http://digg.com/odd_stuff/GoDaddy_Silences_Police_ ... - shibbay, on 03/13/2008, -4/+15Wonder how soon he'll be able to move to a new domain registrar that doesn't limit free speech.
- dtele, on 03/13/2008, -1/+10So his hosting has been closed - he can still move to a new server (?)
- ezco506th, on 03/13/2008, -2/+10I call Shenanigans.
- chazizzle, on 03/13/2008, -0/+6This is on the front page now in hot in all.
- Abscon, on 03/13/2008, -1/+6Repost! Buried!
- joshywood, on 03/13/2008, -3/+7Being that GoDaddy is the #1 domain registrar in the world, a new precedent has certainly been set. Other registrars and hosting companies will follow if they're allowed to get away with this. Repost this story and Digg it up so we can protect the precious freedom of the internet. This is the beginning of a controlled and censored internet, what's next...taxes? Get the word out, before it's too late.
- PATSCRU, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3So it is ok for GoDaddy to be a free speech cop? How would you feel if they shut down Ann Coulter's website because they feel it is promoting hatespeech? Like you i disagree with what a lot of people say....Unlike you I know that free speech is a pillar of this country, and i would vigorously defend anyone's right to say anything they want, even if I am extremely opposed to their message.
- zimmbear, on 03/13/2008, -1/+4God, the same post twice on digg, in the same day! Jesus, how low have we dropped.
- foolawrence, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3that so funny, it conservatives who want give police all the power and no accountability, get rid of free speech, why you say lib
- sporb, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3web hosting with godaddy? i hope he used the diggnation promo code..
- Mjeacoma, on 03/13/2008, -0/+3I send them an email stating I will NEVER consider using their site ever again and this was the response
Thank you for contacting the Office of the President.
The situation with the Web site RateMyCop was absolutely NOT about censorship in ANY way.
The site's operator has publicly disclosed the concerns were over bandwidth. More accurately, Go Daddy's concerns were about how the RateMyCop site was far exceeding the amount of server usage for which it had contracted.
This customer paid for a shared server plan. The connections to his site were six times more than an entire 'shared server' accommodates. While he was paying for a service that cost $14.99 a month, his site actually required a much more extensive set-up.
Basically, he was paying for compact car, when he really needed a semi-truck.
The customer was not willing to work with our staff to resolve the issue.
While the "censorship" allegations certainly make for an edgy "story," they simply had nothing to do with this situation.

- Locke23, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2we know. -> the post is right there... on the tops...
*sigh* - dotlizard, on 03/13/2008, -1/+3of course -- but to shut down a site for suspicious reasons in the days after it gets national attention and news coverage which are priceless to an up & coming website? terribly damaging. even being down a day while you figure out where to go and whatnot, this is a site that was getting some mad pageviews and attention.
- Signa91, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2***** people, this story has been on the Top 10 all day. bury it!!!
- kovac9478, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2It's ok..... Rate My Poo is still up and fully functioning. That was a close one!
- eviljim, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I don't understand why you're getting dugg down for pointing out what is almost certainly the reason the site was disabled.
Oh wait, that's right, your version isn't sensationalist enough. Add in some hookers next time. - twitrock, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Good to see the site back up. Power to the people!
- UtahApocalyse, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Wow im transfering all my domains from godaddy they can go to hell
- loggia, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1This won't help GoDaddy much the next time some judge decides to order them to censor content. Why would they want to get involved in policing content (no pun intended)?
Bad move, GoDaddy. - synaesthesia, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Maybe one overseas.
- chrispix, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Whoops. I mean, I call Shenanigans for police officers arresting hookers, and the hookers went to write a report on the officers because they were pissed, thereby overloading the server, and the end result was GoDaddy halting their hosting service.
- oldcrows40, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1"Oh, it's called Rate Your DOC dot org. I'm on a completely different more awesome site. "
- Nerfdude, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1more like rate my dupe
- peterkay, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Is this not still on the top 10? I can understand a repost of a couple of years ago, heck maybe even 2 months ago... we all miss something every now and then... but 10 hours later and FP is just ridiculous!
- Bilabrin, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah but the firestorm surrounding this site is going to buoy it up regardless. Strangely enough, It doesn't seem to be working for me today.
- Plasmatica, on 03/13/2008, -1/+1Uhm...I can still view the ratemycop.com website.
- cornerback42, on 03/13/2008, -2/+2Funny how the justice system seeks to extinguish those seeking to out them over ***** practices... ***** *****..
- groovis77, on 03/13/2008, -0/+0Waaaa! I want my GoMommy!
- chrispix, on 03/13/2008, -2/+2I call Shenanigans for 90% of the sites on Digg that fail, and give an error message about not being able to respond because of load. They all must be hosted at Go Daddy, and under suspicious traffic.
You have a site that hits mainstream media one day and people start poking around getting more and more pageviews. Creating more and more connections, Right now there are 1400+ guest users farting around the site. Figure they stay for 10 minutes, and that is a solid number over 24hrs. That is 216,000 users per day. If they visit 4 pages (thats it) that is almost a million pageviews. They are using php, and probablay a MySQL backend. Each one of those page views creates at least one MySQL querey? No wonder they got suspended.
Also, this was not over domain registration, but virtual/shared hosting w/ godaddy. I would not use them for hosting. Go with someone else like theplanet.com - NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/13/2008, -3/+3Such pussies, I haven't heard of one public sector employee that feel the public has a right to evaluate their performance.
- stutimandal, on 03/13/2008, -2/+1Call your local candidate. Let him know that cops are acting high handed. If a few million Americans will make a call on this issue, there will be an action taken.
- foolawrence, on 03/13/2008, -5/+0that fine, police has public complaint process and oversight, very effective
- inactive, on 03/13/2008, -6/+1Good job Godaddy, don't let the Sean Bell loving Libs ruin your great name.
