- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's more than just optimising html, but it's less than seo people pretend.
Essentially it's keyword research, optimising the copy (writing) on your pages, structuring your site so that other pages on it reinforce the relationship between somepage.html and specific keywords and phrases, and getting/keeping quality links. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Go read I, Robot... it was meant as a joke
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with "monopolizing" a market. It's abusing your monopoly powers that gets you in trouble. Second, companies don't take control over things. People let companies take control over things. Third, exactly what would suing Google accomplish? What would google be sued for? Having the best product or service on the market?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@tvnews: Do you not think companies would be pretty pissed of to find the SEO company they hired for $$$$$ was leaking their secrets to Google so they could patch up their algorithm and stop their sites from ranking.
- bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, they bought them because Performics is owned by DoubleClick and is also a major affiliate technology company, something Google can roll into Adwords PPA. As for the SEO and SEM divisions, I seriously doubt this company is about 'gaming' Google, being that they have major clients, some of which are Google partners. The conflict of interest however, is massive.
- BlackOp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5wtf does seo mean?
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Search Engine Optimization - basically helping sites score higher on Google than sites that actually deserve those rankings
- MrCalifornia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's still a pretty big conflict of interest since the google search algorithm is proprietary.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Go leave your FUD somewhere else, spammer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** google. when is everyone going to get the point that by supporting them youre aiding and abetting big brother and the enemy
- sentersoftech, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1been a pleasure to read... I agree with all of the aboves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is what will probably happen, if the SEO company isn't just disbanded and the employees shifted to other projects. Google will use the SEO company to help some of it's larger clients and partners optimize their websites so that their pages will be crawled more easily, which is basically something any other competent SEO could do. It's a bit far fetched to think that Google would risk their reputation with giving certain companies an "edge" on the natural search results.
Remember the deal with AOL? They got hands on help from Google with making their web properties more accessible to Google's spiders, but no "special" love. - mugile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4SEO = Search Engine Optimization.

- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yes, thanks for summarizing the article.
and google itself has referred to SEO as gaming its system. i don't think it is, unless we're talking about black hat techniques, but my point is that google might think of the company as one which games its system, so it wants to swallow it. - quakenul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Assuming that Google is indeed not evil, I would find it very logical to look into how Performics tries to manipulate search results and alter their algorithm accordingly.
- ChrisWebPub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Performics isn't an SEO company. Why do people think this?
For years and years they have been an affiliate program network like linkshare.com, or cj.com. Their client list is a list of people from their affiliate network, not people they do SEO for. According to their own website they started offering organic SEO services 8 days ago:

Yoda says, "Not done, research was. Burying, this story deserves." - Narrator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh you guys know that the way to get to the top of every Google results page is to put the following in your page headers:
Ooops dig html filter must have removed it.. Sorry - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@IEatHamburgers
the term seo is meant to mean people who will help get your website so it can be optimally searched and indexed by search engines as in making sure the code is clean and that Google can understand the layout of the site. Hoping to get their site ranked were it should be.
But what it has turned it to is people spamming their links on every ones web page hoping it will rank them higher as in people singing up in forums just so they can put the url on another web page. or people posting comments that just have their url in it.
What i am trying to say is there are legit SEO but the ones you always here about are the idiots that try to raise their web site higher than it should be. - Lionstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, that's the same motto as the returning anti-christ.

http://www.dogpile.com - slickrocktrail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that the performics affiliate business is much larger and more significant than the SEO side of their business. Competitive affiliate companies, Linkshare and Commission Junction are huge and a significant amount of all online merchant web purchase are made through either Linkshare and Commission Junction related affiliates. I was at a meeting for CJ and they said the number. It was high, but i forgot.
performics is a good buy for google because the affiliate business is booming, but performics sucks. google can hopefully improve their affiliate program. - marketnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I suspect that Google will keep Performics, but might consider “rebranding” them from calling it a Search Engine Marketing company, to another form of advertising. Or they might just leave it as-is. As far as ethics goes and Google owning a Search Engine Marketing firm, you need to consider that both Yahoo! and MSN have “search engine marketing” employees.
- rushoffailure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I find it hard to believe that Google wouldn't either 1) shut them the f down completely, or 2) use what they know to make Google's search engine more immune to their techniques.
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2just because a company was purchased doesn't necessarily mean that the purchased company will continue to do the same stuff they were previously doing. it'll probably be similar, but they could put SEO people to work on something like improving the google algorithm.
or, google might've bought them because they don't like people trying to game their system and wanted them off the market.
we can play the speculation game all day. - Parrotheader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of you are reading too much into this. Those aren't black helicopters circling above. They were simply a subsidiary company of a much larger strategic purpose. I have a feeling a lot of the Performics people will soon be looking for jobs elsewhere (although there's some affiliate marketing areas which they could keep without any major sense of conflict.) Maybe some might be reassigned to other areas within Google. Or maybe they'll sell that segment of the company off outright. Who knows right now. I doubt even the folks at Performics know for sure.
And not all SEO is 'evil' or bad. Just ask Matt Cutts (one of the guys who heads up Google's quality team.) It's his team's job to make sure spam stays out of the results. But at the same time, Google is realistic and knows sites will want exposure. This is why Google provides tools and guidelines in areas like Webmaster Central to try to help sites ethically maximize their exposure in Google. Heck, Matt's even co-hosted the Daily Searchcast before (a daily podcast on SEO topics.) He even posts on Digg occasionally so maybe he'll chime in. - billdana, on 08/15/2008, -0/+0Google is do logical and that why stepping like this to get more improvement in its algorithm...
http://www.seo-1-marketing-services.com - seoimage, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Great, our competitors are now Google, wonder if they will figure out how to rank their clients better?
:) - akaeding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am constantly amazed at how much debate there is on these kinds of things. Google is a business...one that excels at capitolizing on ideas presented at every level of the company...(whiteboards in the hallways from people to jot down thoughts, or expand on other ones). To think that they would simply ignore the fact that they have aquired a SEO firm and not take any and all information from that firm...and use it to in some way provide them a benefit...is naive to the extreme. Again...Google is a business...and business are there to make money...that's it...there is no good and no evil...there is only money...and they have lots. (lucky bastards)
- kmvtech, on 10/31/2009, -0/+0Now Google becomes the dictionary word that is synonym of search!
- pbs11, on 09/17/2009, -0/+0That's quite unfair, Google. You're undermining the leverage of independent and legitimate seo services companies like RankPay - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rankpay
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0Do you know that Google, Yahoo, and many other search engine companies hire SEO engineers? Why? Because they are familiar with their algorithms. They can help to make Google search better. One example of SEO company is http://www.alwutech.com/en/

http://chats.dll3.cc/sitemap/ - tvnews, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Just cause google owns an SEO company it doesn't mean that every link will become a sponsored link. The SEO company can simply help with ensuring a website's code is clean, easy to navigate for the search engines and help promote it so it gets more people to link to it.
It does not mean that google will change its algorithms to favor sites that use that SEO company.
If anything it will allow Google to see some of the tricks that a top SEO company uses and adjust its algorithm accordingly to prevent these tricks having an unwanted effect. - Kawauso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@fkr3 :
It's a spin on the famous Three Laws of Robotics - Daarh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0News looking some сorrectly, but I thing all AdSense, AdWords and DoubleClick be won for this deal. I waiting than it will be end.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I see your point now. But it does look like the kind of crap google fans write in all seriousness.
lol. - everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Google's monopolizing the bloody market, it doesn't seem fair one bit. They have basically taken control over what we can, and can not advertise on the web. It's ridiculous, I hope they get sued up the wazoo in near future....
- BlackOp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2bury this
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Google acts in it's own interest regardless of #1 and #2 all the time.
Especially #2.
Who made up that rule anyway? Some kid who thinks Google is doing it all for the users?? - geekme, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Doesn't that seem a little to close for comfort? Remember Googles algorithms are proprietary and closely guarded. How can anyone know they arn't promoting sites simply because someone paid them to do so?
With a system like Tall Street where everyone gets a say in the search results, the only trick to getting a higher ranking is to serve your USERS better. Not the search engine. Doesn't that seem fairer?
