- ROBERTCAT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Awesome, digg is in the screenshot: http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/index.html
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29As far as I am concerned, google can have my bookmark information. My password and cookie information, I am a little more concerned about. But I am not going to turn into one of the "OMFG!! GOOGLE BOTS CANT READ MY POINTLESS EMAIL!" kind of people.
I trust my information with google, I suppose I will be just a LITTLE more cautious this time around. - dustinhoffman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18The next version will have "Contextual Bookmarking"... You will suddenly see new bookmarks from sponsors based on the bookmarks you already have.
/Drunken Ramble - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17It'd be a Googlepop, and it'dbe the best designed, tastiest, most badassest lollipop EVAR.
And you'd love it, too! - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24As I understand it, you just sell your soul to Google and then Sergey gives you a lollipop.
- dayquil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12If I wanted something I made to be big news I'd make darn sure to get digg.com in the screenshot too. :)
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If I could sync all of my extensions too, that will help out a ton.
- Standaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Digg Google Firefox = frontpage
My only problem is that on ffx Windows I don't name my bookmarks and just rely on the favicon, but when I sync to ffx Mac, I just have a bunch of invisible bookmarks. - blankoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The hooks slowly sink further into our hides. Seemingly very handy extension and all but....do we really want Google to have all our: Bookmarks, history, persistent cookies and passwords stored on their servers?
Anyone else notice how Google is slowly inching it's way towards owning us all with their very handy features? Slowly disarming us all....
/all your information are belong to us. - Google. - PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have to say, congrats to google for creating a solution to the common-bookmarks on multiple computers problem.
However, the one fault i see with this is that it's not quite as invisible as other solutions (foxmarks) and it doesn't allow you to use the browser whilst it's doing it's synchronising which is by far the most frustrating thing.
They need to do this in the background. - drycounty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7At long last, I can safely say goodbye to Safari (and .Mac)
- konspence, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I trust google with my saved passwords; they are encrypted aren't they? (even on the server)
- warofwrath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you do know that you can check your del.icio.us bookmarks from any browser (not just Flock)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i use portable fiefox exclusively.. micro seconds slower starting up but other than that it is cool.
portable apps are the way applications should be. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The Googlepop would be extremely functional, with more taste than competing Micropops and would last longer than the popular Yahoopop. The wrapper would be eyeblindingly bad and those who spent a hundred bucks a year would be much happier with their .Macinpop.
- jsleno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cross-platform Firefox synchronization? Cool! I got four of them I have been trying to keep sync'd (2 XP, 2 Linux) and this looks like the solution. Yet another reason to stick with Google over Yahoo, and Firefox over IE.
I trust google. Even though I probably shouldn't, I trust them. - chickentonight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Got to agree with you: Foxmarks for me.
Simple. Transparent.
However Foxmarks sync requests seem to block other traffic for a few seconds. That's my only gripe. - ntwrkguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it is the convenience of the whole thing that is going to grab the attention of all the public, most of whom will not even second guess it like we are.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm using Foxmarks as well and it's been working great for me across both Macs and PCs. It's perhaps the most useful extension I have, although I'll probably try the Google solution at some point. Anybody know if there's a utility that will sync your settings and extensions across computers? I'm always tweaking things and minor differences between extensions and settings drive me nuts.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have to appreciate Google standing behind Firefox by releasing something this useful *only* for it.
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think of few of you get off on saying Bon Echo
- rainwater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can encrypt all your data with a pin. Also, the docs clearly say the pin is only stored on computers with the extension, so Google wouldn't be able to easily view your data.
- Phantomwhale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad they're reading my gmail, personally I can never find the time to keep up with it all...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Larry Page and Sergey Brin read your Gmail every night. Now they will look at your bookmarks too and - more.
- Flyerman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah I use fomarks too but it doesn't store passwords or cookies
- poet_will, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I keep getting an error while syncing. "Error '51 request timeout' occurred while syncing, please try again later"
I really think this will be a cool extension, though I agree with some people above about the Session Saver extension being disabled. - tlfillingim, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7how does this work? i'm not sure i want google to store this stuff.
i haven't tried it but i'm leaning more toward the solution of having portable firefox on a usb drive. - chrisrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fourth'ed!
Including this one, I now have 21 extentions.
If I cant have them Sync'ed how about having them exported and imported
anyone know of any ways to do this? - lightmywifire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone else having trouble setting up a pin? It keeps running into an error when i get to that point in the setup.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yoshi, you might want to google for "Master Password Firefox" without quotes.
- ntwrkguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i work in the help desk unit of a NYC public sector agency, and we just got these systems that are locked down pat permissions wise for the end-users within the smaller branch of this big agency because of the contract we have with a company. no programs can be installed at all. acrobat reader v4 and you cannot upgrade it. i passed the word that you are able to use a usb key to plug into your monitor and have portable firefox on it. do you realize how many people are really really happy now with this? bravo google.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thp4 is actually a Yahoo cluster server, trained to have a 'male-threat-like' response to anything positive Google does.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I love Session Saver, but I'll switch to this for a while just because of the synched tabs across machines. To be able to close the browser at work, go home, then open it up and see the same tabs still open? Hell yeah!
- groogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally I solved this problem by using del.icio.us. The delicious plugin for firefox is great (and unobtrusive), and because it's web-based, it is always common across multiple browers (i have it setup at home, work, and on my laptop).
IMHO tagging is a far better way to sort bookmarks: how carefully do you categorize your bookmarks? For me, it was always evolving.. when I first start out on a new subject, i make a broad folder, like "web development". Then as I get more in depth and getting more bookmarks, I make folders inside like "css", "programming", "html" .. eventually "css" gets "layout" "lists" "menus", etc..
With tagging, when you initally tag the page, you just use "layout columns css webdev" and you instantly can look at any of those depending on what you're looking for, and the best part, as time goes on, you don't need to do any resorting.
I initially just used del.icio.us for the shared bookmarks aspect.. but I have to say it totally changed the way I "bookmark" pages and I'd never go back to a folder/hierarchy-based system again. - grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Regarding session saver.
I just tested this out with Mix Tab plus extension and did not get conflict or prompt to disable.
All my tabs (session) resumed as normal with Mix Tab Plus.
Now what I am really wondering and about to test out is this Google Browser Sync with Portable Firefox... - blubloblu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, orkut is one of the links. The social website that google owns but hardly ever mentions. Also, go into the "My account" link when you're signed in and at www.google.com they'res a link that says "third-parties allowed to access my account"
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately, GooglePop(tm) is still in Beta(tm).
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Ordinant Aww, sounds like someone doesnt wanna share their widdle wibrary of work with the big bad Google monster. If you have nothing to hide, then why do you care if Google kindly stores a bunch of encrypted data? Wait, let me guess, it's a plot with the aliens at Area-51?
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@salmonmoose: http://dl.google.com/firefox/google-browsersync.xpi
There, problem solved. - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a nifty little FF extension that I use called "Google bookmarks Button" which basically puts your bookmarks on Google's boomarks and makes them accessible from the FF toolbar. I don't know how many people use it or know of it but I found it a very decent solution for having common bookmarks on several computers.
Here's a link, I hope it's useful to everone else...
http://firefox.phpmagazine.net/2006/04/google_bookmarks_button_for_fi.html - strom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use portable firefox also. It has come in handy many, many times. Couldn't go back.
- HyperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes but on the googlepop wrapper you would get several non intrusive text based advertisements
- kleepklop, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1so have I
- methlp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just tested this out on my WinXP laptop and my OSX laptop. The syncing appears to work fine. Encryption is a nice feature given all the piracy concerns. A couple of issues. Because Browser Sync also has session saving, it asked to disable my Session Saver plugin, which did a great job of saving sessions throughout your normal browsing use, so that just in case your browser crashed, you would be able to start up right where you left off before the crash. Browser Sync only syncs when you exit normally/. When I opened some new tabs on my XP machine and then used Task Manager to end the Firefox process, none of the new tabs/windows were saved. It did not save the session so that it could be restored on my Mac, and it couldn't even restore the session on the same machine to the state from just before the killed process.
This is one of the best reasons I loved the Session Saver extension. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
so Google wouldn't be able to easily view your data.
You just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or every time a user like dork101 posts, it seems he is storing all of our private data, perhaps he's plotting somethi..... whoops, wrong spot.
- Iam8up, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It transfers in https, actually, so Google will record it but anyone poking around the network won't be able to read it. Once it's on their servers, however, it's up to their security.
This is exactly why I prefer people to NOT store their logins in cookies or have Firefox remember their login information XD - SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im on the hedge of how i feel with google having my bookmarks...maybe i will just use foxmarks with my own server...
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How much clearer do you want it : your important information is encrypted, they cannot view it, nor would they want to view it. It's not a conspiracy, they will probably analyze some of your data to make money (that's what people do to stay alive these days [make money]) and provide you with a FREE and nifty service. Someone get me a box of Kleenex, please.
