My house please - skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Free, ubiquitous Wi-Fi would completely yank the rug out from under the mobile phone carriers....
DO IT!!!! - iancgi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15lol in less than 10 years you will be able to pick up a wifi signal anywhere on the planet.

Bangalore, India

Mexico City - HolierThanYe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I agree. And it'll all be free thanks to the great and mighty Google. I for one welcome our new search engine overlords.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Otherwise known as "An informal poll of where the people reading this poll live."
- ipodman715, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Here's the screenshot: http://bayimg.com/aagMNaaBg
- chattin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7THE WHOLE UHF SPECTRUM!
- feckineejit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Boston?
- greekgoat91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4NYC or all of Long Island
- ozydingo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Boston!!
It's a pretty small city with a high density of people who would greatly appreciate the service. A lot of college folk (potential Google employees, eh?) Could be a good marketing move on their part?
Of course, I'm quite biased :-) - al3x24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Google makes money by shedding the light of the internet on more and more people. The more people using the internet would, more times than not, translate into more people using Google and clicking their ads.
- cambrown99, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Comcast and Verizon are gonna love this...
- iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't think this is an official google poll, just a downloadsquad hopeful poll.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3we need municipal wifi. a few cities have already adopted it, but until wifi becomes near ubiquitous, a lot of potential applications like VoIP cellphones and portable internet radios won't be feasible to implement.
- ohmuffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2why is ^ being dugg down... Google has an office in Cambridge (as well as other places in the world), and would be cheaper to blanket Boston and Cambridge as a whole... not even to mention all the colleges in the area... people in Boston are probably pretty sick of paying for starbucks/tmobile wifi
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see them take on the density of NYC, then i'd like to see comcast ***** *****.
- Narfmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2London please. We can finally ditch those crappy T-Mobile hotspots that litter the place up.
- DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No images section? That sucks
- kaaBOOM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2None of those cities are going to see it anytime soon, for the following reasons 1. Google is already dragging their feet on building the network in San Francisco. Probably because they have yet to figure out a way to make money from FREE WiFi. 2. The only reason they built the network in Mountain View, is because it's Google's HQ. It's a way for them to keep in contact with their employees, while they are eating lunch at cafes in Downtown Mountain View, and things like that.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If they build another Googleplex here (as was rumored), I would hope they would provide WiFi.
- ohmuffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1google has an office in cambridge, its across the hall from wis.dm
(its not a "googleplex" but its still a start) - lionslair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There was no option for Western Australia / Perth
- Cowfrommars, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1NEW ZEALAND. Please and thank you.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1rather than waiting for google to bring it to your city (which would come with the stipulation of being tied to earthlink) you can start a petition in your own city for municipal wifi. how it's run would be up to the city, and the community can decide on the details of the wifi service.
despite the trespasses of the bush administration, we still live in a democratic society, and people need to realize that by making use of their democratic prerogative and participating in local government, they have the power to effect positive changes in their community. and chances are, if it's good for the community, other people will get behind it as well--that is the essence of grassroots movements.
instead of complaining about having to pay taxes and being only interested in tax cuts, it's much better to find ways to put your tax dollars to good use to benefit the community. - Dmaulchris, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I wish I could vote for san jose. "capital of ***** silicon valley"
*has nothing to do with the fact I am living there. - idean360, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Canada. With free Wifi everywhere Mobile Phone data rates would have to improve, and broadband speeds for home use would have to be faster to compete.
- HyperDav, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I totally had no idea they were doing this. Very cool.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2If it is like the hi res parts of Google Maps, it will only be in the most expensive cities...where the residents can easily afford paying for it anyway.
- tmcdigg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wherever it is MOST expensive to get wireless internet access in the USA, put the local wireless internet monopoly OUT OF BUSINESS.
I don't care if it's AT&T, SPRINT, VERIZON, QWEST, ALLTELL, or a CABLE COMPANY WIRELESS. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2hows about some free wifi in aus?
- bogatash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1700mhz SPECTRUM
- leonbev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The obvious answer would be EVERYWHERE! It wouldn't have to be free, either!
Hell... I'd happily pay $50 a month if I had guaranteed high speed wireless broadband wherever my laptop happens to be that day.
Telling AT&T and Comcast where to stick all their add-on "regulatory" and "franchise" fees every month would simply be an added bonus! - ipodman715, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, it's finally live now!
- xBBx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think NYC should be the next area since it's such a highly populated city. It would be a true test of what they could accomplish if they can provide that many connections without a hitch.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you wouldn't need to rely on closed cellular networks which telecoms have locked down to block access to non-carrier-approved devices and applications. that's the difference between the public internet and proprietary closed networks like cellular networks. once ubiquitous wifi availability is a reality, we'll start seeing VoIP wifi-enabled cellphones. ***** the expensive bandwidth costs (which are hugely inflated by the telecoms) and crappy transfer rates.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1why not support municipal wifi then? that's the direction we're heading in anyway, and eventually it'll give us ubiquitous wifi access wherever you go. such blanket wifi coverage would be a huge technological boon for communications and new markets of internet enabled portable devices. screw closed cellular networks that don't allow access to 3rd party developers. U.S. cellphone carriers have basically killed technological innovation on cellphone networks.
- bogatash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Earth
- JrGhoull, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1hahah i voted for NYC because i'm in mass and if mass is ever going to get it, then it would be after ny gets its. i'm with kaa though. google did this as a bit of an experiment and to be able to keep in constant contact with their employees. i think they've had alot of troubles with the whole system though...so much so that it probably doesnt seem worth it to them to bother trying to do it in other states.
- andregriffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Where's Atlanta?! Gah...
- CYR1X, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1ohio people, thats where wifi is needed
- espire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This poll's winner is almost entirely based on the population of the cities, as their digger percentage is likely quite similar.
- archer75, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The internet is for porn.
- samurimaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Id say Vancouver but only if they mean Vancouver,Washington
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The people living in Manhattan either make plenty enough money to pay for broadband, or are CHOOSING to live poorly. There is no reason to live in Manhattan otherwise. Rent in Queens is about half of what it is in Manhattan. And I don't have any sympathy for the idiots who make $40,000 a year but want the "experience" of Manhattan and therefore living in a closet and compplain about it.
- hannahmar, on 06/11/2009, -2/+2I would love for Chicago to have free WiFi. That would be amazing.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Eh, I had a preference and don't live in any of the areas... For example blanketing all of L.A. (at least while the signal is still technically wifi) would be ridiculously impractical, so I wouldn't vote for it
