- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64Your title says "without reason", but the article description gives two reasons, both of which are fairly good reasons for Gmail to temporarily suspend accounts.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Gotta love those contradicting and misleading titles all over Digg these days.
- insovietrussia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Meh. Hotmail disables your account if you don't use it for 30 days. Now that's stupid.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"...for no apparent reason. There are actually a couple of reasons this might occur..."
Great way to contradict yourself. :) - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wow, they should demand their money back.

""Recently, we finally convinced our girlfriend to switch from earthlink crapola to Gmail." ...Our Girlfriend?"
He's probably from California. Things are different here. - Boing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Mine works, that's all that matters.
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Submitter, I hear Fox News is looking for headline writers, you should apply.
Marked inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6From the article: "Recently, we finally convinced our girlfriend to switch from earthlink crapola to Gmail."
OUR?! - furst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've never had any problems with Gmail, whatsoever. I'm sure there are occasional *****, but overall Google provides a very nice service.
- darkphan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Article updated:
UPDATE: Gmail says they accidentally disabled a huge swatch of user accounts in an attempt to fight a large spammer network, and is actively reinstating these accounts. - poet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not temporary, permanent. I've had a couple accounts disabled that were not used but weekly.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Gmail is the best email system in the world"
Uh, no. Its a good free webmail system with decent uptime, fast searching and generous storage.
However it cannot sort messages (?), or file mail into folders (labels != folders), cut and paste HTML (you cant even paste a photo into a message, it can only be attached), does not offer domains or discrete multiple mailboxes, and its behind the times in interfaces compared to live.com or yahoo mail beta.
Since it is a webmail system it is probably completely accessible by the US government (Google only sends out a press release about that when its good news), and has been hacked on multiple occasions.
Oh but its still in perpetual beta so its all ok right? - krokodil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the reason you should NEVER trust anybody to control you primary email address. Many systems now use user emai address as loging, and most web sites only allow you to recover forgotten password through confimation process via email address on file.
Get yourself a domain and use it for your email address. You can still forward it to gmail, but if Google decides
to screw you instead of begging their non existent customer support you just switch you address to another mailbox provider. - Louisd11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sounds like paypal.
Could google be turning into paypal and just locking people out for the hell of it. Well.. Paypal says they lock accounts because their malicious. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2let me get this straight:
People use Gmail for business?
What kind of ***** retard signs up for a free service that can drop you at any time and bases their whole life on it? What are these people, 16 year olds? Are these businesses being run out of grandma's basement? - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4***** Consumerist again?
Look, it's a good blog. However, not every article from any blog should be making the front page. It's getting ***** annoying. - claybird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Recently, we finally convinced our girlfriend to switch from earthlink crapola to Gmail." ...Our Girlfriend?
- hudef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"you cant even paste a photo into a message, it can only be attached"
BTW I used to love use that option in yahoomail in the old pre-gmail days. But the last time I tried it a couple of months back, it was no longer available. What gives? Does livemail allow it? - hudef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"you cant even paste a photo into a message, it can only be attached"
The other day, one of my gmail accounts showed up with a button to put an image into the message itself, and I used it successfully. So they will probably roll it out to everyone soon. - furst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@hdtvdust
I do believe the small inconvenience he is referring to is the odd chance that you might be a victim of one of the occasional Google screwups. The vast majority of Gmail users never experience problems like this. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having your account disabled is a "small inconvenience"?
No matter how much you suck up to Google, Sergey will never let you suck HIM off. Give it up. - dengzhi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2paypal does suck.
- psykiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish I can digg you twice. I'm also tired of the consumerist stuff
- meeksam, on 04/10/2008, -0/+0I know Gmail is said to be the best but anyone can make mistakes. I just got back in touch with my brother I haven't seen for 20 years through e-mail and lost the account I'm not sure why. I send my bro. a bunch of pictures the last few days and later decieded to change my pw because it had been a while. It worked fine for one day and the next day I went to log on and my pw was not accepted. I was careful and even wrote it down. Still can't get in.Now I'm trying to figure out how to get back into my account. I tried going through the "lost PW " etc. I can't find the way to send them a note either. Any ideas?
- McShifty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A small inconvenience for such a seriously well trained spam ass kicking email client. Give it time, it will be honed more.
Lest we forget the beta factor as well...
Everyone just breathe; we'll all be ok with Google on our side. - x987, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1backup up email, like everything else! use w/e email client u like, just do it(tm)
- Scott802, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2For now....

Gmail is the best email system in the world but many users experience great frustration after getting their accounts disabled for no apparent reason. There are actually a couple of reasons this might occur"
Submitter is contradicting himself in the same statement. Gmail suspends accounts without reason, but there may be a couple of reasons. - NtHammer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1AHHH, another consumerist article!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0If you don't log in at leastr once every 30 days, you are obviously not using that e-mail address for anything important. Do you can't bitch about it being deleted. They are not offering you storage for files or e-mails that you don't really care about.
- MSX2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Why do we complain about services we don't pay for?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1It's well within their TOS to do WTF they want. Not to mention it's a free service. Consumerist needs to stfu and stop bitching and taking things out of hand.
- amal3k, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4"It's probably no coincidence that the uptick lockout complaints corresponds to the time that Google opened up Gmail for registration without invitation."
