- attackman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More than likely, this will just be free hosting for iCal formatted calendars, with Google building in links to gMail and gTalk. Say I'm talking to a friend on gTalk and he says he wants to hangout this weekend. I highlight that, push a button and it posts to my calendar. If I'm so inclined, I sync that calendar with Sunbird or Evolution. I then sync my PDA. If it's something really important, I can have the calendar trigger a gMail reminder.
Now, Google would have the ability to target ads based on date. They see we're hanging out this weekend, they pop on ads for Serenity. Couple this with location-based advertising (with the coming WiFi), they can then deliver an ad for the local cinema running Serenity, with movie times (something Google already can do).
This is one more step in creating perfect targeted advertising. An ad based on who I am, what I'm talking about, where I'm sitting and when I want to do something. I'm all for relevant advertising, not the haphazard advertising TV, radio and Web 1.0 deliver. - pierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a gmail user, I'd personally welcome a calender app that integrates into gmail... I dont think they are trying to redefine the online calender, just make that service available to their users. I know a lot of yahoo mail users wont go to gmail bc there is no calendar.
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great, more ways for Google to spy on you.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@theone -
I think you miss part of the good part about why google is so great right now...Do you think that yahoo and msn would feel the need to spend the $$$ to upgrade their interface and increase thier MBs for free, if it weren't for google?! Yea some how I don't think they would have. Maybe a couple years down the road they would have. But google is bringing back competition to the free things on the internet. It causes everybody else to rethink about their free product or service. Same goes with their search... I mean MSN and Yahoo searches even LOOK like google searches now. - Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet on Tuesday we get gCal and maybe, just maybe, gTunes. Because i just isn't enough.
- andellmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PDA & iCal support and GMail integration would be appreciated by many people. Launch it! Launch it!
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google could do a lot with this like......
Tieing it in with Gmail. Say like you have to leave for a meeting at 7:00. Every one who has Gmail ether has the Gmail program or keeps logged in. So when its 7:00 The Gmail program pops up and says you have to leave or When your logged in to Gmail a window can pop up and alert you (this way might be a little better because then people don't have to install anything) - vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right...because a calendar service will sell so many ads!
- TomPetty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great news.. been waiting to see googles take on a calendar for a while now. i hope it merges with gmail intuitively.
- edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will it sync with PDAs?
- drseth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True. http://calendar.google.com redirects to google.com and http://fish.google.com gives standard error.
- junkfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being a huge user of Gmail, I have been anxiously hoping for a Google Calendar. Ok, so I know that Google has become the top dog so it's not cool and anti-establishment to like them, but they still put out good stuff. GTalk sucked, but Google Maps is awesome. One thing that people seem to forget is they put out more stuff than their competitors, which is good. But people only remember the last product and forget that they put out 5 things in one year - 3 were cool, one was OK and one was lame. (Example numbers.)
Here's hoping the calendar is really coming and that it lives up to the Google name. I live in Gmail and would love to have the calendar to go with it.
Wish list: Ability to send email that creates an appt. For example, a message to myaddress.calendar@gmail.com creates an appointment with the subject of the email put as the subject of the appointment and any body text of the email is also kept with the appointment. That would be cool. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gSharp just sounds too familiar :D
- section31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1been waiting for a calender for months.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should've warned us that it logs you out of your Google Account... =P

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/txt/google_dom.html - allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no a calendar isn't original but a lot of us have switched to gmail since it came out and, at least for me, there's a need for an online calendar - yahoo's is decently tied into the whole yahoo world, but Google has no such thing. Given the slick simplicity of gmail, it'll probably look a lot like http://Planzo.com and hopefully tie into a lot of other google crap. But yeah otherwise I'm excited.
- krisse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Show me a better calendar then.
- ccbeam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is just doing what other major companies want to do. A "one stop shop"
- CarLBanks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This would be cool.
- silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is great because there are no other available calender applications. I always wondered, "when is someone going to write a calender for my computer, maybe on the web?" and now Google has seen the void and intends to fill it with their genius.
Some other offerings Google might consider inventing to fill a need:
Raincoats
Pencil Sharpeners
Toilet Paper
Forks - xorvious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can't believe how fast people will slam/bitch/flame a product that isn't even available yet and will be free! There are so many damn things in the world to bitch about and here you are putting down something that NO ONE IS MAKING YOU USE! Get an f'ing life and try being a PRODUCTIVE member of society instead of a whiner.
- resprung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google behaves like a millionaire buying cool stuff for fun.
Remember the haphazardness of their IPO? - There is no master plan, they're just making it up as they go.
Google video SUCKED in early beta, like gTalk. They'll certainly mature their services, but the company as such is all over the place :-) - jawsomemax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i hope google can release a calender with their logo slammed on it.. because whenever they throw their logo on anything, and i show my friends, they are impressed... why? when there are other things better out there???
because google is a name people identify with, if i showed them a BETTER calander and slapped "uggabugga!" on the top, they would be like
ur an idiot. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hmmm.. Well then at least we know Google isn't launching a Fish service. =]
I'm sort of off google after gTalk. It didn't bring anything new to the table, and was generally hopeless. More unneeded market obfuscation. GMail is getting old, fast, too. The new MSN and Yahoo! Beta's ROCK compared to the current GMail service. Google Maps = Virtual Earth, and Google Search is filling up with spam.
They'd better have something good up their sleeves. - krisse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Your arrogance makes that statement untrustworthy and irrelevant.
Produce good arguments instead of making a fool of yourself. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0WOW AWESOME A CALENDAR OMG ITS SO ORIGINAL. LETS PRAISE IT
- xorvious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0sorry for being harsh, long bad week and tired of listening to ppl complain..
- Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0quit posting about google. google this google that, nobody cares.
- Tech_Junkie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0great so they will have a Calendar that sucks just like their email service
