- monkeycat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It's not laziness, its just plain more efficient to not have to move back and forth all the time.
- AoSimon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The Greasemonkey script for labelling emails without using a mouse was unknown to me though. Useful stuff.
- noelsusman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And why not? I don't see any reason why Gmail is not an E-mail client. Please explain this to me oh mighty one.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Dude, I don't think your computer is supposed to have bolts in it. You should look into that.
- sirwally, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It think it is more accurate to say that it is both. Last time I checked you can acccess your Gmail inbox using a traditional mail client via POP. The Gmail that people see and use everyday technically is just a web client to their mail servers.
- allenkt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not about being too lazy to use your mouse. There are some of us out there that simply can't use the mouse very much for other reasons. For instance if I use it too much my index finger, thumb and palm tend to go numb and hurt for awhile. Therefore I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts when I can.
- emostar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And he forgot a very nice "tip"
You can use "+" in your email address, for example user+bugtraq@gmail.com
Then create a filter that says anything to delivered to user+bugtraq@gmail.com will get the Bugtraq label automatically. It works great with mailing lists. - GarySwager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think part of the slowness is because of all these features that you like so much.
If I wanted all those features, I would use Outlook, or some other mail client. In fact, I do use Outlook for some of my mail. For day-to-day mail usage, however, gmail is perfect. It's fast, free, simple, supports labels and is accessible anywhere. I also rather like the searching inside mails, but I imagine yahoo supports that as well.
Using greasemonkey scripts, there really is no faster mail client for me than ie or firefox + gmail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Power tips? Yeah, uh huh..
Try this on for size:
Gmail on Home Linux Box using Postfix and Fetchmail
http://souptonuts.sourceforge.net/postfix_tutorial.html - spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny how you're comparing a free service to a paid service. Why not compare the free Yahoo service to Gmail?
Ummm... because the Yahoo free service is a disaster. I was a Yahoo user for years but was finally driven off by their constant ads and poor spam filtering.
I agree that Gmail's address book is sub-par, but I have hopes that they'll improve it. I've stop trying to put things in "folders" in gmail because it's just easier to search for what I'm looking for.
Just let it pour in and stop trying to categorize - that's what I do. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@garyswager: no, it doesn't always work, but generally when it won't work, the form won't accept the "+" sign in the first place, and will ask for a 'valid' email address. other than that, i haven't had any problems with it. i use it when i fill out webforms from sites i know i'm never going to want correspondance from. i just set my address as (myaddress)+spam@gmail.com, and make a filter that has any mail coming to that address skip my inbox and go straight to the trash. works like a charm.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hercules: i don't get what's so sub-par about gmail's contact list. when i go to send an email, the contact i'm trying to send it to usually comes up within the first 2 or 3 letters i type, whittled down out of a list of anyone i've previously corresponded with. what's so difficult about that?
and labels are under-used? wouldn't that have to do with the person using it? i use labels plenty, and find them to be way more effective than folders, since you can apply multiple labels to any given email and make different overlapping lists for different criteria. what benefit do you gain from folders over labels?
you have a point about the notes and calender functions, though google calender is coming out soon, and will undoubtedly interface with gmail. and as for notes, i just set up a filter to take any mail sent to (myaddress) notes@gmail.com, have it skip the inbox, and label it with notes. then i just send myself an email any time i want a new note. not only does this work within gmail, but i also have my notes address as a contact in my cell phone, and i just text myself a note any time i need to jot something down while i'm out. past the initial setup, which is relatively easy, it works flawlessly and simply. granted most people aren't going to think to do that, and a notes feature would be nice, but i hardly see it as being worth all the ***** that is yahoo!mail.
lastly, no, gmail doesn't sync up with my pda. but it does sync up with outlook, which syncs up with my pda.
i gladly sacrifice a little bit of initial setup time for a little extra efficiency and usability, a lot of speed, and no ads or spam. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's supposed to say "(myaddress)+notes@gmail.com", but the comment edit feature stripped out the plus sign for some reason.

- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37of7 he was obviously joking. Man, I wish people would read before flaming.
Eric Wilson - Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use the + all the time, it works, and it works really well.
I use it to make todo lists.
make a contact called todo, with youremail+todo@gmail.com
then make a filter anything addressed to youremail+todo@gmail.com goes to your todo list, skips the inbox, and is auto stared, you dump the star once you complete it.
Then anytime you want to add something to the list, type todo in your to box, it will auto find the right email address
put what you want in the subject/body and your set.
I do the same thing for Notes and Links, its very handy. - kmartshopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well mighty Gmail masters, perhaps you'd like to tell us how to really delete email from Gmail...
So much for being a master... and so much for my using Gmail. - spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nope, the keep a permanent copy anyway, you just cant see it anymore if you delete it.
- GarySwager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this actually work in every case? I'm a bit worried that in some cases entering a mail address with a + could result in those particular mails getting lost. I remember reading somewhere that not every mail server supports the +...stripping it out would send the emails in question to the wrong place.
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why do the other languages get no updates? I use the English (GB) but all the features are only on US.
- samstr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Its good to see someone collaborate all the shortcuts into a movie! Well done.

- cheshire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the most usefull article on gmail i have ever read. Great digg!
- emostar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7GMail is not an e-mail client. An e-mail client will support getting the e-mail from my own server via POP3/IMAP/Whatever protocol you use.
Perhaps you need to lookup wht Wikipedia has to say what an e-mail client is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_client - Hercules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Unfortunately, I really think Gmail *was* a great idea and now having used it for the better part of a year... I think it sucks.
Yahoo's email is MUCH better.. they are the only ones trying to give you a real desktop feel of email, as evidenced by their beta (which is by the way, unbearably slow even on a good PC). They have a calendar. Their contact lists are top notch. They have a 'notes' feature. You can sync the whole thing to a PDA. And when the beta is complete, and it works fast and furious as I expect it to, it will be seemingly the same as using Outlook, except you have your mail follow you everywhere you go.
Gmail has what? An ugly interface, labels instead of folders (which are nice, but very under-used), no calendar (yet), horrible contact management, with little signs of improvement. I admit however, they give it to you for free... but I paid for Yahoo because I feel I get treated as a 'customer' instead of just a 'user' -- and Yahoo's efforts in their mail product for customers has been top notch thus far. I am glad that I have a nice email address for both Yahoo and Gmail, so it makes life easier :) - prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This isn't a "power tip" and everyone here may already know it because we're all so damn elite, but one useful thing with gmail is you can create a label named "Unread" and gmail will automatically populate it with all your unread mail.
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I didn't know that, thanks!
- BigEasy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6What is with the aversion people have to switching their right hand between a mouse and keyboard? Really, I mean you already don't have to even stand up to use this little box of bolts we call a computer, do you really need to take this laziness to the next level? Grow a pair and wiggle your mouse!
- lachcorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah I don't know why that is, plus it seems all that changes is the layout of the buttons. Would it kill you to change to English (US)? I don't think you will end up writing colour without a u or anything :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I didn't know about the greasemonkey script - like it! :)
- zkirill, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5The article should compared gmail with other clients such as Microsoft Outlook/Thunderbird to persuade people to switch. What do you guys think?
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's kind of interesting. We measure efficiency by a couple of seconds, where a few years ago being behind by a few seconds wouldn't have mattered much. It still doesn't matter in most things... I guess it shows how much the internet is being used for work related things. When people are doing things for fun they take all the time they want doing it, now it's just more of a chore and finding the quickest way is the best.
- redlandmover, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5read, noelsusman's comment : no, because Gmail is totally different than Outlook and those programs.....
Those programs aren't actually an email service, but Gmail is an online email service.

- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4WTF are you talking about? First of all Hotmail has nothing to do with this. Second, Hotmail has virus protection at the same level or better than the other web based email sites.
