- sole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If they integrate Google talk with MSN I'm good. I like Google's clean interface, but all of my pals are on stupid msn. Sigh.
- DiggedBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no ones really mentioned this yet... Gmail was a success, Talk was a failure... what a perfect way for google to force more people to use Talk than automatically sign you in, right inside your browser. I personally hate chatting programs, i'd much rather email back and forth... however, if i go to email someone and i see they are already online, right in my email program, and i know my conversation will be saved exactly like my emails... i probably WILL start to use Talk. Google also needed to come out with something soon, even the fanboys were starting to turn on them with all their recent failures to deliver something worth using.
- Hedgefox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To all those who said "OMFG Google records your messages!"
Do you really think MSN, ICQ or AIM don't record your conversations? - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is really cool....Jabber and e-mail, two open standards merging into one. Not all Google has to do is release a API spec, and other people who provide e-mail and chat *cough*Yahoo,Hotmail, etc.*cough* could implement it, and we'll finally have interoperability between IM clients.
They won't of course, but I can dream. - autoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just to clear things up a bit: RTF! you don't need Gtalk installed to use the chat features in gmail. It just works right away in your browser interface. You will get instant IM connection with your other gmail contacts. What you get by installing standalone gtalk are the audio chat features.

"Stop digging google-related-topics just for the heck of it. NO digg for this..."
Stop telling people what not to digg. This is a seriously cool feature.
Digg++ - Mr5by5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I still don't get why ANYONE uses web-based email."
You have got to be kidding me? This is the way the future of computing is going - making this feature even MORE important. Think about it - Less and less reason to use one OS over the other. My computing experience is the same no matter if I'm on a mac, a Linux machine or windows, and here's the thing - it doesn't matter which one. This feature is just another reason people are watching Google so closely. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would love to use Google Talk vs AIM (actually I use gaim) but the problem is that I have 200 AIM friends and probably 150 of them don't know what gmail or google talk even is....
- EpaL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is brilliant. Just logged in to Google Talk with Trillian Jabber plugin and started chatting... Works right away. My chats are organised in Gmail, with the ability to forward them as emails! Seriously useful too, since I have more than one computer and hate trawling Activity Logs in various copies of Trillian for what i'm looking for.
Now if you can just add buddy icons... - jutendouji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rathead, just so you, MOST people have something called a "LIFE" thus they cannot be at home 24/7 staring at their POP3 clients, not to mention that not ALL people carry around their laptops AND have access to WiFi hotspots, and many of us check their mails from their phones or even from internet cafes.
Yes, much to your surprise, not everyone lives in a city where you turn on your WiFi and you can see 40 SSIDs. Shocker, no?
But anyways, this feature is amazing. I would DEFINITELY have use for this, not to mention you could use it from work or school without a problem (they don't block Gmail usually), and also the fact that SOMEDAY we may see something like this integrating with AIM and MSN is just too cool.
++Digg - dixonr315, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol does anyone else think this inbox is funny? The person's name is Alex, there is an email about a camera, Harry Potter, and a trip to Africa? Doesn't this sound like the last several weeks of Diggnation topics? If you ask me Google is a fan of Diggnation, or maybe its just me.
- Willmonwah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Neat logo here: https://services.google.com/images/gmail/logo1.gif (found on help page: http://mail.google.com/support).
- StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow - you mean people on my Google Talk list might actually sign in once in a while? Awesome!
- incognegro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whoa, cool. Hope this means the new, universally-compatible version of Gtalk is coming soon...
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""""How about they add a useful feature like making the To text by the address bar a hyperlink that goes to your address book and adding addresses that way? I gave GMail a try, and I am going back to hotmail."""""
I agree with that. That is so annoying. It makes it so hard to simply forward a message. Why oh why did Google do that? I hope they eventually add that. It is one of the few "features" I wish Gmail had.
Eric WIlson - Jaydude765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see it now, my college or any other educational institute here will ban access to gmail because "its got chat in it". They allow email but definitely not any kind of chat. Good feature, but a problem when it comes down to that.
As far as I know you don't have to have your chats logged, so it shouldn't be a problem for the paranoid among us, or should it.. o_O - DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gaberbruno - change your language to US.. i know we shouldn't have to, but i've just got groups and some funny webclips thing by doing that :-/
- bcnewman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If they integrate Google talk with MSN I'm good. I like Google's clean interface, but all of my pals are on stupid msn. Sigh."
Ditto... - stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sense some sort of voicemail feature next......
- theundone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's really cool but at the same time I think Gtalk has a long way to go before it could replace Trillian for me. I already record my AIM and MSN chats in Trillian and I really wouldn't want to have a second chat log in gmail. Cool if someone could write a Trillian plugin to save your chats directly to gmail or something.
- mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont know why i care. But i dont want google keeping a copy of my live chat conversations with friends. I didnt seem to care about them keeping my email. But some reason chat seems to be a little too invasive for me. The way the chat works is cool. It will probably increase the number of people who use google talk. I never really used google talk because everyone else I know uses other networks.
- StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mikeod: According to the help article there is an "off the record" setting that makes it so the conversation is not recorded at either end.
- nosnhojm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-> Okashira
The big thing for me is that I can now [easily] log into both my e-mail AND my instant messenger from ANY computer...without having to have pre-installed software. - lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ArchAngel21x, you don't need to go to the address book, just start typing a name or email address and Gmail will autocomplete it for you.
- kkubasik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a blatant Ripoff/summary of using google's federation of servers to chat with AIM/MSN/Yahoo buddies at
http://kubasik.net/blog/
I posted it this morning, but can't remember the link to the full tutorial, its in the post.
If you want to avoid my blog, the full tut is at BigBlueBall. - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it's going to save Google Talk convo's in my gmail account I'm super excited, that's the biggest problem I had with Google Talk, I want to be able to look at what I said 3 weeks ago.
- caseigl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't they fix things like letting me flag for mass delete all the spam in my box? Seriously, 95% of my Gmail is in my spam folder and I hit the quota. That's the down side of keeping the same E-mail address for 10 years ( I am forwarding my regular mail to Gmail ). At least let me tell spam to live 7 days instead of 30!
- kallywag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a plug-in for Trillian that sends your chat logs as emails automatically to your gmail account with an "IM" label, which I have set up to automatically archive. I never even think about it, but all my logs are right there if I need them. But once GoogleTalk can support AIM, this will be much handier (GoogleTalk seems a lot faster than trillian). Here's the plug-in:
http://metame.org/sw/ - rushabh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was about time they did it. I prefer http://www.gtalkr.com !
- TomRitchford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this feature!
To delete ALL your spam at once, go to your Spam box and click on the button at the top of the list of messages marked "Delete all spam messages now".
This feature was I believe rolled out last year. If you don't see it, perhaps for some reason you are seeing a very old version -- try shift-refreshing the page and/or clearing the cache and restarting. - kingwalterii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will this record conversations you have in gtalk as well, not just the web interface?
- G1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is badass.
- aThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice job repeating the title.
- crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Totaly true hedgefox.... Only way to stay clear and setup your own Jabber server. That way you can make sure it doesn't save the logs. I can't see anyother ways unless you encrypt the info before sending and only the person the gets the chat message can read/ decrypt it. Besides that I can't see any other ways.
And I bet that MSN and all the others even store a copy of the files that you send... maybe even the video feeds... and I bet it doesn't stop their either. - ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The second thing - a lot of Jabber clients and tools don't provide way to set server other than that in JabberID (user@server). It will be EXTREMLY nice if Jabber server could be available on port 5222/2223 on "gmail.com", not only "talk.google.com".
- CarLBanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have the chats feature; but not the other items.
- deathguppie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I propose that everyone use the words "terrorist" and "bomb" in every chat session that they use through this service. That way the NSA will leave us alone...
- synerage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is ver cool! I hope more services sign on with Google Talk so this can integrate everything into Gmail.
- kiph, on 04/20/2009, -0/+0****ing awesome (:D
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, don't we have offline messages? They're called emails...
Of course in other IM systems offline messages would be great (THANK YOU YIM!!!), but with googles integration, is it really so much of a requirement? - ripcrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If all of your friends use MSN and AOL, then you need some new friends. :-)
- Okashira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So let me get this straight. On one hand, you have a standalone IM client that you run by clicking an icon or typing in a command. It sits in a (relatively) little window on your desktop. It's out of the way and ready to go when you need it. On the other hand, you have Google chat. You need to open up your web browser (again by clicking an icon or typing in a command). Then sign in to gmail. Then click on the "chat" link. Now you can finally chat with your friends. But you've got a giant screen full of web browser in your way. Now sure, you can minimize the webpage or just have it running in the background with other applications on top, but what makes that any different than any other program? I don't see what all the fuss is about this. What can Google chat do that gaim or trillian can't? There must be something since everyone seems to be so passionately in love with this feature, but for the life of me I can't see it. ; /
- aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great news for most people, but now my company will block gmail. :(
- Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope I can disable it lol. I can't use chat at work, and I don't want it poping up on me when I check my mail.
- CunningLinguist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God I want this for work related communications! REPLAY BACK TO THE SORRY ASS CUSTOMERS SERVICE REPS WHAT THEY REALLY SAID AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE!!!! This would be SBC and DirecTV's worst nightmare dealing with me last month!
- Slackwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome! I actually use Google Talk, on like 5 different PC's at work/home/etc.
This is a feature I've wanted for ages! :D
Diggity Digged! - DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks good, good integration of services.... similar to a digg on here yesterday? but proper google stuff.
Not sure if it will get used over the gtalk client, but integration is always a step in the right direction and chat logs are a must! - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. But like just about everyone else, all of my contacts are on AIM.
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is great news ... finally ! +digg
- jasdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whaddaya know logged in gmail today and saw something out of place, like how i keep starring my messages when i wanted to delete em not so long ago.
anyway, gtalk only been used for voice chat. somehow the voice quality works better than skype.
