- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Hopefully they won't "randomly" close your account and steal your money like PayPal does.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30It's not like paypal because it doesn't suck...
...hopefully - heresy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I was hoping they would compete directly with PayPal. PayPal is a terribly dishonest company. They lock accounts and confiscate money and the customer is left with no recourse.
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Or not let you remove your credit card. Or let people abuse the chargeback system. Or give people who have been scammed the shaft and not bother pursuing the money that was stolen. Or have incompetent staff.
...There's probably more that I can't think of right now. It's 2:00 am. Cut me some slack. - kurrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6whether it's google or whoever, i've been waiting for over 2 years for a new online payment gateway.
Paypal is by far, the worst company and consumer experience I have ever experienced. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, no details - What's there to report?
- MaxTheSheep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Or not let you remove your credit card.
Happened to me.
Or give people who have been scammed the shaft and not bother pursuing the money that was stolen.
Happened to me.
Or have incompetent staff.
Dealt with them for hours.
I say, go Google. Paypal is crap, but it is true that it is one of the only systems the internet has, if not the only, to make online purchases "safely". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The CC business is too mature and almost impossible for anyone to break in."
reminds me of Jenniffer Government- two massive corperations that own everything and are at war
(in this case 3, visa/mastercard/amex) - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"It makes no sense for us to go into businesses that are occupied by existing leaders"
Oh, we believe you, Eric. Just like your forays into email (led by Microsoft, Yahoo), spreadsheets (Microsoft), maps (MapQuest, it could be argued), IM (AOL, Microsoft), etc. Although, pretty much any business initiative that can be made ends up going into another market that has some sort of leader. Going into direct competition with PayPal or not, I think "GBuy" or whatever they end up calling it will be a good move, at least for consumers. Lord knows we need someone to force PayPal from its lazy throne. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The credit card companies are the ones providing the credit. They essentially loan you moan to pay the merchant for your purchase, without the hassle of going to the bank and filing forms and other junk. For this convenience you pay interest on the amount loaned to you.
You don't want a middle man? Pay cash (or check, same difference). Credit cards are offered as a convenience.
If you're not getting good service from your CC, SWITCH TO ANOTHER COMPANY. This isn't the cell industry; you can actually switch at any time without any extra fees. - waxorchard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12This article reveals nothing not already known...let's wait for details about the product.
- MrLobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I kind of agree with you but google will never try this. The CC business is too mature and almost impossible for anyone to break in.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's like but not legally like PayPal.
- yuckfou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gbay?
- tomduff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You've never had a Vonage account, eh?
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because Gmail is still lacking a lot of features (if you've ever designed HTML mail and viewed it on Gmail, you know what I'm talking about). As for the invites... One word: marketing.
- yuckfou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4GMail would be great if it weren't STILL beta! Why don't they offer anything to just anyone without a freaking "invite"?
- ashanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. A firefox extension.
2. A web API
3. Integration into Google Account architecture
4. Javascript
5. Global site adaption (think: adsense)
6. Secure AJAX (lol.? HTTPS?)
7. The One-click philosophy.
& what've you got? A payment system that you can manage with your Google Account, go to any website that's Google Buy'edable, click on the item you want, hit buy, and, within one click, accesses Google's servers over HTTPS AJAX? and you've just bought that new favorite somethingrather. - descalante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GMoney
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it's not like paypal I don't want it. I am sick of paypal's outrageous fee's. Someone like google needs to step up and give paypal some competition to drive down their prices.
- elephantdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I wouldn't mind a 2% cut, up to even a 5% cut for gbuy services, provided no chargebacks and extremely easy integration. The CCs are leeches on society, it's too bad they get %3 of every transaction and provide nothing. All the credit is actually extended by the store you buy goods from, the CCs have zero risk. So I kind of expect a good level of service, and they are not providing it. I hate to be a google fan, but it would be nice if they went into the banking and CC business as well just to get rid of the middleman.
- tomduff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, so let me get this straight...GBuy is going to help speed up checkout processes...which means it's going to be EXACTLY what Microsoft Wallet was (at least, from what I gather). If I'm right, this thing is going to turn into a whole new MS Passport system, or your "Google Account", with your credit card info attached to it...yawn.
I'm calling this one...Firefox extentions are going to come out of the woodwork, and theft will abound with phishing extentions, thereby hurting Mozilla's market share...and we're SURE google isn't in bed with M'soft? Hmmm...
*****. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The truth of the matter is, Google makes great products, but they just dont have enough customers for their products.
The only places they are leading are Google Search and Adsense (sp?). If you look at it, Gmail has less than 2% of the market share. Similar to most Google Products.
They make much better software. Gmail is much better in usability, form, and storage capacity compared to Yahoo or Hotmail, but the competetion had a huge headstart, and Google products dont get as much coverage as they could. - tomduff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now, before I start some kind of war here, let me clarify that I'd side with Google any day, especially over PayPal but this all seems rather fishy.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Google management is getting off on a technicality" in saying its purchasing system differs from PayPal, said RBC Capital Markets analyst Jordan Rohan. "A merchant-to-consumer payments system, that's close enough."
I don't understand. They haven't released the details yet. How can they justify posting unverified ***** assertions on the internet? Someone should pass a law regulating this sort of thing - zimm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gbuy: unlike paypal. we wont rob you blind and make you submit forms to get 10% of you cash back!
- yuckfou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@soogy
Marketing: verb, 1) to expose for sale in a market. 2)SELL (Merriam-Webster)
I've never seen Google selling Gmail accounts. Maybe you "market" your HTML emails, whatever. Gmail has been around for a long time now, yet anyone who hasn't been "invited" to Gmail has no access to quite a few Google services. It's stupid. - deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Goole owns the domain google.biz but they don't own gbuy.biz.
Check it out, it's even for sale ... http://www.gbuy.biz - wembley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It makes no sense for us to go into businesses that are occupied by existing leaders," he said.
Yeah, good thing Google never got into search, they would have had to go into business against already occupied leaders Yahoo and AltaVista.
PayPal isn't a leader... it's something that's put up with until a better alternative comes along. - mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good. PayPal sucks.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or rape your received payments for 5%.
- zedj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually previously when Gmail came out,I did not get invites from my friends so instead I went to the gmail page and subscribed to the gmail newsletter or something like that and the next day google sent me an invitation. Moreover now you can apply for a gmail account using your mobile phones.
- ANorton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When are we going to be able to go to gsale.com??
- veloscaper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@kurrent
then you must not get around much - Momoru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Drive down their prices? PayPal has some of the lowest cuts by far of any merchant account i've seen...and no monthly fees. The fee's they charge you for chargebacks are not profit, thats what they themselves get charged, and every other merchant service provider will charge you those same fees. It sucks, but blame the scamsters on that one, not the provider.
- samnmax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4"Hopefully they won't "randomly" close your account and steal your money like PayPal does."
Or "randomly" close your Adsense account and steal your money like Google does:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=3960 - paradoxic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1google gets more coverage then anyone else has on the web, ever. I disagree with your statement that they dop not get coverage.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3well see
- DonJuanMAC, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Google makes nice web apps, not the best. Adsense sucks!! SO many bogus offers it is ridiculous. There is money to be made though so it works. I just hate it, and see it for the exploit that it is on the web. This ad crap would be better if there was more legitimacy to it. Real verification or some sort of reasonable moderation of these useless ads.
- Colbs, on 10/12/2007, -15/+6Gpaper
Google toilet paper, but its NOTHING like Charmin.
We have 4 layers.
