- GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google bought a piece of a company, not the other way around. AOL has no say in what goes on at Google.
- avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remember that this gives Google access to something extremely important: AOL Instant Messager's user base. Google has successfully created it's own IM client, but the best IM client in the world would fail miserabely if it didn't have a large user base. In order to GET users Google has to convince Joe Blow to download and use their client, but no one will want to use it if they cannot talk to their friends.
Google obviously can't merge with MSN (being Microsoft made) and Yahoo just made a deal with MSD to merge networks, so those are off limits for now. All in all, considering the perceived increase in importance in instant messeging technology over the years to come, Google made this move in part to successfully tap into this particular realm of the Internet. Besides, it'll be interesting to see the technological implementation used to connect the Jabber and AIM networks (will the codebase of AIM be changed to comply with Jabber technology?), and I think this was a very wise move on Google's part, one that will make Steve Ballmer have even more hissy fits than usual. - mousky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"What exactly does spending a billion dollars on garbage get you?" - About $500 million in annual revenue.
"Reality is they just bought aol." - They bought around 5% of AOL.
"How do you give away advertising and then say that there is no preferential treatment?" It's a credit. If AOL wants its ads to appear more often, it will have to pay a higher price, which means less ads with the credit. - aaronwall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they didn't set anything straight...that was nothing but PR spin.
"AOL will receive a credit towards advertising purchased through Google's ad program. You might wonder if this will affect the ad auction. It won't. We don't offer preferential treatment on advertising (in either the auction or the display) to any of our partners."
How do you give away advertising and then say that there is no preferential treatment?
You could go through point by point and see that alnost all of them are garbage. Like AOL being in the Onebox area...I don't recall ever seeing AOL specific content there. - chkMINUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I second that avonej. If google talk users will be able to communicate with aim users it will make many of their products that much better, some even now usable. No one has used google talk because of lack of adoption. Well that, hopefully, will be changed with the connecting of the two networks. Then connect it with jabber and gtalk now talks with gtalk/aim/jabber servers. Maybe yahoo would come around and every im user would be in heaven. Now beyond gtalk I will start using google desktop with gtalk with in. Have the power of google desktop + IM in that one window and now im in heaven. Not to mention the amount of contacts that will be automatically stored in your gmail for easy access. The easy abiltily to email an IM contact etc... The one thing I pray they do not do is make gTalk just a multi network client like gaim, trillian. I need to be able to talk to aim accounts on my google account without creating an aim.

- There will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages. There will not be crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site. Ever.
god i hope so, because if they do alow for this, then they will have stooped down to the "others" they have become as bad as yahoo, and msn.
google is the best for searching, and i use it for that. but the simplicity of there homepage is the biggest reason i use it. so if anybody that wors at google reads this. please. keep the home page the way it is. please. - hayseed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but when will i get my free google cd in the mail?
- avonej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The one thing I pray they do not do is make gTalk just a multi network client like gaim, trillian. I need to be able to talk to aim accounts on my google account without creating an aim."
I agree, and hope this would not be the case as well, but I don't think you need to worry. Trillian, Gaim, and all the other multitudes of clients that tap into the AIM network all have no compatability issues now (hah anyone remember the AOL-Trillian wars when Trillian users would constantly get booted?), and THEY didn't buy 5% of AOL.
No, I think that for the amount Google paid to get this deal through, adding an alternative connect option in the Google Talk client is not what they have in mind. HOPEFULLY the networks will be merged completely, and I think this is what Google had in mind when they bought such a large amount of such a gigantic corporation. - RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares??? When (if) G fails, something better will take its place....
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice, ++digg
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah music the the ears....giving advertising away was part of a deal with aol to get to index their info. they brokered a deal with them. Is it preferential?...there will be no flashy aol ads etc....however there will be alot more aol ads so yes it is preferential.
- CerebralVisions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damage control it looks like. Reality is they just bought aol. And aol is, as of right now, a major player. They have the "eye balls". no picture ads on google please
- Flyngwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Nice" was exactly the word I was gonna use.
- nevries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google talks the talk, but they stopped walking the walk :-(
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea.... Im a huge google fanboy but ...... the whole one box thing is pretty fishy.....
- Machine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It prevented Microsoft from spending a billion dollars on AOL...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good, they should explain, hehe.
- wyrder42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok. *shrug* So what?
No banner ads. Well, I didn't think there were gonna be. But, no matter how you slice up the fish, the fact remains Google bought 5% of a company that has a really, really incredibly bad reputation in certain circles. No, this doesn't lead to banner ads on Google. But this does mean that Google is growing up and getting bigger and more mainstream. As this process continues, the odds are high that it will lose some of the geek-mystique that got it where it is in the first place. It's part of the natural cycle of popularity.
There'll likely come a time when Google is "evil". I don't think it's happened yet, but I do think this is one step in that inevitable direction. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ban kool aid guy before he gets to this one
' - grogan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All obvious.

ITS AOL DUMBASS!!!!...
AOL IS BAD and soon will be googles stock for this dumbass move! - lbtori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google wants to make money. if buying AOL affects their search results or the simplicity of their site and all their products people wont like it and they wont use it.
- Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe "crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site" i just think its funny they used the word doodads
- TiEsQue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a very convincing statement. Since Google is public now, I guess we'll just have to wait to read their financial statments for more details on their contract with AOL.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0peotic
- lerch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read. I'm glad Google set things strait.
My favorite line :P
"- There will be no banner ads on the Google homepage or web search results pages. There will not be crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site. Ever." - RobbieCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Additionally most of you misunderstand what they mean by preferential treatment.
No preferential treatment means that the AOL pages they index will not be placed earlier in search results if they don't merit it. They'll be ranked the same way as all the other pages, Microsoft included. - Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*beathes a sigh of relief*
- GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Doesn't change a thing.
AOL is AOL.
What exactly does spending a billion dollars on garbage get you? - RobbieCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course there's going to be more AOL ads now, there were none before this, if AOL only gets one million ads out of this deal that's still a million more than there were before. If you think that the fact that Google now has a 5% stake in AOL is going to make Google.com look like AOL.com you're mental.
I didn't see any of you people complaining when Google bought Picasa or whatever the company was called before it turned into Google Earth. Now they advertise those products... Same thing as with AOL.
Google is a corporation that is focused on making money, of course this acquisition is about expanding and making more money. As soon as Google stops making money it will stop existing. If it stops expanding it will lose market share, and soon start to lose money. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that preferred advertising thing that says they give no preference is a blatant lie. I have done tests on their advertising options and with one website I helped run for over 2 years we received not only better customer service but better advertising too. Since they knew that we would be on for the long haul they not only gave us better placement, but we got it at a cheaper price two. We ran 2 identical websites (content and stock wise, we sold software) under two domains. The first domain which we advertised for the 2+ years got better placement for cheaper (sometimes more than 25 to 45% cheaper) than the first which was only advertised for less than 6 months. Same marketing stratagies, but we payed more on the 2nd and were placed lower than our first and did not receive the special customer service. Take anything google says with a grain of salt. While i still respect them, they do sketchy stuff.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0proof is in the pudding.
- apache2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They do what they have to do, you guys need to stop throwing these conclusions out there, I'm _sure_ google knows what they are doing ;)
- ompalaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg. Google is still the best. :D
