- eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+77Major props to the person who submitted this for catching it before it even went live.
- jwvelez, on 10/12/2007, -18/+73why THE HELL are you using I.E?
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -11/+63I was just able to login. Pretty slick interface.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Anyone else hear that sound?
That's the collective sound of the reality check hitting every other web-based calendar startups that was built in the hopes of being bought by Google. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+50I love google, but it's kinda scary to think about how much information they have about me.
Not only do they know everything I read and say (search, news, gmail, gtalk..), but now they know where I am and what I'm doing, too.. - dieselsnow, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44It's Live!
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34One of the best online calendar interfaces yet. Love the overlays!!
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31This is so incredibly easy to use. It's faster than even the desktop apps.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27I do have to offer a few criticisms.
1. This should be more integrated with GMail.
2. Where are the export options? I don't expect Google to give me an app to sync this with my iPod calendar on windows (hint, hint, make Apple ashamed of themselves) but I at least expect the option to export it in iCal format so I can do it myself.
This definately has several improvments over 30boxes (weekday option for scheduling for one), but 30boxes does offer several things this does not. Also, Kiko just came out with an update today that I should probably check out too, but even before the update Kiko's features just spank what Google has unfurled here.
I got a lot of Google love (as seen by my own comment that I am replying to), but after the dust settles, I think Google's only really advantage here is that they're Google. - LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28This is awesome. I can't wait until I get it to synch with my iPod
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Wow- drag and move events to different days/times. Very nice.
- mrblankone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Best of all, it prints out a nice clean PDF!
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You can import iCal or CSV (Outlook) format. Cellphone notification via SMS. Also notify by e-mail or pop-up windows. Neat. Let's see how long it will remain zippy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26I'm sticking with my Dilbert calendar on the my desk.
- theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24-digg for using ie
- Dave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Actually, there are export options. Click the little down arrow next to the name of your calender. Then choose Calendar settings. There are XML and ics formats available and they provide a public (configurable) feed as well as one that's just for you.
Also, I'd be willing to bet GMail will see an upgrade within a week that will have some more integration features. There were screenshots on Digg recently that showed the ability to add an event to the calendar straight out of an email. - jmechy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20It doesn't support opera officially. However, when i tell it to "try anyway" it seems to work mostly fine.
- Dave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Expect an GMail update soon with more integration. Notice that the calendar has a link in the top corner to gmaill, but not the other way around. It appears they haven't released a GMail update yet, but I would expect one is on the way. Actually, I haven't even seen any official word from Google that Google Calendar even exists.
- timeisapear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14drag cursor across days to schedule events that span more than one day! perfect!
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I like this. I successfully exported my Yahoo Calendar to a CSV file and imported that file into CL2 with no problems whatsoever. The week view is nice showing the blocks of time used by each event. Also, I like being able to have many different calendars that I can turn on and off. These multiple calendars can overlay their data to the display and it is very cool. I will put all of school events on a school calendar and personal events on a personal calendar. I can then selectively view them, awesome!
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I just logged into http://calendar.google.com. Tried it out too. Very slick. Its even better because its pretty fast, very easy and intuitive to add people events etc. Much much faster than Outlook. Searching for friend's calendars is a very very neat idea.
I especially love the search for calendars and for public calendar's. Great concept. Try it out for yourself with keywords like Google, Linux etc.
What they kind of left out was a deep integration of Google maps into the calendar. For example, when you search for Linux, you should be able to say Linux in Los Angeles, CA which should return you public events for LA.
But, overall, a great effort. - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Works wonderfully!
They really have gotten the interfaces right. I like how you can drag the events in the weekly view to change their times. Brilliant!. - navinjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24Great, I'll just put this in my Google calendar to check back when it's live...
- bpowah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Not bad. Reminds me a bit too much of Outlook.
A few nits:
Why cant I schedule something that spans midnight? 9pm Sat to 10am Sun for example..
There's a way, but it's not quick or intuitive..
I see a similar problem scheduling multi-day events near a month-end.
I wish you could scroll continuously between months (in month view)
And i kinda wish the day view had a zoom-type slider.
..and would continuously scroll between days.
I scheduled a 6 minute event (total solar eclipse a few years from now) but at first glance, it appears to last a half-hour and starts on the hour. I hope i dont miss it!
I'm looking forward to it's integration into gmail and gmaps (meet me where, and when?) ..and integration into the google toolbar (select some text on a random page, right click, and if it looks like a date, allow "add to calendar") - L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here's what I did:
1. Setup a new gmail/google account
2. Create a calendar on NEW account
3. Setup google to forward ALL messages to phone (via ##########@vtex.com)
4. share my NEW account with my DEFAULT/OLD account
5. Allow my OLD account to edit my NEW account
So all edits to my NEW account will be emailed to my NEW gmail... and then SMS'd to my phone - msaeger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12The problem with Google and beta is everything is in beta forever so it doesn't mean much. Gmail still says beta even.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11slick, intuitive interface. outlook just got pwned. hard.
cl2 seems to cover just about all bases any normal user would want, leaving out specialty features that only niche users will need. import csv, export xml or ical, sms and email notify, public calender invites, guest invites, gmap locations, print pdf, multiple tag- or label-like calenders...and, of course, google's bread and butter: search.
really, what more is the average user going to need? - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Good luck getting microsoft and google to cooperate. To quote steve balmer "Im going to ***** bury eric schmidt"
- Bellyache5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Sync between iCal and Google Calendar would make this a truly killer app. It's cool that I can have iCal sync up to Google Calendar, but if it could be a 2-way read/write then I'd pee my pants. I want it that badly.
- CoAX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Am I the only one who would love a Sync with Palm feature? This is awfully missing in all recent web calendar attempts!
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13True, they have access to a whole lot of information about you.
But think about it this way. You're one of millions of Google users. Do you think they really care about anything you do, or would bother ruining their good reputation by spying on people for no good reason?
If anything, I love the fact that Google has all my data. It means I can move between multiple machines without a hitch, and easily search through everything I've emailed, searched or IMed to another person.
Is it a risk? Sure, but I'm willing to take it. - voltronguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Why no Verizon for SMS notification?
- holotone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14iCal / XML support seems to be built in, at least for export.
- timtop, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21The potential for abuse is enormous. We have the NSA setting up shop in AT&T data centers. What makes anyone think this data will be secure? THIS is dead scary.
Remember when the Gov subpoenad (sorry i cant spell) Google for search results? I dont know if they gave in but it doesnt matter because the government controls this country and can/will get what they want eventually.
What if that happened with Google Calendar. The last thing I want is the NSA being able to track my movments and activities on this type of level. They may do it like the wiretaps as well (they will tell you AFTER they see ur data).
Maybe im paranoid because i did a paper on Google in school, but most people have no idea how this is leading to a transparent world where security and privacy are not to be taken for granted. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You just don't get it do you? Microsoft isn't trusted by most. Google is a real viable alternative platform.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Same for me (with Opera 9). Would be nice to have it officially supported though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13this is the one they are currently using - http://www.google.com/calendar/images/calendar_sm2.gif
- genxian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You can add the US Holidays Calendar to get all of those.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Like I posted above, they support verizon for their text messaging service:
http://toolbar1.google.com/send/sms/index.php
I tried it an it indeed works, no idea why they don't (for now hopefully) support it in google calendar. - Standaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11In the help section they have an entire topic about integrating with gmail. These features don't appear to be available yet though.
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i just did a search on digg... the first story i found was from 412 days ago... lol:
http://digg.com/software/Comming_soon,_Google_Calendar_
Check out one of the comments:
"i highly doubt google is going to make a calendar app"
:i agree with elbaso...even though google pwns all, this story is skeptical"
hehe - tange1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yea I want a means to sync my outlook calender to google and i'd be a happy camper.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And yet again google web integrated OS comes 1 step closer to reality.
- hausome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I believe they started the 2GB trend for email.
- kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5One other thing Google calendar could really use is either a Tasks or Notes section. I use outlook and use the tasks section quite a bit, its really good for putting reminders to complete goals that don't have a difinitive date to be accomplished on. Other than that though, so far Googles calendar has an excellent layout.
- cdmonz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"Looks like Google has not yet completely packaged my life into a single tidy site."
Thats coming out next week. : ) - diargasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yea, as long as you don't add an event called "assassinate Bush", I think you'll be fine
- funksta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I've only used it for 5 minutes, but I really really like it. Kicks the crap out of 30 boxes, in my opinion.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I hope to use this at work so we can finally stop having "pow wows" to synch our spiral bound calendars every other day. Sigh....
- torgerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just going to do a test.. but should be easy to setup notification via email, then setup a rule in GMail that says forward all calendar notifications to MYPHONENUMBER@vtext.com. That is verizons SMS gateway ..
