- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -29/+178All they did was move the options from under the text box to the top of the page? Or am I missing something?

YouTube & Google Video pretty much consist of 90% of all videos on the web, and any video (excluding pornography) can be found on one of the two so it doesn't matter.
Plus Google payed 1.65 B for YouTube and they aren't going to let it go to waste.
Only smart move on their part.
And what's with all of this anti-Googleism going on? They don't "spy" on you. Prove it and you can sue them for many MANY millions, even BILLIONS. - DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -24/+85Instead of linking to blogspam, maybe you should, uh, link to Google?
- illahtech, on 10/11/2007, -3/+44"Instead of linking to blogspam, maybe you should, uh, link to Google?"
Um, a link to Google would provide what? Let's see, 5-10 pages worth of info detailing the changes or, "Hey, search around 100 times and see if you can spot the differences!"
Yeah...that would be far more useful.
Search Engine Land is one of the top sources for search related news, with interviews and info direct from the top players in the industry. It easily beats any established media like Business Week and whatnot when it comes to search and emerging media.
And to 'sensibledriver' down below...
"Linked article = spam...buried as such."
What?!? Everything on Digg is a link to something, what should it link to if not articles on other websites? - dannysullivan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+44@fkr3, Google Universal Search is under-the-hood changes on how they are assembling results. You'll see some of this when they display video content, news content and so on within search results. The screenshots in my article give you a more before-and-after look of what to expect.
In addition to this, they also rolled out entirely separate navigational changes, links up in the top left of the page and so on. This is a guide to that:
http://searchengineland.com/070516-144844.php
@DeathBorn, not sure if you were calling my article blogspam or referring to something else. If it was my article, uh, no. You can't link to Google on this because it's brand new. They have no help info up. It was all presented today, and what you see is a result of a briefing I had with them about the changes. Google typically doesn't do briefings with blog spammers :) - firewars, on 10/11/2007, -2/+40http://www.google.com/experimental/
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/11/2007, -11/+48I thought something looked odd... It's a welcome change though, after all shouldn't the biggest company on the Web have a design less than three years old?
The whole "iGoogle" thing is stupid though. I liked Personalized Homepage better. - Crumbeast, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26No, it's really not that powerful. google works fine.
- Casedot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22how is putting an "i" in front of something trademark infingement? They are just cashing in on the attention that apple fanboys give to the obligatory "i".
Apple didn't trademark the letter "i", although i bet they filed for it... - dannysullivan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22@MikeWanDo, sorry the aritcle was so disappointing. It really does document the substantial under-the-hood change that Google is doing. Next time I talk with them, I'll pass along the feedback that all they've done is move things around on the the page. All that ranking internally of different data sources and blending, just a big waste of time.
Seriously, it is a substantial change -- the biggest they've ever done, but for an end user, it may very well seem just as you put it, that OneBox displays have simply moved to other places. But they say (and they say in the story) that this is what their user testing shows works. - Pharoah6905, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20since i dont see any screenshots of the new main page here they are for those of you who cant see it for one reason or another

If it ain't broke, you ain't trying hard enough. - abjam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The coolest part of the new updates is definitely the ability to call people from the internet (kinda). When you search on google maps and find a business, you give em your phone number and it calls you, then calls them. A great opportunity for pranks though, set someone up with a random store hundreds of miles away and neither of them know why they are talking to each other :D Gotta watch out though Google, there might be some fraud issues with this too (set up a pay per minute line and call from Google).
- dannysullivan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It is only on Google.com for those searching in English, and even there, it might take a few days to rollout for everyone.
- dzorz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is really awesome. Need to know something about history - try this searches:
http://www.google.com/views?q=balkan+war+view:map&sa=N&ct=map
http://www.google.com/views?q=bosnia+war+view:map&sa=N&ct=map
I can't believe noone saw this earlier... - DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12Maybe if you stopped making useless posts, everything wouldn't be dugg down.
- stmiller, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I like this one (not new, but shows google has sense of humor):
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=new+york,+ny&daddr=paris,+france&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.977057,59.677734&ie=UTF8&z=3&om=1
or tinyurl:
http://tinyurl.com/363f4t - MScrip, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The new white tool bar at the top look dumb above my Google theme.
- centinall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It would be really useful if one could select which links they want displayed in the toolbar. And from any google web-page, not just the default search page. For instance, I rarely use images or videos, but often use notes and documents. And I guess, it also depends on which google app I'm using. I'm more likely to go from gmail to picasa, than google search to picasa.
But I understand from the article that this is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Still, it would me nice. - dannysullivan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5that's part of the interface changes. see here:

Stop with these blending jokes! - lipa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2l love it....
how ever, for some reason this is not up on www.google.com.au =( - rptcalyptos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I like it!
- franksands, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Can we stop with the 2.0 stuff, please? web 2.0 is already bad enough, let's stop this for pete's sake.
- psilanthropist, on 10/11/2007, -11/+13it isnt anything new. just use http://searchmash.com - google's search engine sandbox.
- veza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2try http://www.google.com/ncr ( i will not use the Language-"direction")
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5@psilanthropist
Not sure why you're getting dugg down. It clearly says at
http://www.searchmash.com/about/privacy.html that SearchMash is owned by Google. - jm1234567890, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not on the international sites yet.. :(
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yup, this is more interesting though : http://phillmidwinter.wordpress.com/2007/05/17/google-copied-my-ideas/ , the new experimental search features
- impedance101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yay!! Finally the Google Translate link is on the front page!!!!!!!
- diggguru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1saved a lot of "clicking time". But when I go to some links ,like finance or orkut, I dont see those "UNIVERSAL" links anymore
- Hoov, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I concur. It completely throws off the masthead.
- kingofpenguins, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Bug: The "More" menu at the top doesn't work in Konqueror (and Safari?)
Should I report this, or are they aware of problem?
it used to work in the old layout. - dotspace, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Not digging the new Google page. It takes more time to click on the option in the upper left-hand part of the screen than it did when the options were under the logo. Does anyone have a link to the code for the old Google page?
- weiran, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Still very poor markup. Really Google, how hard is it to make your site accessable?
- offwhite, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1His comments are childish like some of the comments are stating. Apple does not want to push DRM. They have to live with it just like we do until the record companies all loosen up. And slamming them about the MPAA suing customers is misplaced.
The guy has a chip on his shoulder. While it sucks that Apple would dis-invite someone, it is understandable that they want to present a consistent vision for their platform. That is the attraction using a Mac. At the same time is it the major weakness of Linux. It is hard to find the same end to end support or a computer running Linux. What happens when Apple integrates XGL? Will this guy's Linux desktop still be cooler than the Mac? - diegocg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Uh, no. The results page *has* changed. In google.com - in other countries like google.es it's still the same. The "experimental" search project is *another* new feature
- xabstract, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6Google, you can do whatever you want. I trust you.
- Vinvin, on 10/11/2007, -13/+11Sounds cool to me - now I don't need to click the "Images" link if I want to find an image, as it'll be in my text search results :D
- Me1on, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1This might be a little offtopic, but for some reason Google looks different than normal on my computer: http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/8758/sshotat5.png
Anybody else notice this? - TimDigg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Probably not a good idea to look to Google though
I doubt their servers could handle the digg effect
just in case anyone is that ***** dense....."/sarcasm" - adambenayoun, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Google are known for testing their features on their users, sometimes it is on a small scale and sometime on a wider audience.
it's known that a single link on their frontpage would bring millions of clicks per month, putting a small tab with most of their features and branding it under google is a smart move, that will generate them more clicks which means more revenue in the short term and a better brand in the long term. - jockser, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2i must be blind... but google looks like google
- EndersGame, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1@fkr3 "All they did was move the options from under the text box to the top of the page? Or am I missing something?"
They also added giant red arrows that point out which search results are not porn. - cargs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Someone did: http://onetimeline.com/timeline?query=Winston+Churchill
- taboam, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3All of youre search results are belong to us
- alohafound, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0it seams yahoo china has that plan before google. you can visit www.yisou.com and try some research and see the answers.
yahoo changed the horizontal result navigation tabs into vertial tab pages in vivid design and add music research, video, map... and all such related contents in one page.
THE BIGGEST HINDRANCE is you will get more what you want. the bloated page crammed with ads. - boldfire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0I see it on .com but not .co.uk - any ETA for the local upgrade? Also is images + such being upgraded to this new style?
