- kday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28godaddy should fix their interface before they go public. The interface is EXTREMELY cluttered, and confusing to use. It obviously wasn't designed by a professional.
I do have a website hosted by godaddy because godaddy is cheap. However, cheap doesn't mean good. - asdren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14agreed the interface is horrible and I hate that 90% of the signup process is screens with upselling offers.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12spam posts makes the baby jesus cry
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8^ my thoughts exactly, i got a hosting account on there just because of all the 10% off codes though various podcasts and i wanted to see what a typical consumer's experience would be like, what a mess
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been a godaddy customer for years, have had no problems with their support (tech and billing), and don't mind the upsaleing. That's where their profit centers are and I won't begrudge them. Besides, they can easily be skipped as GoDaddy has been offering an express checkout option for quite a long time. The interface is a bit cluttered but there's a lot that they offer in terms of services. Small disclaimer, I use them for domain registration only as I provide my own hosting.
My concern with respect to them going public is that they will now be under immense pressure to maximize their profitability. I'm not sure what benefit the influx of cash will provide from the stock offering (haven't read the prospectus) but I've always liked their open philosphy of being accessible and supporting the "little guy." I'd hate to see them lose that because their shareholders didn't think it was profitable. Also, the thought of a hostile takeover from Verisign makes me nauseous. A public stock offering would make a scenario like that possible.
Still, going public is one of the rewards of building a successful company and if it will help to strengthen their position as an alternative to Verisign, then I'm all for it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hope going IPO means more GoDaddy Girl commercials
- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I switched from Godaddy to Dreamhost myself, and it had to be one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. They have a great custom control panel, not some cPanel you find everywhere else, and they offer free shell accounts with your hosting. You even get a free domain as long as you are hosted by them. I love it :D
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, hold on while I invest in one of the worst hosting services out there. Extra points for their continued use of incredibly obnoxious advertising.
- MephistoX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dreamhost is great.
That $97 you get for referals isnt bad either ;-D - WailOS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Had some horrible experiences with GoDaddy.com. Registered a few domains and bought hosting with them for 1yr. A few months later a complaint was written to GoDaddy.com by some j*ckass who was harassing me. They charged me an extra $20 "processing fee" because they received a letter in the mail.
As if it wasn't bad enough that GoDaddy charged a fee to my account without my consent, the $20 fee appeared on my statement twice -- Exact same item, charge number, etc. I told them so, and they blamed it on my bank. After many hours unsuccessfully trying to resolve the error on the phone with GoDaddy, I had the bank do an investigation and they found the second charge originated from GoDaddy. I paid the first charge but disputed the second charge with my bank.
Everything's ok for 2 months, and then, without any form of prior notice at all (no calls, no emails, nothing) they cancelled my hosting and reclaimed my domains. How's that for customer service, eh? Apparently they were mad that my bank charged the second $20 fee back to them, so they decided that they would breach the 1yr contract I had made with them. I called them up -- In order for me to have my domains returned to me, and to once again be able to access all of my data on their servers they not only wanted me to pay the erroneous second charge of $20, but they also wanted a $50 "processing fee."
Seriously, worst customer experience of my life. Absolutely unbelievable to me that any company would have the gall to try and demand that I pay for their errors. Any sensible company would realize the bad press they get for trying to screw someone over like that seriously outweighs whatever pittance of cash they might eke out from a person desperate to get their sites running again. Never doing business with them again. - themilkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gee, didnt see this one coming... sarcasm
grow a company and make it public... cash out and start another... its the american way!!! - knightcrawler75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea...the second coming of the tech bubble. And I would put 10 to 1 odds that they are raising the cash to go out and buy some of the smaller companies.
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Directnic / Dreamhost 4 ever.
However, I would consider buying GoDaddy stock right away and hold onto it for maybe a year or less (depending on its debut price on the market) - Xopl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Companies that are making money don't go public. Go Daddy must be strapped for cash. Probably not a good sign.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you could just use a po box for all your contact info for all your domains....
- naszaklasa, on 01/18/2009, -0/+1Used both Godaddy and DreamHost hosting.
GoDaddy is made for dummies.
DreamHost is slow. - wardrive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'll buy stock in it... i'll take the risk. Why not?
- deeperlink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, we all know they're cheap, but not cheapest ! This is very very bad company for normal customers. I had a lot complains, but since I used basic hosting several years,I decided to try a little better package from them. So, I upgraded all my sites, and now is even worse, sometimes it takes 3-4 minutes to bring to bring the page into browser. Yeah, mySQL is a big sales point for them, and now after 3 years of pain with customer service I can realize why - it's only for the commercials. They will never provide you decent service, maybe at 3-4 AM it will work somehow. So run people, run from godaddy. Their marketing is ***** but I don't care if the service is decent. This is not the case. They locked my admin account today 6th time !!!! I should mention that I'm using password reminder in my browser, and there is no chance to misspell user name or pass, no chance. Every time they locked me, they asking 2 hours phone talk with their totally unprofessional stuff. They even don't know where they are working and what to lie to people. If it's not enough to send them your account number, user name, password, mother's name, father's dog name, sister's favorite color and last 4 digits from cc, what they need to fix their s**t? They need to speak with me, to tell me after 2 hours of phone waiting how somebody tried to break into my account. Yeah, they can't check the ip address, noooooo. It's too hard for such a huge company to ask employees to look at IP address of the "attacker". If they look, it's gonna be the same, we know - it's gonna be mine IP address. So what is the problem with them ?
I know I should move, and I'm doing it right now, but someone needs to stop them. And this site is very good for that, thank you Digg for chance to complain. - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5DREAMHOST and NAMECHEAP ROCK!!!!!
- benthere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Their hosting and their domains are completely different experiences.
They're fine for domains. I mean, who needs support for domains?
But they really suck for hosting. I've had them a couple times when I got hosting thrown in with a domain and when my friend hosted with them when we were designing his site.
There are much better hosting options available. Domains are fine though. - Eronysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They monitor lookups and steal/squat domains internally
- findhostcoupons, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Wow! Interesting news! Good story man!
- benthere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DreamHost is much better than GoDaddy for hosting. I've had a couple hosting plans with Godaddy and currently have 5 domains hosted on DreamHost.
There really is no comparison between the two. GoDaddy's hosting is awful. - Eronysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just my past employment ;)

A good host that I've had for more than 2 years and has plans as low a $4 bucks a month is http://www.totalchoicehosting.com They just announced Ruby on Rails on all the accounts by May 1st also, so that's going to be great.
- Sushubh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2never used their hosting. but domain management is the best i have seen with godaddy.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Personally, I use Netfirms. $5/yr, no upselling, and they throw in some free (somewhat limited, but unexpected) hosting to boot. I considered Godaddy, but i've heard real nightmare stories about their support.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is it not already public? Also, I'd prefer to use www.1and1.com, bit cheaper and they offer undisclosed whois lookup if you want it, while godaddy charges an extra $2
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Seriously.. other than the obvious spam value, what's the point of this post? Oh, right, to generate traffic and sell more stuff! I call spam. No dig.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Most investors are going to look at the companys' success and potential future successes. I agree that their interface is ugly and cluttered, however, their success as a registrar is incredible. They pretty much changed the domain business into a low cost marketplace that has forced others companies like Network Solutions to lower prices and offer better products. I will continue to do business (domain registrations) with godaddy because they offer more for my money than other registrars. They don't seem nearly as evil as Network Solutions.
- mathie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't see this IPO fly very high. They are ambitious and have a good marketing department. We'll see...
- uncoolcentral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd rather spend more elsewhere than use godaddy. These days I'm largely using DomainContender, owned by Intercosmos, same people who own DirectNIC. Godaddy is a waste of my time and hurts my eyes. If they tossed me $100k/yr, I'd keep their interface and looks fresh, like my pits!
- Warnke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never used Go Daddy simply because they do not support registering .ca domain names.
- john117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They monitor lookups and steal/squat domains internally"
Do you have any proof, evidence, or documentation for this? Just curious. - NickyBatts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GoDaddy works fine for moi... the UI shouldn't even be an issue if your domains are setup properly... I mean, how often do you putz around with domains for Christ sakes?
That isn't something that should require a ton of setup...
P.S. - I don't host with them though... that would just be silly. - cynthiatanady85, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0Thanks 4 the info.. i've been waitin for this
- isosceles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0As a registrar they are a solid company. Their web based email is great for an ad-free web based email client. Not that I've tried others... it just works. Other than that, I would go elsewhere for hosting. Rimuhosting.com has blown me away in terms of service and price.
Years ago when GoDaddy was smaller the checkout process (and numerous emails) weren't as annoying. Now it's just out of hand. - eyesx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think Godaddy has excellent domain registration services. Webhosting by Dreamhost all the way.
- shawnh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Dreamhost is pretty cool, but it is still shared hosting nonetheless. So you are at the mercy of the processes running on your server and they do have some downtime. Their control panel sure beats any CPanel or out-of-the-box control panel, IMO. I've been a customer since April 98.
GoDaddy, on the other hand, used to be really fast it seemed. Now it seems they over subscribe their boxes.
Rackspace all the way. ;) - siliconglen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Hopefully they will be a bit more broadminded than Google, who like GoDaddy have customers and supporters all round the world. However, customers and supporters without American ID were denied the opportunity to invest in Google and I trust GoDaddy will be broad minded enough to accept that those of us in Europe might be interested in buying their stock as well. There is no legal impediment to this that I know of, I held shares in a NYSE listed company in the 1980s.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Don't forget about the thousands of resellers under the wildwestdomains name. All owned by the same company.
I'm a reseller myself at http://frugalname.com . I agree with many about the interface. I worked there, I resell, and even I get a bit lost with the navigation. For just domain registrations, You can't beat em/me - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2They have some ***** hosting. I'd avoid them.
- fullcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Try namecheap next time, its a little cheaper, and the control panel is really slick and simple
- handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -24/+6I hate godaddy, there control panel sucks, and if you have a popular site, they dont live up to there hosting plans
