- osrevad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3GMail does not save every deleted email forever. They basically say that "when you delete an email, the backup copy of the email may linger for a couple days. We'll do our best to get rid of it ASAP"
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is because of Google Talk. You have to have a gamil account to use it so they want everyone to have a gmail account.
- bloodwings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i read this digg a couple hours ago, and for me, gmail invites are still required. i don't get it.
- jbmicastorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know about Gmail being in "beta" for that long, but keeping it user limited to being invited has help keep the service from being bloated by spamers. Good on ya Gmail.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don’t know why everyone thinks Gmail is bad. Microsoft and Yahoo do the same thing Google does. Google just has the balls to admit it. I don’t even want to know what Microsoft does with their Hotmail accounts!
Glad Gmail finally comming out of beta, I'm sick of inviting people! - RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm loving gmail... only just started using it though. I now have all my comcast mail sent to my gmail account... best SPAM filter I have ever seen too, Im sure google talk will rock :)
- evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, What about Saskatchewan. I live there :)
But I cannot see why Gmail really had to be in BETA for that long. That was way too much :S - racaruso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great...after I wasted like 250 invites this afternoon, getting all my MySpace idiot friends a GMail account...which in itself is soooo April 2004...
WTF!!
I coulda saved those...I coulda been a contender...
Anyway, GoogleTalkers, add me: racaruso@gmail.com
We'll work something out...
GOOGLE OS FOR PRESIDENT 'O8!! - screwzluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Retarded... The argument about GMail being insecure is dumb. If you have something that you really don't want Google reading or something, why would you be using email? Why would not be encrypting it? Why wouldn't you just talk to the person face to face? Hell, that shiny hat you're wearing would probably help against the heat, so what the hell.
- Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like the ignorant person who submitted this story to realise that
a) not everyone has a cell phone
b) more importantly, not everyone lives in the US - towle_42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nnnnooooo! The public is not worthy of its greatness. I will miss people asking me for invites,
- YoshoKatana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's because Gmail is probably still in BETA. One shouldn't believe a source if they're the only person saying that Gmail is open. I trust the Gmail Website more than them.
Also: why does everyone have conspiracies about Google? It's quite hilarious really, the strange things paranoid people will say. - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't say anywhere that it will be out of beta. The only place it mentions beta is "Gmail has been in a wide pubic beta-test for that entire time, open only to users who get invited by other users." This is Google after all, everything is always beta. Groups, news, froogle, local, earth, etc are all still beta :)
- barelyadraft, on 10/16/2008, -0/+0write to sorenfo at gmail ..dot.. com. to get an invite if you want and this does not work for you
- TeChGuRL19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeez about time!
- mwallace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"... Gmail will be open and free to U.S. users but will require that they use a mobile phone capable of receiving text messages to prove they're legitimate users."
Are they going to get rid of everyone invites now, or what? Confusing. - gundammman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I'm saying is things usually seem cooler when when less people have it. I'm not saying it a fact! heheh, I'm a childish 8th grader...sweet!
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're worried about people seeing your message, don't use email at all. And when google "reads" your email it's a program analyzing the message to provide you with ads. It's not a human reading each message.
- edtruckell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most annoying is that this only applies to US users. Still have to search for another invite then...
- tankexmortis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, that figures. I spent a few hours searching for an invite earlier in order to use Google Talk, and now they make them unnecessary.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gmail doesn't scan email for spamming they do it to generate the text ads on the right side of the screen when you open an email. I see less spam in Gmail than I do in my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts.
- sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So the three people in Saskatchewan who just couldn't get an invite can finally come in out of the cold (not literally, of course.)
- towle_42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nnnnooooo! The public is not worthy of its greatness. I will miss people asking me for invites, i will no longer have the power! Mwa ha ha ha ha!
- Revo_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just so everyone knows gmail archieves each and every last email you send/recv even if you "delete" it for ever. Plus on top of that google builds a profile on you. So don't use it if your some what paranoid. Its good for spam though.
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh whoops, I didn't read the bottom, lol my bad :p
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok......where in that link does it mention anything about Gmail being out of beta???
- resetpassword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so much trouble for gmail now, texting a message. glad i got an invite, way easier.
- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol. I wonder if they'll save your cellphone number and send you messages after the invite. They probably wont, but that'll be another piece of info they have on you in their network to build these profiles on you, which might worry the privacy folks even more.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0News flash for the paranoid: every email service with a spam filter "reads" your email.
Now, let's talk about how it "reads". What it's doing is running sentences and words through filters. I believe Gmail's filters are so good because you can report spam. When you report an email as spam, Gmail will scan and index that message to figure out what it can add to its filters. If enough people report similar messages as spam then it can safely add a filter for it. THe opposite happens when you report something as 'not spam'.
As for indexing words, yeah, what it does is build something like Google's web index for your mailbox. That's why it's so good at searching for your email. - highway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.highwayman.org/gmail -- free and automated, human required to apply :)
- webagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sure, the possibilities are there, but to discount everything they have done because "it could eventually happen" gets you where? Be afraid! Everyone is out to get you! Beware Big Brother!! Please, I have more important things to waste my time with than what Google's automated indexing crawler is finding in my emails."
Who said discount everything? I was responding to your original post which was quite reactionary. This isn't an all-or-nothing argument or issue. The idea is to have a balance. I think that Google's position is leaning towards tipping that balance and their direction indicates that it will tip further. I am not saying that it will happen, only stating that this could be dangerous and pointing out the facts. You are simply ridiculing the arguments, characterizing me as a kook, and not addressing the question. Simply stating that something won't or can't happen, or that you have "more important things to waste" your time on does not address the issue. You avoid the question and present no counter arguments.
People who "trust" a corporation, which only has the goal of making money (not necessarily honestly, but not necessarily dishonestly) are just as silly as those who fear everything and wear tinfoil hats.
"The only ones that are afraid are those that have something to hide."
Okay, now you just sound like a fascist. Is that in the mission statement of your "webhosting company"? Nice to see that you care about the privacy of your customers. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so far as of yet no way to sign up for it....probably later today you'll be able to
- SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0**webagogue I think you are a little too paranoid. No one at google is going to be reading your emails. Google is not out to take over the world. **
Guess what. Google actually *IS* out to dominate the Internet. They are a public company whose shares are $300 each. They answer to NOBODY but investors. If you think that Google isn't as corporate as Ford, Bell or Microsoft, then you're insane. People thought Microsoft was benign at one point too. Google is not going to be the first corporation on the face of the earth to make decisions out of the good of their corporate hearts - all decisions will be based on increasing shareholder profit, period.
And anyone who has anything 'secret' to say over email - give me a break, your plain-text email is as insecure as Gmails fake 'deletions'. Three letters solve all problems - PGP. - dnthomps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still BETA....
When I logged in with my google.com/ig account I get the following:
orry, this is not a valid Gmail login.
You cannot log into Gmail using your Google Account username and password.
Gmail is in a limited test period and is only available to a small number of people who are helping test and improve the service before it is made more widely available.
If you have been asked to test Gmail and have not yet created a Gmail account, please click on the link in your invitation email.
If you have been asked to test Gmail and have already created a Gmail account, please try to log in again using your Gmail username and password. - pinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0add me: temporarygate@gmail.com
- FlatLine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03 outta 5 hot karls....
gmail is tottaly radical, thats right....radical - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, anyone who's wanted an invite has one.
- R_Cubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As of 10:09 EST, it is still in BETA.
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"No, anyone who so cavalierly discounts Google's practices as innocent and does not give any consideration to the possibilities for abuse (and they are huge) is a moron AND does not know what they are talking about."
Right.. As if Google would spend all this money and time to making a system just to steal your info to sell to someone else. And what would they get? More stats that everyone else already collects on the internet. Google's entire capital is built on everyones trust, they break that, they loose all that stock they are currently playing with. Sure, the possabilities are there, but to dicount everything they have done because "it could eventually happen" gets you where? Be afraid! Everyone is out to get you! Beware Big Brother!! Please, I have more important things to waste my time with than what Google's automated indexing crawler is finding in my emails.
And yes, Exchange servers Index and archive your email automatically, so your company is reading your email too. Big woop.. I run a webhosting company, and OUR servers index and archive emails. The only ones that are afraid are those that have something to hide. - ajcannon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0webagogue I think you are a little too paranoid. No one at google is going to be reading your emails. Google is not out to take over the world.
I think it is pretty funny to hear people talk about how google is like the devil. Google is a great company and I trust them 1000 times more than I trust Yahoo or MSN. And on a side note - if you really have something that you don't want other people to read, email is probably not the best way to communicate anyways. You have a much better chance of having someone crack your password to gain access to your account than there is of someone breaking into google's servers and stealing your information. - highway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you don't have a cell phone but still want a gmail invite so that you can use Google Talk, check out http://www.highwayman.org/gmail ...
- bloodwings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg should remove this article, its still in beta.
- emurillo510, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0emurillo510@gmail.com
- energyblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone found how to hack it for different contries yet?
- nakedgremlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a feeling this was going to happen once Google Talk got officially released. After all, what's the worth of an IM client that requires a Gmail account if you don't have a Gmail account.
- rookieone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you go to gmail FAQ's they still say that its not available... ?:
- racaruso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bitches...RACARUSO@GMAIL.COM
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0freakin sweet!
- maaddmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does their site say this still?
2. How do I sign up? When can I get a Gmail account?
We're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. We don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available, as that depends in part on the results of the test. - LtData, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice to hear its out of beta, but the requirement for a phone that receives text message? Booo, my phone can't. Then again, I already have a G-mail account, though.
