- IzuXIII, on 10/12/2007, -3/+176Good for you for posting your own retraction.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+109I just LOVE the fact that I was one of the first people to reply to that story to indicate that it doesn't work, and asking if people in the United States were ineligible -- only to be instantly and severely dug down. It's not that I'm whining about my precious little comment getting buried or anything, I'm just wondering what the hell is wrong with some of the people here?
There should be some kind of an IQ test before you're allowed to moderate other people's comments. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -4/+66Good for digg for actually digging it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54@ilyag
Its digg, there is a lot wrong with a lot of the people here. - GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -11/+61come on revmonkey, as much as you want to think so...NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT POLITICS!
- joshcook83, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43to be honest, that story was an eye-opener for me regarding my poor digging habits.
- neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38it's ok, the internets at the googles forgive you.
- DeathtoG4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Now if only all diggers had this guys ethics
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27The problem is people use the thumbs as yes or no agreements, and not just to mod down stupid comments. They abuse the system. Its why people who ask legitimate questions get thumbed down.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20-all -diggers +everyone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you've never been there, right?
- Tawakol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15and how do u know that? have u ever been to egypt? or even better, do you live there? egypt is one of the fastest growing countries in north africa and the middle east, i don't consider it third world anymore, but its not first world yet..
don't judge without knowing; the people at google aren't stupid, they've gone this far, there is a reason why they chose egypt
for your information too, the poster is egyptian too.. - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Read the description again.
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14ilyag:
i always thought there shoudl be some sort of moderation point system - not as much like slashdot's per se, but maybe something like if you constatnly give thumbs down (lets say 100 per story, where its obviously not warranted) - your thumbs are now worth less since you obviously use them way too much. that or if your comments constantly get dugg up, your thumbs are now worth more since you are obviously a good contributor. however, even in just the time i spent writing this i thought of about 1000 ways you could abuse the system so i doubt anything like that would ever happen... - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you actually read the damn link he explains why Egypt was picked...
FFS people... read. - BigCalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Very interesting insight about the whole digg process. And Bravo, Atta Boy, Good Job for the retraction. Class act.
- AlanLivingston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So wait... What he's saying is that peer editting isn't as good as moderated editting because, basically, peers are clueless?
So, you have two choices, quicker access to topics whose quality suffers or delayed access with better quality.
Looks like you still have to think for yourself. Damn! - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -4/+11is this really an issue anyway. who doesn't have a friend with gmail or a cell phone
- ubuntumatthew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I dugg this solely because the poster took responsibility for his mistake. Good job!
- Schpariel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Tawakol:
Egypt isn't a 3rd world country, it WAS one a couple of years ago. 3rd world countries are countries that have a low HDI (Human development index). Egypt has a medium HDI now. - darthtofu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think it was probably dugg because we all already have gmail addys :P
- nikkesen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Wisam
I'm impressed that you apologised for the misinformation, given the amount of asinine ***** that comes through digg like liquid ***** through a goose on any given day.
If more people posted retractions when they are wrong, digg would be a better place. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Off with his head!
- aamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Tawakol:
"Third world" does not have a clear definition. The U.N. rates Egypt as "medium" in development. I've seen people use the term "third world" for countries that are rated medium whereas others prefer to only use for countries that are rated low. I use the former definition; but you are free to disagree and consider it "developing".
In any case, I sense that you are offended at me calling Egypt "third world." If it makes you feel any better, I'm originally from Pakistan which, in terms of per-capita income, is clearly even more third world than Egypt.
EDIT:
@Schpariel: Incorrect, there is no clear definition. Some consider "third world" to be countries that are both "low" AND "medium" in HDI. - xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess your mea culpa stories get to the front page just as fast as your regular ones. You got some friends on digg.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have 100 gmail invites that i cant even give away.
- Tawakol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3could u tell me why it should be considered third world? i consider it to be developing..thats not third world
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does liquid ***** go faster through a goose than any other animal?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4congratulations to the retards digging both stories.
- aamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@m3mn0n:
Just read the article. Ok, so I understand why it's open there now. But I still disagree with the previous commenter who says "i don't consider it third world anymore" - LeftblankN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny to see this guy is making frontpage for the second time with a story without any valueable content, marked as spam.
- dzmetcalf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Bravo
- d17182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Go here to bury the inaccuracy:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Gmail_now_open_No_invitation_or_cell_registration_required - jeanmaxime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That doesn't make sense. How many morons and clueless people vote in an election? A lot. The fact that they are morons doesn't give anyone the right to remove their voting rights.
That's what's happening on digg right now. People digg stories without reading. And the digg ancient community blame them.
New users just have to be educated.
And i think that first we have to bury more bad stories! - aamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes, Egypt is pretty much third world. I've been there three times over the past two years and my wife is from Cairo. I don't understand why it's open there either.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place and people are nice, but as far as technology goes, it is definitely not up to par with, say Japan/Australia/New Zealand - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude... I'm just trying to take it to the next leve... you've heard of people who don't read the article... now you've meet the first person who doesn't read the headline blurb before commenting.... hey, at least I didn't digg it.
- speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://bytetest.com/
If you don't have gmail yet. - PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ ilyag
Maybe the people who dugg you down live in Egypt?
ha (sarcasm) - ctomasi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quick plug on the top of Gmail... Gmail Podcast (http://www.chuckchat.com/gmail) is a collection of short hints, tips, and tricks to help you get more from your Gmail account.
- Schpariel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Eric Schmidt went to Egypt and he signed an agreement with the Ministry of education!?
And how many Egyptians are going to use the service? Probably just the educated upper-class people in big cities like Cairo and Alexandria, which are (as always) a minority. - whiskeysquared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First story was correct, I have a couple of different accounts to receive mail from different domains I have; and I went to create another last night without "inviting" myself. Logged out, and right under the login was the offer to create a new account. And I'm in the US.
- TheTap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ilyag,
Spend a few days on Usenet and you will see that unmoderated forums are full of morons and clueless people. Flame Wars have been started for much less. It's the big downside to letting everyone have an opinion.
And who am I to talk?
In my haste to give you a thumbs up I hit the red one by mistake. This will send me down but maybe I deserve it for that move. - pexor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I buried it as inaccurate yesterday... I'm sure some other people did too. How come I haven't seen a story labeled as inaccurate in forever?
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool my Mum in Australia will finally set up a gmail account and then use gtalk to IM through her browser .
I tried to get her to sign up before and she said it was too hard to get acess through her mobile phone ect . - Tawakol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@aamer: it doesn't offend me exactly, but it pisses me off when i see how egypt has developed in the last couple of years, and i compare now to 2-3 years ago and i can see a huge difference. which makes me proud and i can see a loooot of potential in egypt to become even better. but then someone on the internet comes and calls egpyt a third world country
- StarDal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The story wasn't 'false'. It was a very real story just not complete. Marking this one as inaccurate.
- Tawakol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know that..i just wanted aamer's opinion
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4lambs... like lambs we are...
digg is the koolaid stand for lemmings... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The first story was correct. If users in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Egypt can register with no codes or invitation then the service is open.
You cannot "half" open a pre release product, it is either fully open or fully closed. - RufusSeptimus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Too bad he isn't using adsense like a certain other digg posted recently...he'd be raking in the bucks too
