraordinary for Google and only seems minor when compared to other companies. It's like Lance Armstrong losing a 10 km dash. It can happen but it doesn't mean he's not among the best cyclists in the world. Nonetheless I think it would be a shock to him. But I think the really important thing here is for Google to learn from their mistake and make sure it doesn't happen again, which I expect them to. It's this latter aspect that earns my trust in them. They and a few companies I truly respect don't simply go "Oh well, ***** happens", be complacent, and then tell you to just take it as it is. It's just not a very nerdy thing to do :-) Nerds are perfectionists.
- r121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Careful, Google might "lose" that cache as well ;-)
- WallnutBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lmao.. Wow you musta been one of the lucky ones then??
Uh.. I mean.. Oh God are you okay?! I can't believe you lost all of those viagra emails.. just like that! And you're still alive today?
You got balls.
I'd never be able to go through losing those spam emails in my lifetime... - oobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i tried the backup via POP, and it took most of a day to do. :( soooooo slow
- aaronhall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't realize Digg pulled in so many lawyers
- sixty6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even so, people with the amount of credibility Google has should be more careful..
"The incident is noteworthy whether it is a malicious hacker attack or a simple accident because Google is frequently celebrated for the security and reliability of its technology"
They're not being celebrated now... - konspence, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think Google should have had backups in this case.
- dgp1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@minigamer:
Get off dialup.
There, fixed your problem.
No seriously. MOVE if necessary. If you're a geek, you can afford to live in the 99% of the POPULATED parts of the civilized world where they have at least some modest DSL. Come on. - Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Burke: 7zip IS available for the mac, you've got a freaking unix underpinning to compile source with. Sure it might not be a fancy GUI, but the cli works fine.
http://homepage.mac.com/krmathis/ or you could just compile the source. - 511pf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can bet that if the government wanted those e-mails recovered they would find a way. So why can't they do it for a tiny number of users?
- motters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an avid Gmail user this is quite worrying
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LOL Games on linux
- nmeadata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with you on that, It is what I would prefer for a resolution, I hope it happens.
- HenryChen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because it's free does not mean it should be crap. Losing email is the worst kind of error that can happen. It calls in question Google operational procedures. The fact that it is beta for 2 years now does not matter. If it would everyone would just stick a beta label on their product to avoid scrutiny.
- nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I just think it was an accident. If it was the work of hackers then a lot more emails would be deleted.
