- jeremymccurdy, on 07/15/2009, -3/+26There's this little button called Reply, learn to use it.
- HallyWooD, on 07/15/2009, -0/+19I'm sorry.
- oldhick, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16Notes is awful, but far more companies than you would imagine use it.
- snagglefoof, on 07/15/2009, -2/+12I use Notes at work. I have to.
It makes me want to kill myself. - tnerd, on 07/14/2009, -7/+16Google is like a slow poision for the other tech companies. It kills slowly but surely..
- bluehouse, on 07/15/2009, -5/+13Awesome! The 3 people who still use Notes will rejoice. Ahhhhh... Now I will sit back wait for the inevitable "Notes is teh best evar" comments
- KevinRosa, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6no, really. tell him about it!
- geoken, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6I'm glad it included tasks as a standard feature. I use it all the time and now that it's a standard feature perhaps desktop clients/mobile clients that interface with google's services can support tasks (for example, it would be cool if Thunderbird could sync tasks with gmail).
- sodoh, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8... and let the Lotus Notes flaming begin! :)
Interesting, but I think if all you are using Notes for is mail and calendaring then you are probably wasting your money. I take it that normal applications (like.. NSF, Composite Applications/Plugins, XPages, Web Services, Java/Lotusscript agents) it won't be able to migrate. - bluehouse, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Lucky for me in the 11 years I've been in IT, I have never supported a company that uses Notes
- JimSwarthow, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7Lotus Notes is crap, ask anyone who's ever had to support it. - Google is great and all but anyone thinking they're gonna bring down Microsoft is licking frog-bellies
- PRlME, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6I agree with you there, when open office thought they where catching up to MSOffice, MS dropped 2007 and it was a huge leap for MSOffice. I notice MS only steps up there game(and dramatically) when there is strong competition at there front doors.
- sleze, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4People still use Lotus Notes? Holy 1999!
- tommyny04, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3cuil maube???
- blablablerg, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Google task management should be integrated with google calendar
- snagglefoof, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Coll!
- FutureGuy, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3He wanted to make no one misses out on his genius.
- FutureGuy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I have used Google Apps in past, given its a web based app but still there were times I would have preferred notepad. If I had to use a free tool I would pick openoffice.
- ArkRep, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Telll me about it ....
- PRlME, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4so far for today I got the google voice invite and set that up already. On Gmail there is now a "Task" button added to my Gmail. and now gApps has new stuff. I feel like a kid at the candy store today "Geek Powers Armed!"
- eternal464, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2The only thing the community college system of Maine uses is Notes. I know, as it's the only other application I have open right now.
And yes, it sucks. - tommyny04, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Lotus notes isnt that bad ... Had to use it at one of my previous jobs. I enjoy Exchange better though.
- Pxtl, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Yup. This is why anti-trust laws are important - if competition does not exist, the company is free to sit on their hands and raise prices without offering more services.
Look at IE during the long, dead time between the fall of Netscape and the rise of Firefox. - dragossh, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2I feel for you, mate.
- tonmil, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Not a very intuitive UI ...especially how to delete a task. Yes I can see the trash can... but still??? And a simple sort by task subject (with one click) would be useful instead of the manual alphabetic sorting
- specialknfnd, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3then you've never worked for the government. so yes, lucky for you
- chicagospur, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Microsoft offers Exchange on line too.
- sbohan, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Really misleading title, the new tool is not to sync with Lotus notes but to migrate data from Notes to Google Apps.
I have been looking for a way to sync my work Notes calendar to my personal iPhone for months now and I'm just about beginning to lose hope that it ever will :).
Unfortunately as someone mentioned, many companies cannot migrate from Notes as they have too much invested in it away from the mail and calendering functions. My firm has tens of thousands few user (and many user) bespoke applications built on the Notes platform that cannot be migrated elsewhere (without substantial costs). - aasukisuki, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4Lotus Notes is still around?
- liquisoft, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2It is.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Migrating to 'cloud' ***** is not innovation. It's a way to exacerbate the ***** that is corporate security.
- Aletheiaphile, on 07/15/2009, -2/+3Could someone tell me if OpenOffice or Google Apps has had an innovation other than being free? Making a free version of another organizations product in order to pull said organizations leash is not innovation. I'm talking to you SUN.
- chewbie, on 07/15/2009, -2/+3I support notes but since I'm at the beginning of my career, I can't compare it to exchange.
There's a lot of problems here and there but it's not exactly just a mail client and I feel it's more stable than outlook - PRlME, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1i was hoping to have calender integrated as a tab or some sort to gmail. As I read my email then set up my dates accordingly. I find my self reading email Loading Calender switching back to email then back to calender, because of that i find it easier just to email my self a reminder(that way it auto sets up in calender).
- Hercules, on 07/15/2009, -3/+4Wow Google syncs with software nobody wants to use.
- sodoh, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Depends a lot on the version to be honest. A lot of places still use Version 6 which is like 3-7 years old depending on the exact version number. So yes compared to current technologies (and certainly current version of Notes) it sucks. Some even use version 5 and lower which are not even supported anymore.
Latest version is 8.5 with 8.5.1 beta just recently started and due out later this year. - tonmil, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Finally Tasks. I love it. Seriously. If Tasks bi-directionally sync with the iPhone, via Google Sync (free service) http://www.google.com/mobile, then I have everything I need.
Let's hope it has the full features of Outlook such as categorization and sorting - Chewie67, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Do any of you actually use Google Apps for your business email?
It seems enticing, but I'm nervous about giving up all my business privacy over to Google. It would definitely be easier than running an Exchange Server like I do now, but I'm it's a huge leap of faith... - whiskeybravo, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Well...I'm not NOT licking frogs...
- JimSwarthow, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1the last version I supported (before we migrated to Exchange) was 5 something. it was a nightmare. I'd rather use Pine.
- DarkShroud, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2@chewbie do you mean Outlook Express? Because Outlook 2007 is pretty damn good. I will admit that I did not have to use previous versions full time. I don't recall ever having trouble with 2003.
- dwtc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I have to use Notes at work (large, international company)... I don't know how the current version (8) is, but we're on version 6, and it absolutely blows. They keep saying that someday we'll move up to the current released version, and all I can say is that it had better be a whole lot better than what we have now. It probably can't be worse.
- Munk3y, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Yea but unless Google does something better with Google Docs, Microsoft's going to surpass quick. You can't even print a spreadsheet in Google Spreadsheet without grid lines all over it unless you use a hack-ish workaround. Even if you use that workaround, the page ends up looking worse than if you just had the grid lines in the first place. I have a bunch of clients who keep their quotes, invoices, etc all in Excel and those things need to look professional when they go out to clients.
- beand1p, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1agree. The Insurance company I work for uses Notes for their e-mail, database storage, web services, java, the works. I don't see that changing...at least in the near future.
- dwtc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1We use 6. Does 8.5 give you a good way to search for e-mails and email addresses? Does it use Windows standard keyboard shortcuts and interface design? Is there a way to mark a message as read/unread besides using the [Ins] key? I have high hopes for 8.5, for the day that the company finally decides to take the plunge. I hope it lives up to it all.
- BlindAcreMedia, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1ah Google, So reliable and easy to search with!
- Chewie67, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I haven't researched Exchange Online, but isn't it the same as Google Apps?
You're either trusting Google, or you're trusting Microsoft.
That's like a choice between Hitler and Mussolini. - ldavid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1All of IBM Corporation still use Lotus Notes...
- sodoh, on 07/15/2009, -0/+18.5 has type ahead with "Common contacts" stored. So if you have 14 John Smiths in the company it will know which one you normally talk.
I am not sure what you mean by search for emails easier. This is all dependent on how your company deploys it, but it does have a context aware search bar now and uses google type searches instead of notes type.
You can also bookmark emails and type in the search and it pops up straight away. You can also see mail thread or right click the email and find related documents in relation to the sender.
The mail file is basically an application under notes. So the default one uses new "internet standard" which peeved a lot of the died hard lotus fans.
The client is now built on Eclipse as well. You can also play with the trial version for free. - martalli, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1 Evolution can do a general email search...are you sure that Thunderbird can't??
