Gmail is officially headed for the office!
seattlepi.nwsource.com — Starting Monday, Google will offer Google Apps for Your Domain, a free package of programs for businesses, universities and other organizations. Companies will be able to send e-mail with Gmail, but messages will carry their company's domain name. The package also includes Google's online calendar, IM, and Page Creator.

- ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I have been using this for my account for some time now. I love the gmail interface, and I dont have to have it attached to a @gmail account.
Its awesome.
Gmail search feature is what I love, and the labels. I no longer have to put emails into a single folder. I can have them "archived" and then linked to several different labels.
its awesome, and I love it.
Only thing that bothers me is the whole privacy thing.... gmail has all of my emails, its kinda scary. not that i have anything to worry about, it just seems like they got access to the whole worlds lives. - bass0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, I second the privacy thing. It's just that I use my e-mail for such inconspicuous things that I wouldn't feel worried if someone (who doesn't even know me) peeks at it. It could still prove to be a problem in the future, though. Who knows, if we ever get a Big Brother, then a lot of personal information can become compromising.
- abuser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1>I no longer have to put emails into a single folder.
That's exactly what you're doing with Gmail.
You label it, but logically it's as if all the email is in the same folder.
> I can have them "archived" and then linked to several different labels.
How will you archive them when the total size goes over what Gmail provides? - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5a? Heh, that's a funny directory for this thing. :)

- kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks like competition with Microsoft may really intensify if Google adds its spreadsheets and word-processing applications to the mix. Google Enterprise General Manager Dave Girouard said those applications were "really good candidates" for future releases:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_Apps_for_Your_Domain_Is_Here_Threatens_Microsoft_Market_Share - vraa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Good deal, I like the Google mentality when applied to webapps (or maybe it's just me). To clarify, the whole minimalistic theory.
As much as I love the new Yahoo Mail (Beta) and Windows Live (Hotmail Beta) it's just too cluttered compared to Gmail. Don't get me wrong... I'm not saying Gmail is perfect, but in my eyes it seems more efficient with it's ability (I don't use them) labels and the whole Star a message feature is great (that I use a lot when I need to get back to an email in an hour or so).
I already use Google Hosted for my companies emails, I can't wait to see what else they'll allow me to use Googles servers for. The only problem I have is that I can't sync it on my servers at work, but that's a small drawback compared to all the advantages that Gmail has over running your own server. - akline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been using this for about 5 or 6 months now for 2 of my sites. You can even incorporate your own logo into the sign in page instead of Google's logo. This, combined with Gtalk for mobile phones and mobile gmail have made my BlackBerry almost obsolete.
- akline, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3The biggest pain is the sign in url: http://mail.google.com/hosted/yourdomainname. I guess TinyURL is always a good option.
- StammesOpfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9well if you have a domain you can always have a page point to the email login anyway
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1yeah ive been using this for my domain for a while. Since I am the only person using my domain i do not have a link to the hosted gmail and it is a huge pain to type in the URL.
Also i get a ton of spam at my domain name and gmail didnt catch 95 out of 1200 spam messages. Thats not that great. - daza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Works very well for me. I setup a redirect at mail.xxx.xxx so it gets sent to the login form.
I also set up forwarding so I only use the one account to send and receive emails from my prior Gmail account and my new, personal one. Works very well for me.
The only downside is, to the best of my knowledge, you cannot use the Gmail notifier with hosted accounts. If there is a third party app -- which I suspect there is, to let me do such thing, could someone let me know? - esuomynona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@daza
GTalk should work as a notifier. - henryaj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Google's own Notifier works just fine with hosted accounts.
- hobnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From Google's own Notifier::::
An error has occurred.
Cannot read your messages (bad data; 1)
- christiancadeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just got accepted into the program and will be testing it out. Pretty fast acceptance as after filling out the signup, they sent me an email 2 minutes afterwards. Here is the automated email:
Welcome to Google Apps for Your Domain!
We're excited to help you offer Gmail accounts and other communication and sharing tools to all of your users.
Your organization has been automatically accepted for this service, and by now you should have created a new administrative account for your domain -- something like admin at christiancadeo.com. This admin account gives you access to the Google Apps for Your Domain control panel (https://www.google.com/hosted/christiancadeo.com). If you haven't already done so, you should log in to the control panel to set up your user list, select the services that you want, and activate those services. The control panel also lets you add additional administrators and adjust a variety of domain settings. If you get stuck, you can always access our help center.
Feedback is always appreciated, so feel free to tell us about what's working for you and how we can improve. You can get in touch with us through the help center.
All the best,
The Google Team- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i remember when i first signed up for it (when the news that this was available was leaked)
it took about a month.
i set up another domain with it about 2 months ago, it took about 2 weeks... and now its instantaneous.
anyways, its a great service for people who dont run their own mx servers and dont want to use crappy webmail provided by their hosting company.

- flyerzeng, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0great!

flyerzeng@gmail.com - LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1but how much will it cost
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It free.
I think - DigitalCreators, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0you're allowed to add 25 accounts on the free account plan
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It free.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess they already control the people. Next stop, business.
- JonRick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is this really new? I've been using this for almost a year now. I mean, it's been in beta but I've apply for it many times with several domain names and have always gotten in every time.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I wouldn't trust google or any other company with its hands in every pocket with my corporate email.
- kenji4861, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Agreed with Jonrick.. already around
http://mail.spoofee.com for example- jwyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used DynDNS and CustomDNS to set the CNAME mail.domain.com to offline and gave the URL http://mail.google.com/hosted/domain.com as the Offline URL. Works great!
- ricky1146, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2This is mean, i love Google, but mean. I will explain Friday i gave a presentation, for a class grade. The idea is say you had a fictional university TTI (Texas Technical Institue) reversed from ITT Tech (where i go to) Well i offered up Gmail for domains and every Google product, and said this eliminates the cost of a web server, and also to mention it is all free.
And 2 days later They change it and add all this info i coulda used in the presentation. Gosh dang it google. - seweso, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Want to try it out but you do not have a spare domain lying around? I can give you a @xurble.com account. Just send a mail to admin@xurble.com and specify which username you want.
Do you have a domain with 'Google Apps for Your Domain' which you want to share with the world, then you can send me the name of your domain and an email adres where you want to recieve account requests. - omegadan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone see a way to make a domain account deliver to an already established accont?
- esuomynona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if you can "import" an existing gmail account into the hosted system?
I setup a couple of small businesses with Google services before hosted accounts were even available for beta. They now have a whole bunch of emails and calendar events associated with their individual google accounts.
They are happy with the way everything functions now, but I would like to be able to manage them easier.- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish.
- q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope that gmail will eventually do local synchronization, so that you can look at your email when not online. Even though I still prefer Google, the new windows live (aside from being cluttered) does a nice job coordinating for both online and offline.
- damoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mail.google.com/* is blocked by work filters (filtering is done on a hostname basis). Anyone know if I setup an alias blah.mydomain.net to point to mail.google.com, will it work?
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I'm still fairly new to Gmail, but I'm not 100% sold yet. I have six other e-mail addresses that must be kept separate, but not allow all forwarding (go figure), and there's really no way for Gmail to catch them for me. Unless I'm missing something. It's nice to be able to send from other e-mails, but I still have to open these accounts in other windows or my mail program. Which just doesn't simplify ease. Dah well.
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can set it up to send from other domains... check your settings.
- jimm0228, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Gmail rocks. I have several accounts with them and use them for all my blogs to have a nice and reliable email account. Also with a few tweaks you can use it as a virtual online disk to store content.

http://freshvideo.blogspot.com - wibblewibble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0How can I manage these for my company? How is page creator a useful office tool??? Its not even close to SHAREPOINT.
- brechmos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I would love to see, though, is a shared address book. It is great to have all the apps together. If they added an address book that was "company wide" and then the ability to add personal addresses only, that would be powerful.
- hobnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google: Make it so
- scottie2hottie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does have a shared address book for all users on the domain. Pretty cool.
- Moly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We have been using this service for about a month, and we will not be going back to The Old Way. Within a couple of days of getting it set up our users universally said they wanted The Old Way to be forgotten...weeks ago.
The spam filtering alone is much better than what we were able to do on our own.
The only drawback is that some of the other google account features like spreadsheets (which btw doesn't completely suck, surprisingly enough, although it isn't nearly as powerful or fast as Oo.o) don't show up in the services area. - turbo2ltr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooooh, I see they have implimented a catch-all. This was the deal breaker for me last time...
- Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using gmail for your domain since March. I'm using it for my small business and it works great. Plenty of space and plenty of emails. And free is the perfect price for a tiny business like mine. This is a great service for anyone with a small business.
- thoth92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gmail for your domain has been around for a while, Google Apps for your domain is new.
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the open signup process IS new, however.
- chiacomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I signed up using a personal domain and was accepted immediately -- I requested 30 accounts. Setup was a breeze and the whole thing is up and running in under 30 minutes.
"Cool!" I thought... I registered a domain for the small municipality on whose board I sit and I was put on the waiting list -- I requested 100 accounts. Strange.
I love Gmail and Google's services. It'll be cool if they approve my second request!- chiacomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Follow up: I got my invite for my municipal domain today. Everything is working swimmingly!
I wonder what Google will charge for this service, eventually?
- chiacomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Follow up: I got my invite for my municipal domain today. Everything is working swimmingly!
- mac4xbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OLD NEWS
- Jon20usa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is perfect timing. I am helping some people who just got a business started and they wanted me to get the a domain name and email. With the POP access that Google provides this will be perfect. And if they want to use it at home they have one of the best (IMO) web mail interfaces.
Thanks for offering this for free Google. Please don't screw it up by having privacy issues.
