- erhysen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't have those settings, looks like it's coming soon.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no spamming, it says it'll be sent at max once every four days. so no pitting two email addresses in mortal combat :(
- lundman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2man vacation
HISTORY
The vacation command appeared in 4.3BSD.
Release date: 1986-06
Ugh - hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bad idea.
Autoresponders aren't a good idea anymore. Unless you want a handy way for your server to get on spamlists. Come to think of it, Gmail winds up on SpamCop's Block List with surprising regularity already.
this is quite true, but if you had the time to check out gmail and its new vacation responce you would see that it clearly states that it only sends emails to the people who email you that are in your contact list..... so this isn't an issue. - CritterNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bad idea.
Autoresponders aren't a good idea anymore. Unless you want a handy way for your server to get on spamlists. Come to think of it, Gmail winds up on SpamCop's Block List with surprising regularity already.
Simple reason. Spam/viruses use forged messages. Auto-responders respond to those messages, sending a message to someone that NEVER sent a message to the GMail account in the first place. So, to the recipient, it's spam.

Attempt to reserve your Diggs for something more important, so more important stories make it to RSS feed. - mathew_bug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems that all that has 'Google' written on is now cool, fancy and hip! Yay for vacation response...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is the news really that huge to you that you need an exclamation mark!??!!!!?!?!!!?!? No digg.

- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maskawanian: It doesn't do vacation responses to mailing lists. Says so in the page linked to by the digg article.
- allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nise!
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I just noticed gmail never had an auto response feature.
- Maskawanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh god no, those are so annoying, especially when you are subscribed to many mailing lists.
- voyetra8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! Who gives a *****?
- swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are probably in violation of some software patent. Use it while you can.
- ejeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for grade my post. Still just change my opinion...so take if for what it is...my opinion!
- gutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vacation Auto-reply can be setup by Clicking on "Customize" on the upper right hand tab of gmail's main page and Modifying the "General" settings. There is a checkbox for Vacation to be sent only to your contacts, otherwise it defaults to everyone.
The auto-response sent to Forged addresses is also considered "Back-scatter" and have a tendency to spam many unintended recipients. - jay7890, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forgive me for not getting too excited.
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. I like this. NOT. And anyways... your spelling is horrible.
- Neil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do. On both of my Gmail accounts. Maybe they are slowly introducing. Well, for sure it is here (a little later for some).
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That means I can now setup Gmail vacation response on my non active gmail accounts to sent spam each other back and forth to spam them self to death until each one of the account runs out disc space!!!
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GREAT Idea: Submit Digg stories via Gmail! That way when that feature comes out you can use it to report about itself to Digg. Whoa.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! Another INCREDIBLE innovation from Google! Way to go!
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Speaking of Spam, if you visit you Spam folder on Gmail you'll see a random spam related recipe. I do.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On a mailing list for a convention I go to (Otakon) somebody put up his vacation response up at the start of the week leading up to it, and he got the daily digest, so every day there was another mail from him saying "I'm away till Monday blah blah blah."
- DoMaGe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@everyone who reads above post
This post is best read in a Commander Data voice. - BentAxel69, on 06/24/2008, -0/+0Wow, this is really cool, I want this too. This is going to be so helpfull and convenient.
Bent | http://www.africangamelodges.com - XDataBurn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I didn't like it upon first glance, but when I read a bit I saw that it is rather well done. Automated responses aren't new or anything, but this one only sends it to contacts, and only after they have sent you multiple emails. Otherwise it would just let every spammer that end you herbal wankle enlargement info would know your email address is good. Not that any spam would get through gmail anyway. Even with that, no thing special, no digg.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/srs - Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i get all my email on my blackberry now (as long as I am in range), but its a handy feature. +DIGG
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, how long until MSN/Yahoo rip this off?
- nate007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read my email while on vacation.
- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In reply to CritterNYC's response, you can always check 'Only send a response to people in my Contacts' so then it won't reply to span.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CritterNYC: It doesn't respond to stuff that Gmail marks as Spam, which eliminates much of the problem you cited. GMail's spam filter is among the best I've ever seen.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg should autospell check body + Subject
- nealibob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No offense, but how lazy or shy do you have to be to need this feature? If there's someone who's going to freak out when they send you an email and you don't reply immediately, you're going to know this and tell them before hand. If you have a massive contact list, no one on it is likely accustomed to rapid responses from you. Basically, this is an annoyance. If you need automatic responses, use instant messaging like the rest of the world.
- b10m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh joy, amazing news. Now Google also knows when you are on vacation. Good for their huge index of personal data...
- modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So, how long until MSN/Yahoo rip this off?" I hope that was some sort of sarcastic question. If not Yahoo has had this for years now. I'm sure that of course Yahoo did steal this idea from google and to really throw you guys off they put it out before google did.
- duncantuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what I don't get .. Google supposedly has 4,000 of the smartest people on earth working for them. How did it take THIS long to think up and code a vacation response for gmail?
- ejeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow Vacation Message that's cool, NOT. Yahoo and Hotmail has had this features for years...oh and there is better because you can actual set a schedule to start it and stop it...cant do that on gmail! Why does everyone have a hard on for Google's gmail. It doesn't have a 10th of the features Yahoo has. Ok it has size...which I will never use. And it does have POP access...once again I will never use. But it needs so much work. I love how everyone was so thrilled when gmail got virus protection...once again Yahoo and Hotmail have had this for a long long time. I dont get it? The interface sucks, no calendar, the vacation feature isn't that great, I cant send alerts to my cell via text messages. Someone help me out...why does everyone thing gmail is so great. They are doing thing that everyone else has already done and the things they are doing arent even as good. Just wait till the Yahoo Webmail Beta goes live...google will need big help...BIG!!! AJAX based webmail client with Tabs...now that ROCKS!!! When will gmail have this, oh wait they still dont even have a calendar function yet...what a Joke. Look at it for what it is a webmail system that looks like everyone elses did 4 years ago only alot fat 2.6GB fat...which is cool...if you need it...but thats it!!!
