duh...."
i think he was kidding dude.. - hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1imho this is prolly just a conspiracy theory on my part, but what if google knew noone could use infinite email space so lied about the space? and just said we are adding more, but already have enough to fill everyones needs and when it starts to fill up add another server. IDK they may just actually have THAT much space =/
conspiracy of the day

- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did Kevin Rose ever fill his gmail account up back on TSS? i remember him giving out his gmail account address and telling everyone to email files. that was back in the days of 1 gig...
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know whether to be Grammar Nazi, Digg Police, or "Helpful" Informer first... I'll start with Grammar Nazi :)
"'coffee33 il invite you'"
I don't know if anyone actually read coffee33's comment or what but he was OFFERING invites not looking for them. I swear it's like I'm diggin' with my brother's kids or something."
I'm not sure if you actually read it, but he said "anyone want to invite" not "anyone want an invite". The "to invite" is a verb in the infinitive, meaning to give an invitation, or "invite" in web slang.
"Helpful" Informer:
As proven by krose's test with filling his Gmail account, they give you a small amount of space at first and it increases as you use it. The reason he was locked out of his account was because he exceed his small amount too quickly. Had it happened gradually it would have gracefully increased itself to the gig.
Now, finally, Digg Police:
I don't see how this constitutes Digg-worthy. We all knew that the space was counting up, and we knew it was going to hit 2.5 GB eventually and those of us who use it knew it was 2.5 now anyway. I mean, this frontpaging means that it's Digg-worthy for me to submit "Gmail Steps Over 2643.43784658 Megs of Storage" (for those who are mentally impaired, it isn't Digg-worthy). - MarkBlu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02499.312xxx
Not quite 2500 but it's all good.
By the way google's servers are just scattered x86 linux computers in Google-owned datacenter housings around the world with standard IDE 5400 and 7200rpm hard drives and no special above-average hardware. At least that's what I read about on a bunch of articles about Google. Google also made their own Web server, "GWS", or Google Web Server, a customized Apache server I think. Maybe someone could find out more info on this? Well nice digg though, and I'm at 4% and I save everything also lol. - masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm currently using 8%, but that's only because I did a mass delete a few months back (long story why, and I don't care to explain). I was using about 27% then. CowboyBebop, the biggest problem with your math (I don't care to check the numbers since anybody can do that) is that even people who only use it for e-mail and not for file storage will still receive (relatively) large files such as pictures and video clips from friends and family. In fact, one friend of mine filled up her gig in a couple of months because of pictures, spreadsheets, and Word and Publisher documents that were e-mailed to her. I can only imagine what would happen to people who actually use it for file storage.
- CowboyBebop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's why I said ONLY for emails, with NO attachments. If you use it only for text email, then you literally would never have to delete any of your emails for the rest of your life. Granted, if you use attachments and you keep the attachments, such as pictures, files, etc., then yes, you will use it up and will most likely have to delete some of your emails.
Sheesh, since it's free, you could have one address for just text emails and one or more for pictures and such. Gotta love Gmail! - ST3V3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG i just realized if you go to mail.google.com you can see how much storage they offer and it keeps going up by the second.
- zagi1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got my account from a friend of a friend who works at google last April and loving it.
sure beats picking the right name lol - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone want an invite, e-mail me: sk9fdym02@sneakemail.com
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha...im barely using only 3% too haha....its weird that some people in digg dont have invites yet but in case you needs i gots some too...adolfoturcios (at) gmail.com
- markbaltes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks google, i love gmail.
- Morphia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when the hell is GMail going to be released so anyone can sign up? sorry if this was discusses above but i didn't feel like reading it lol

- syracuseman44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hello, can someone invite me to gmail? My email address is t_outlaw05@yahoo.com. Thank you.
- alfal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ITs easier when you are using the gmail filesystem :)
- Jon99UT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks like they've also stopped expanding at 2500MB, anyone else notice this?
- snatchedlaus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man this is weird i got my 50 invites and sent my friend one Next time I checked my gmail I had 50 again
- pmflyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are they REALLY going to keep increasing the storage?
- TimLynch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a GMailFS that works easily on Win or even better for OS-X? The last verstion that I saw was a Linux shell application. I wanna drag and drop.
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'm not sure if you actually read it, but he said "anyone want to invite" not "anyone want an invite". The "to invite" is a verb in the infinitive, meaning to give an invitation, or "invite" in web slang."
That's it. I'm going to get tested for dyslexia. I have been reading things incorrect more and more these days. I swear I read that many times because I thought I was just reading it wrong. - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0invites (scroll down to bottom): http://videogamepirate.com
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got plenty of invites - e-mail me at billpoly (at) gmail.com. Happy to help!
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's easier to say 2.5 gigs....I've got over the 2500 limit already
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CowboyBebop: I know that's what you said, and that's why I commented. You start by assuming no attachments and then make the conclusion, or at least it seems to be implied, that Gmail offers more storage than anybody will need. I only see this because, if it is not correct, then your post served only to state Gmail's main selling point: That you should never have to delete an e-mail.
- CowboyBebop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, someone correct me if I'm wrong on my math here, because I could very well be wrong.
If you figure that the average email is 1.5kb with NO attachments, then that means approximately 667 emails for every megabyte of storage. Multiply that 2500MB, then you get 1.67 MILLION emails.
If you figure that the average person lives to the ripe age of 75 and doesn't start emailing consistently until they're 10 or older, that leaves you 65 years of emailing.
If you divide 1.67 million by 65, you get approximately 25,000 emails for every year of those emailing years. Divide that by 365 days (for simplification, we'll forget about leap years), you get approximately 69 emails a day!!!
Excluding spam, who sends and receives about 35 emails every day? IOW, if you use your account SOLELY for email, the only emails you'd ever have to delete for your entire life would be spam. - agentpolgas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"back in tha day , kevin rose did a segment on techtv and when he filled the 1 gig, gmail servers locked him out of his account.. imagine filling the 2.5 gig. :("
Does anyone have the link to this story. It's very intriguing. Hmmmm...

- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a pretty terrible "article". First off...who really cares. It was announced long ago that the limit would steadily increase. Also, it appears as though you have unlimited invites, that's why when you invite someone it goes right back up to 50 (I could be wrong on that). And why is everyone saying they have invites? My dog has invites...it's not that big of a thing. If you don't have an account it's pretty easy to get one so everyone on digg doesn't need to announce to the world they have invites.
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"coffee33 il invite you"

- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe Gmail isn't out of Beta yet and you still need invites to get in.
- sufferingant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who wants an invite email me @ hacker.cory@gmail.com...ill invite you
- twalker294, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
No, it's not dumb at all. In fact I'm sure it's true. Do you really think that they have enough free storage space allocated to give everyone 2.5 gigs? No way. That would be ludicrous and a ridiculous waste of space. Thinking they DO is the dumbest thing I've ever heard... - wyldtek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google offers POP support so you don't need to use it as web mail. I'm not sure about a SMTP server..."
You can send and receive POP mail using gmail. You just need to set it up according to the instructions. - randylovin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hear Google is selling stock now.
- billadakilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have 49 invites, if u want me to send you one IM me at retrogradeINC on aim.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+071% used. I use it for storage too.
Eric Wilson - ganon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kick ass if it keeps going up ill never run out of space
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0two accounts and you've got yourself a 5gig hard drive accessible from anywhere, that's handy.
- sherlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm using 2%, but I nuke the media files that get sent to me.
I do have a friend who was approaching the 1 Gb mark and was relieved when Google announced 2+. He gets a lot of media files.
If anyone wants a gmail invite, email me. sherlock at gmail. Cheers. - dbrown1981, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"As stated previously, no one *normal* uses even close to that."
That's why we all love it!! Most of us that use gmail aren't *normal* internet users. You'd be surprised how many people i know that use large %'s their space. - dconlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hybrid8 that's not a conspiracy theory; I'm pretty sure they don't actually have 2,500MB for every user. Probably more like 5MBma per account (on average). Like you said, they'll add more storage as people fill up their accounts. Disk space is only getting cheaper...
- gwash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if u need invites email me
