- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29looking forward to this,im sick of paypal and their scamming ways.someone buys something from me with a stolen credit card, paypal locks MY account and not the scammers,i lose a grand and a half and a laptop
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Agreed. Paypal loves to lock accounts, and freeze your money. And then they want you to send 50+ different forms of ID, invoice of items your selling, tracking numbers for the last 40 transactions from the last 4 months, etc. Then maybe they'll decide to unfreeze your account with $10,000 in there. I love the locked accounts because someone sending you money for a $5 item may be "fraudelent" so they lock your account full of all your eBay money. I hate Paypal, because they are not regulated like a bank, and they do whatever. If you can't get your account unlocked with your money, they'll just hold onto it for 6-9 months, collect interest, and MAYBE give it back. And yes, I have had my Paypal account broken into, credit cards used, and they say it was my fault! I have been waiting for an alternative to Paypal. Yuck!
- leanweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8point is, google checkout will create competition to paypal and chances are, both will end up better services in the long run.
certainly paypal will no longer be able to get away with some of what they do. - andron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8And don't forget that Paypal is insecure.
From Netcraft: http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2006/06/16/paypal_security_flaw_allows_identity_theft.html
Appears they don't even bother to check there code for XSS exploits, apparently they seem to think there is no problem with allowing users to inject code into their pages. I would NOT expect this kind of sloppy coding from someone who handles financial transactions.
Personally I will now never use Paypal because I actually value the safety of my financial data. If they make newbie errors in site coding how are we meant o trust any other part of their system is safe?
Good Luck to Google. I've only ever heard bad things about PayPal, nice to see a new player in the market. Hasn't Google diversified quite a lot, remember the days when it was just a search engine?
Now they seem to be spreading into all corners of the web. Google could well become the next computing superpower. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you mentioned ebay...
this doesnt apear to be (and the article states that it isnt) a way to pay for person-to-person transactions (meaning no ebay/Auctioning payments)
its meant for companies with 'Checkout' systems. E-commerce sites where you add stuff to your cart, or you are selling a service or other product. Meant to replace paypal where people can opt to pay with it, instead of credit cards when they 'Checkout' - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4article is about google checkout, not complain about paypal (which we all know it sucks)
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://paypalsucks.com - this site has been around; very interesting stuff on there. They list alternatives to Paypal and other stuff relating to paypal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I saw "paypal" in caption it just infuriated me and I ranted. I just hope it will evolve to compete on all levels with Paypal. Because like leanweb mentioned essentially is that the best scenario for a consumer is when companies compete for your business.
- Wyattx17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This looks mighty Interesting as I can't wait to see the rates at which they take out per transaction vs Paypal.
- jks52086, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is checkout.google.com redirecting you all to your Google account page?
- jonathanex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah yes, the normal ZDNet "close to launching story". Which means it'll be up in... ooh, around 12 hours?
Could be interesting. - p2pintel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GBuyBeta.com is not Google-owned, Google Inc. did not put up that page and dns to that site is not served by Google.

If i were you, i'd double check the information above to determine if that google-certified, Which I believe isn't.
;) - georgemarine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well Gbuy was their code name, that's what i had read sometime backup and yes they are a paypal killer
http://techie-buzz.com/google-news/gbuy-paypal-killer-on-the-way.html - adame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't spell Gaoogilpe without API.
- kenok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup... i hope so too.
- Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what the support will be for carts like osCommerce, or CREloaded. I use them and really don't want to use paypal. hopefully they will create a good API.
- R0BBiE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is it going to be released on the 28th of june?
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1according to Forbes it is
http://www.forbes.com/markets/equities/2006/06/09/google-0609markets09.html - gcube9x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This will add another branch of searches to Google Trends...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quoting Alex...
"The proof is in the pudding, and I gotta get in that pudding"
I'm going to wait and see what it's like compared to paypal - deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gbuy is a short and simple name to been able to remember. It would have been a much better name than checkout.google.com. I would have like gbuy.com much better - less keystrokes. Yes, I'm that lazy.
But none-the-less, I hope they give PayPal a good run for their money. Since PayPal really sucks and charges an arm and a leg in fees.
Google Checkout come on down. - harsoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure Google Checkout will dominate the online payment world as more and more merchants are accepting Google Checkout.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gbuybeta.com is not real, see p2pintel's post below. Do not follow katoved's link. It's not google owned.
- slowdive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sell a lot of merchandise through various band sites on the internet.. and using Paypal initially was fine. Now that things have picked up significantly and I've used Paypal for several years.. I've run into all kinds of problems with them, not to mention hating their interface and their support (among the worst). They also charge up the whazoo. I'm part of the crowd who thinks just about every product Google has introduced does whatever it does 100 times better than others. They just "get it". So I have high hopes for GBuy/Google Checkout. I really hope their rates are at least a little less than Paypal.. b/c I know every other element will be superior.. you can bet on that.
Ideally GBuy/Google Checkout will allow people to purchase from Paypal accounts. That's pretty critical actually. - bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want trends.google.com to get informed earlier about things like this ;)
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I hope GoogleCheckout is truly international, PayPal is USA-only.
- stratmancj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this article was posted 2 days ago (June 16) so i guess it wasn't that close to launching
- gaznet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys, i have just attempted to sign up...
Just to let you know it's only avalible to the US.. oh well i can wait for UK..
this is the seller signup page... https://checkout.google.com/sell/signup?entryPage=ac¤tPage=ac&lastPage=ac&agent=Merchant& - jetter99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone use SWREG (www.swreg.org)? I see they just released new pricing and have a lot of options. Just curious on anyone’s experience.
Thanks,
Scott - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0preach brother
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0paypal really sucks, hopefully google can replace it
- checkout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and here is a blog about this checkout
http://gcheckout.blogspot.com - checkout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0see a post by paypal employee about google checkout , he has removed his post now ;)
http://gcheckout.blogspot.com/2006/07/google-checkout-vs-paypal.html - Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Only those who have never been Google clients(adwords/adsense) think this is going to be great... Ignorance is bliss.
- katoved, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Google has a page up for the GBuy product. It is http://www.GBuyBeta.com Check it out.
- lollip0p, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I've never had my Paypal locked before... I thought in order to use credit card via PP you will need to have it verified with the code on your bank statement. How can those who steal cc use them if they cannot verify the funds? I really prefer echeck despite the 4-7 business days transactions.
I'm really looking forward to Gbuy! I hope google will release an auction site too muwahah ebay is too profit-oriented! XD - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Another Google BETA project... no digg.
- paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I agree, people are ignorant and think that google is the savior of the internet. They are very inexperienced with this sort of business model, and time will tell how well they can handle it. I've done thousands of transactions with paypal, but then again I use fraud prevention techniques and watch my @## and have had no issues at all with them.
Just because you are ignorant about fraud on the internet doesn't mean it's paypals fault you got scammed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5PayPal freezes accounts because they're constantly fighting one of the most difficult fraud problems inherent to the internet: how do you know who someone is when all you have is an email address? A scammer with a stolen credit card can easily send money to another account that they control, withdraw the money, thus leaving PayPal on the hook for the stolen funds since they are the merchant of record.
The fraud detection problem is this: Either you have too many false negatives, and criminals make off with your and your customers' money and you get bankrupt, or you have too many false positives, and you catch some innocent customers, who get mad at you. Erroring too much on either side is fatal, and PayPal does a hell of a better job at it than Google does with their fraud problem.
Considering how well Google is doing at managing their skyrocketing AdSense clickfraud rates, how good to you think Google is going to be at fighting fraud once they launch a "PayPal killer?"
More details on why this "PayPal sucks, Google will save us" FUD is stupid: http://xpaypal.blogspot.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5You mean like how Google will cancel your adsense account if one of your competitors clicks on your ads a few dozen times in an attempt to ***** you?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1which idiots dugg me down
