- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45I'd leave PayPal in a heartbeat.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21So.. basically... ebay? ;)
- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17If eBay hadn't already bought PayPal, you might have an idea there.
(On preview: What Lava said.) - haooken, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22People seriously need to stop using the phrase "____ Killer" You have no idea how farking stupid that is. Seriously, people. don't be retarded.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16this would be great when integrated with Google Base... a Craigslist you can actually buy from!
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19So is micrsoft going to buy paypal now.
- pigphucker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Digg needs some way to delete things like this. They also need a "cancel" button in addition to the "click to edit" button as the counter is counting down a post. And a "submit now" button without a countdown.
Oh yeah, does anyone know of a fix for the default comment display setting? Even though I chose "sort by date (show all)" in my profile, every story I view reverts to "sort by date (-4 diggs or higher)" - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"x: y killer?" = frontpage
- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I thought this was Google Purchases? I was approved for beta, I tried to sign up and no go - emails to google went unanswered.... Google Purchases was to link with gbase and allow you to sell through gbase, an ebay like system (Buy it now only, but thats the best way to go anyway) best part is UNLIMITED listings for NO COST - You only pay when an item sells - That system alone will kill ebay.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I think it will be a shopping cart system to help websites accept payment for their items online. The money site owners make will be deposited into a holding account at Google — just like AdSense works.
Isn't this starting to sound a lot like PayPal? "
well the speculation was made by the writer, without much evidence, so obviously to the writer, it seems like paypal (cause they just made up a speculation that made it seem like paypal!) - dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5it is mostly about rates and ebay intergration, if they charge lesser fees then paypal, and can work on ebay, they will be set.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why does everything hjave to be a "killer"? Since when can markets sustain only one option? Google is NOT expecting to drive PayPal into bankruptcy anymore than they expect to be brought down to bankrupcty by any new internet ad company. They simply want to grab a share of profits too. The notion that Google will autoamtically grab a huge market share is just ridiculous. You guy have to realize that outside of your bubble, the rest of the world does not cream in their jeans over everything Google. In fact, a LOT of people do not trust them at all. But most simply don't think about them at all. To many people. Google is absolutely nothing but search. Most people do not have, nor want, Gmail. Most peopel use YouTube and not Google Video. And most people think that Google Maps/EArth is cute, but not a big deal.
- pigphucker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6paypal sucks. someone else needs to start a service that actually works well and isn't so fraud ridden. It might as well be google.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6All that's remaining is for Google to release a virtual reality chamber for the home and it's game over.
- Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Would be even better if it works with osCommerce.
- jonathanex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't that normally mean the product is going to fail and no-one will remember it? How many people remember iRiver's "PSP Killer", or the latest "iPod Killer"?
On the story though, I'm interested to see Google's take on payment services. With at ZDNet blog's track record, this will probably happen soon. - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I don't know about you but here in the States, you are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around."
Ah, but Microsoft invented a new take on this one - innocent until proven guilty (tick, done that), but then they got to pretend that they were innocent all along, so they could just skip the whole sentence-serving/making-good/repenting part. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Google anything kills anything that google made it to kill.
'cept google talk. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7i praise everthing google and hope they take over the world! down with the money hog paypal
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PayPal is the PayPal killer. This is just icing on the cake.
- azermuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's called PROFIT. Don't worry it's not a bad word.
- thenikola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The fact remains that ebay wont be integrating Google's payment system into ebay so paypal isn't going anywhere, they might lose a little of their independant payments but thats nothing compared to the ebay transactions.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Right...like Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, MySpace, Frienster....the list of businesses Google has killed goes on and on...
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Because people are not stupid.
MS is a convicted monopolist and Google is not. In fact Google has been working to tear down monolopies by way of competetion. If this story was about MS, it would have been how MS has come up with a new payment system which you can only access with a Passport account or using some trusted computing crap which they built into Vista.
MS's recent introduction of a new image format (proprietery, BTW) and their Urgue music service are examples of that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3while there is little doubt in my mind that google is working on some sort of payment system, using domains registered by google is little cause for speculation. google pretty much owns google*.com and why wouldn't they?
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ebay isn't owned by Yahoo. They're just in a "partnership". Meanwhile rumor is Microsoft and Ebay are in talks of merging.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3every time i look at digg it's always google killer, myspace killer, paypal killer, originality killer, decent headline killer...
there's plenty other words that not only work in the same context, but they're better. like competitor, alternative, answer, rival
i don't want to see this killer word again, unless we're talking about the real thing. (now a real killer when he picked up the ZF1 would have immediately asked about the little red button on the bottom of the gun) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hope Google does mount a good competition against Ebay and Paypal.. they way overcharge for their listing fees, I'm sure it doesn't cost half what they charge.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5A company aiming to make money. Way to go Capt. Obvious.
You know what the beauty of a capitalistic society is, in 5 years, there will be another group of people who will be challenging Google. And no, I am not waiting. I don't know about you but here in the States, you are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.
Noone thinks Google is a charity. WTF are you talking about? I personally happen to like their products thank you very much. But I don't think they are a charity or are affiliated with one in any way. - pamon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If paypal was regulated like most banks and financial institutions, they couldn't get away with 75% of the CRAP they do. limiting funds, questioning transactions, and misc. stuff. Hope this takes off... would love to see 3-5 MAJOR players to go up against paypal. No major transaction players are around to go against them with the ease of use and ebay interaction that they have (and yes, i know ebay owns paypal).
- ACoolie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a lot of reasons why this is totally wrong. First of all, Google owns lots of random domain names, just for speculation, not nescessarily future products. Also, if anyone registers a domain with "google" in it, Google has the right to claim they are infringing on their trademark and get the domain for free.
- mylkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly, Paypal works against you. In my own experience, I lost $900 as a victim of fraud. And Paypal does everything in it's power to keep me from getting my money back. It's a long story, and I don't need to go into detail about that. But if Google came up with something, I'd like to see it.
- blaksaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pigphucker: I have this problem too. I emailed digg support about it and they said it was due to a firefox extension. But, after uninstalling all of my extensions, the bug was still there. So it's definitely either a digg bug or some quirk with firefox (I am using 1.0.8 ubuntu btw).
- LayZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This shouldn't be front page, just some blog speculation based on some domains? Hardly like he stumbled across a business plan.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope Google gets something good going, i personally don't dislike PayPal as it's a very useful service and their new mobile payments platform could be pretty cool if it gets going - the problem with PayPal however, like for most people, is that the bloody fees are simply outrageous.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Which is why eBay will probably move to block this service from working with eBay.
- gaznet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys, i have just attempted to sign up...
Just to let you know it's only avalible to the US.. oh well i can wait for UK..
this is the seller signup page... https://checkout.google.com/sell/signup?entryPage=ac¤tPage=ac&lastPage=ac&agent=Merchant& - sameerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is inaccurate, though i am big google fan and would like to see them developing a payment portal, as the article claims, "There is no way they would let just anybody register a domain with "Google" in it — especially since Google is one of their clients." , the reason and probably the only reason why that domain is registered by MarkMoniter is that it contains the name google in it.
- Ravirel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I was hoping that they would call their Pay-Pal-like service "G-Money" but I guess this will do."
Haha. I love it. - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Scary. Google knows people's interests, e-mails and now shopping habits.
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am sure paypal is here to stay...
Ok..google is great but everything else they do is pretty much crap..or underfeatured and redundant... google earth for instance is only a better version of worldwind from what i see...in search Google's size is begining to be a hinderance... the search result are often litered with junk... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Food, drinks and everything else you buy don't cost what you're charged either.
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Please be better than Paypal! We need some competition to improve payment services.
Oh yeah. And Paypal sucks! It should be cheaper to use Paypal with eBay since they're co-owned. But I think it's more like a premium to use it. It should be a free add-on to use Paypal on eBay. - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hmm. On the one hand I'm pleased that there is finally a competitor for the awful Paypal, on the other, there is no way I will ever trust any of my information to the equally loathsome Google
- beebware, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1I take it you've heard that Google have increased their fees to be the same as Paypal: http://blog.rac.me.uk/2009/03/11/google-checkout-s ...
- Nanobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This guy is making assumptions that history has shown aren't sound assumptions. Google buys interesting new domains all the time. I've seen sites that list pages and pages of domains that were bought by Google but never used. These include everything from gbrowser.com to googlemotherf**ker.com. They just buy them to keep others from buying them first. There isn't yet any reason to assume that Google will use it for anything.
- JohnnySoftware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yahoo actually made a ton of money by investing in Google.
- stalinvlad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just in case:
Did you know you can't accept payment for pron with paypal
Or to put it another way you can't sell porn & use paypal to accept payment - wintermute1974, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One guy's blog stating that a domain name has been registered, and this is proof of an entire online banking system? That, ladies and gentlemen, is what is called "leaping to conclusions". No digg.
- dvdd127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i doubt anything will ever kill paypal
