- kripkenstein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I am from Israel. The 'www.israelnn.com' site, "Israel National News", is run by "Arutz Sheva", which is a somewhat suspect source of information. They are run by and for the radical religious right-wing. Which is not to say they are lying here, but until we have some confirmation, just consider that most Israelis do not particularly trust this news source.
- chime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What about the Indians? There was a Slashdot article about it today.
Anyone who says these countries should not care about satellite photos, tell me why does Google hide major US buildings then? If Google can make the Capitol Building and White House appear white and indistinguishable, there is absolutely nothing wrong with other countries demanding the same.
And yes, terrorists can get access to all of this by other means. But that doesn't mean other countries shouldn't demand their govt. buildings be viewable by anyone with a web browser. At the least it deters Joe-Schmoe drunk-tresspassing-shooting-sprees. - ionix18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jkfan. Your logic is flawed. This is from a readily available database of commercial sattelite/airplane pictures. We are not talking about classified informations here. They don't need to go to Iran, just to the commercial supplier or a reseller. The data are already freely available if you have enough money. And enough money is not in the 7 digits figures...
- thoughtless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is US law that sensitive israel images must be degraded. Only Israel is given this consideration and it was because of their secret nuclear facilities that we gave it to em.
Heres a relavant quote from another article about google earth:
"But a number of security restrictions apply to those companies. For instance, U.S. law requires that images of Israel shot by U.S.-licensed commercial satellites be made available only at a relatively low resolution. Also, the companies' operating licenses allow the U.S. government to put any area off limits in the interests of national security. A 24-hour delay is mandated for images of especially high resolution. "

Lol. Oh, because of course, it was "morally right" to hijack Palestine and give the land to the jews. I mean, the holocaust is the middle east's fault, not Hitler right? Who cares if muslims suffer? Europe makes stupid mistake, United Nation along U.S. "decides" to hijack Palestine and give it to the jews.
This isn't about being anti-jew or pro-jew or left or right. It's about stupid ***** common sense. If someone kicked you out of your house and left you without food or water in your own backyard, and casually lived in your home like kings, you-would-be-as-equally-pissed-off.
Don't give me that 5000 years crap. What if I brought you some crappy legit document that said my ancestor used to live in your neighborhood? Does that give me the right to kick you out and live there?
My god. Sometimes I wish Jesus/Allah/etc would show up on Earth, just so that they'd laugh at all you imbecile.
back to the main topic. They can limit Google Earth all they want, as another digger posted earlier, all you need is a high-end GPS device. - ionix18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For your info, the whitehouse and the capitol and not altered not at a lower resolution on google earth. It seems to be that way on google maps though. So your point is not valid chime.
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If Israel or ANY entity(government, company, etc) has something it wishes to remain hidden then it should hide it themselves. The terrorists are going to be able to get whatever they want from the Iranians, so it's a wasted effort in this case.
I don't want to see fear, money or intimidation take priority over openness. - avonej, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is bad news... more governments are going to be bitching at Google to bend over backwards to hide "secrets" they built on the surface of the Earth. Great.
- lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about my sensitive military installations!!! Were is my protection!
- FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Google obtains its satellite imagery through commercial means, just as anyone with money can. Now, all of a sudden, they're guilty of revealing military secrets?
Perhaps Israel should take up their issue with the satellite company which flew their bird overhead snapping high-resolution pictures. Is that against any law or international agreement? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If everyone wore tin foil hats the glare should prevent the satellite pictures.
- tigerpaper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Chime's got a point. The average disgruntled maniac could exploit stuff like this somewhat. I don't see this censorship showing any favoritism towards Israel really at all. ...You have to think of how many disgruntled maniacs there are in that mess right now
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come one guys. Everyone knows that the average terrorist just needs a gps receiver and a mortar/rocket launcher and the can do some very accurarte damage. Terrorists aren't stupid they use things like google earth to get gps readings for targets. I agree with israel not wanting accurate map data to fall into its enemies hands.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it is pretty interesting that the only place against us law to photgraph at greater than 2m resolutions is Isreal. Actually been a law quite sometime now. Mainly due to the dont ask dont tell policy on isreals nuclear weapon program. Everyone and there mother knows they have nuclear weapons and alot of them, so all this is kinda mute
I dont know about you but doesnt news like this make you wanna drag out google earth and see what the big deal is?
they really ought to learn from the russians and put up fake stuff... fake mock up nuclear reactors and such.
Next question does the nsa or google know what you are looking at? Will they break down my door if i scan isreal too much?
Can i request google take better images of my house? you can barely freakin see it. - VoiceOfReason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2tubjay, I don't want to drive Israel into the sea, but I would like to drive their army of lobbyists out of the US Government. And I wouldn't mind if they'd stop seizing Palestinian land, building illegal settlements, and generally screwing the Palestinian population. Call me old-fashioned.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was looking at Google Earth yesterday and one of the bases I was stationed at in Iraq. I can't believe you can plainly see so many different things. I saw my my tent, my future trailer city being built, the PX, MWR, The hospital, the old chow hall, the softball field, laundry, everything! Even the location that we stored our most sensitive ammo, like frag grenades, AT4's, and tow missiles. Any of the TCN's that worked on base could easily confirm what was what on the satellite images. Personally I think the whole base should be blurred out, or satellite images of these things should not be taken in the first place. Now the Iraqi's know the exact grid coordinate for just about anything they wanna hit with a mortar. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the distance and direction between two grid coordinates, all soldiers are taught this. I'm disappointed at how easy it was for them to kill me and my troops.
Don't get me wrong, I love Google Earth and spent hours looking at my own house and places I've been and thinking how cool and useful it is. But I think it's a valid claim for anyone to want their info kept private. Anything that might be remotely sensitive should be non-existent without any label by default. Military and Government targets are always sensitive. - bigbooger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Using a remote controlled airplane and a small wireless camera, I could get the same results, if not better. :D
- sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Roman Catholic Church apologized for the Crusades. In the US, there's been legislation (don't remember if it ever passed) to apologize to Native Americans for how they were mistreated. Germany later apologized for WWII. Yet Britain has never apologized to India, nor have they and their allies apologized to Palestinians for partitioning their land to recreate an Israeli state.
Don't take this as anti-Semitic (especially since the Palestinians are Semites also). I don't believe the Palestinians should be carrying out bombings against innocent, unarmed civilians. I just feel that the way the middle east was restructured after the second war should leave a sour taste in everyone's mouth, and it's the reason there is so much animosity coming from the region towards western cultures. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This just opens the doors for everyone and their mother to complain to Google, and have their business, house, school, whatever, removed from Google maps or shown in low res. They have crossed a line, and there might not be any going back.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firstly, this hasn't been reported in the major news agencies, i don't trust the source-not until we get confirmation from Google themselves. This is sort of like M$ buying Opera. Secondly, billdcat, it doesn't matter what people think. "Facts" are irrelevant in the holy land.
The way i see it, the only way that there will be peace in the holy land is if both sides lose badly. The militants aren't going to stop attacking because Israel won't let economic activity go on and let them move freely. And Israel won't let them move freely because they're afraid of attacks. It's a vicious circle, with both side hating and not trusting each other.
You can be that in a number of years, if Sharon gets his way, he's going to try to "dump" the israeli arabs, who are growing at a phenomenol rate. If you remember Israel is nominally a "jewish state"- well you can't have that with the majority as Arab muslims can you?
The rivers of blood shall flow in the holy land, both sides are ***** up. - billdcat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Israel is a friend and ally of the US because they have common values: democracy, freedom, individual rights, capitalism, etc. That's why the Arabs call Israel the "little Satan" - the Arabs consider the US the "big" Satan, and they view Israel as an outpost of America, of sorts (based on common values).
As the leader of freedom, democracy, etc., we have a moral obligation to support fledgling countries that have the same values. It is, in fact, in our own interest to do so.
More than that, though, Israel is also a military asset to the US - their location, and excellent intelligence gathering, has provern invaluable to the US. And it's that close relationship between the US and Israel militarily that is probably at the root of Google's action. In other words, it's about protecting *US* interests, which just happen to be in Israel at this moment. - wildman082, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They already block out the white house and other US government buildings so this isn't really a big deal.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"For instance, go to baghdad iraq and you can go count the big blips they're putting into the sky there, or the number of tanks on that day."
All those images are at least three years old. There are no photos above Iraq from after the war, because none of the bases we have set up there are in any of the pictures. - PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ouch, you can see us! Damn, every one can see us! What now?"
Blame google.. lol. Do they think other countries doesn't have satellites? The terrorists simply go there, take a few shots by a digital camera.. and there they go.
It's pathetic :C - bigjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kripkenstein: I'm also from Israel and Arutz Sheva is the only news source actually reporting about the truth of what is going on in Israel.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1owned.
- thinkpaddude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0fuk google
- SethX9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The data are already freely available if you have enough money." .... uummmmm
And Bromskloss has it right. If there's some big military secret why is it out in the open for anyone with altitude to see? There are something like 500+ operational satellites orbiting the earth. And Google is getting its data from readily available resources and merely making those images available. Why aren't the Israelis going after the providers of those images? I call *****. - Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google has just opened a door that'll be hard to close now!
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is so silly! If they have things they want to keep secret, they should _hide_ them, not ask everyone else not to look there. Pfsst.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google ignores complaints from India, South Korea, etc., but when Israel makes a demand, it must be obeyed!
Shame on you, Google. - Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An estimated 95% of all intelligence is gathered from open sources. If you're going to talk about intelligence issues, at least have a clue about them.
It's not an end all solution. They just want to hamper the exploitation of current geospatial information. - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't this let their enimies know exactly where they are? And isn't this data readily available to anyone? I Just find it a little stupid because Google isn't exactly a military company and they got access to the same images.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lame. Israel should take it upon themselves to hide what they want. Not bitch at google for taking pictures of secret *****. It's no so ***** secret when a satallite can see it, now is it. FIGURE IT OUT ISRAEL.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, blurring out or forcing low-res surrounded by high-res would probably be suspicious, and people would know what it is anyways. But at least they would be forced to stick with their current random methods of shooting and just hoping they hit something. Knowing the exact coordinates of a chow hall with hundreds of soldiers in it is bad, but knowing that it's somehwere in that big blurry 20km square is at least better.
- sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SirDreamAlot: I don't think the Bible should have any relevance. Also, Israel was never conquered by the British Empire. The Ottoman Empire, which had sided with Germany during the first World War, was broken up, forming Turkey and other states that fell under the control of the League of Nations. France got Syria, Britain got Palestine, etc. And a "democratic" decision made by other nations on your behalf isn't democracy.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem lies not with our current ability to take awesome satellite pics and make them available to everyone....
...The real problem lies with the fact that so many people on the planet, many of whom are parts of governments or their 'military' (trained-killer) organizations, ...are so full of hate, murderous intent, and imperialistic/fascistic goals, wanting to impose their own ideas upon everyone else.
I am reading here about people who want to conceal the fact that they and their government 'handlers' are hiding bombs and bullets and grenades, which they ultimately intend to use to kill other human beings.
(I don't care if they are hiding them in Israel or Iraq or New Mexico, Iran, or Timbuktu....they are still murderous bastards, anti-human-life in every sense.)
What a bunch of sickos!
I hope Google continues to show ALL, and MORE, to EVERYONE.
Can you blame photographers, or photo-publishers such as Google, becase some folks have stuff they want to hide, so they could keep killing and manipulating people-- while pretending to be other than monstrous?
('we' kill only poor people, by the way...hiring and training only the most ignorant and immature, the young, the poor, to become the killing machines (military a**holes) ...
And 'we' say it is in the name of freedom, justice, democracy, religion, or we list other platitudes to hide our immature, evil intentions and actions!
It is nothing new. The rich have always killed and manipulated the poor, keeping them fighting each other...
NOTHING NEW! AT ALL!
It almost seems like the internet, and perhaps Google...may give Humanity a chance to bring all that out into the open.....but, to be sure, the internet is getting manipulated and censored, inasmuch as it can be controlled by money and those who are motivated by excessive profit.
So, maybe that was quite a segue, from
....Google censoring satellite photos of Israel...
...all the way to ...
...WHY we like file sharing so much, why we don't like the strong arm tactics of the **AAs, and why we want to stay FREE!
I wish some scientist could cause an alteration of the very elements on earth, or the laws of physics, so that immediately, ALL explosive devices would immediately detonate, wherever they are. (excepting those used in construction or mining applications)
Wouldn't that be nice!
So many A**holes would just be GONE!
Then the good people of the world could live in peace, forgetting all those racist, divisive, contentious, crappy ideas --such as white/black, Jew, Arab, Christian, Muslim, American, non-American, etc.
I go on record as saying F**k all that!
HUMANITY is the thing! - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This low rez thing is just crazy.
So I'm an attacker. I'm going to preform a military operation against a strong point with month old, year old sat information. From an Untrustworthy source!
No I'm not bashing Google but If your collecting information from public sources at the levels necessary to perform a type of military operation. Trust me people will notice. NSA, CIA, FBI and other un-fun people with three letter initials they got burned because of 9.11. They take things way to seriously these days. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"automagically"
That's interesting, as in my case, none of the bases that i or anyone I've known to have been stationed in Iraq has been shown. I wonder if they are updating with more recent information. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A little too late. Ironically, the pics are probably in googles cache still. But really, if the terrorists wanted these pics, they have gotten them already. Even using google earth. Unless they are really really lazy terrorists.
- bigmrjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was cool but I was looking at area 51 just now... :)
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@sethx9 -
Its not about the people who make the satalite imagery available because you really do need $$$$. They are targeting google because ITS FREE! Available to ANYBODY to download. Thats why google in particular shouldn't have military stuff on there. - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, the world is safer now. Cause we all know without satellite photos there's no way in hell that anyone could target any internal Israel targets (that's sarcasm for all you fundie morons).
- GunDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if some stupid enemy just looks for the areas blocked out and then targets those. Are the blockers going then ask to block "random" areas, to hide in the noise?
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reading and laughing
- alopindat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nothing like google to bring out all the antisemites... gotta love it.
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL Google has to follow what government says if they wanna do business in any country
- Mousse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeez, another digressive flame war.
Funkytaco: That might not have been too eloquent, but I have to agree. Some people are just inherently stupid. - markhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm. Lo Res area surrounded by Hi Res. Wouldn't that make the area much more suspicious and more likely to be scruitinized (targeted)?
