- davengineer, on 11/20/2008, -4/+67VLC plays them all anyways.

- jggube, on 11/20/2008, -1/+22VLC is amazing.
- AmyVernon, on 11/20/2008, -1/+18I found this very useful. I've only just started to learn anything about user-made vids on the web and it makes my head hurt. This is a good resource.
- Jams, on 11/21/2008, -2/+18Where is RealMedia? :P
- fhsieh, on 11/21/2008, -2/+14Kinda disappointed to see many diggers plugging VLC. It's versatile, but it's not the fastest player, and in some formats it manages to mangle the image quality. CCCP is the best package (lightweight, best image quality, and highly configurable for those that demand it) when it comes to properly encoded files/containers and modern high-quality codecs (divx, xvid, x/h264). I keep VLC around only for the odd formats/codecs.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -2/+14Pancakes...ARE AWESOME!!!!!! What's a Giz?
- jgregc, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11While VLC is pretty darn good, I have found a lot of occasions where an understanding of the actual codec used is not an option when you want to view and/or edit a given video file (and VLC has to be tweaked to even play it). That is where an article like the one referenced is such a handy guide, since it mentions codecs and containers. If you really want to get into the mechanics, the article does mention more indepth resources as well. Cool, thanks for sharing.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -2/+11I saw pancakes in the thumb and saw Giz and had bad thoughts. ANYWAY, yes VLC plays MOST, but not everything "right out the box". If you install K-Lite codec pack then in addition then you cover most everything. The information in this article comes in handy when your converting and you have to change settings. Good info to have all on one page.
- RyomaNagare, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8"h.263 is designed for sending video over crappy connections. So it's used to encode most Flash video and to send video over mobile networks".
yeah because divx wasn't nearly a game changer codec.
being able to encode movies with near dvd quality on a 654MB file, was what made downloading movies from bittorrent so popular.
I even remember my first 2 movies encoded with "divx :-) 3.11" I think, David Cronemberg's Existenz and Southpark Movie.
I was blown away at the time by the video quality. and filesize. - ivantalboys, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7VLC will do conversion from the GUI too.
- TheThirdWheel, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6MKV (Mastroska) is another open-specification container that you've seen if you've ever downloaded anime
Forget Anime, this is how HD movies are being transferred now. The only trick is getting them to stream to your 360. You can get a program to do a straight conversion, which will take over 12 hours.....or you can download "gotsent" which will seperate the audio and video, demux the audio to 2 channel (no way around this, can't stream 5.1 to the 360 yet) and recombine it, all in about 30 minutes. It's a freeware program so have fun.
Downloading 720P movies and streaming them over a wireless G connection with no stuttering to your main TV = pure win - jireynolds, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6agreed - K-Lite codec pack is a must have in order to play all media formats. i dont care much for vlc
- scratend0788, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7i don't see why digg is so pro vlc.
i like to use it cuz i like the player.
but there are codec packs out there which are better in terms of playing eveything you could think of throwing at them.
also vlc has been giving me errors while playing x264 codec recently. - mickstephenson, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6VLC will do conversion if you use the command line.
- Genma, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6long live mpc. vlc blows imo, great for those who are afraid of obscure codecs, but the gui sucks ass.
- DeathJux, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6While VLC does indeed play everything short of a word file, and rocks the proverbial boxors, sometimes you need to do more with a file than play it... like convert it for your other-OS-challenged friends/bretheren, so the sea of potential file-formats can be a fearsome land of pain and confusion for the ignorant wanderer.
- Tulle, on 11/21/2008, -1/+5MPC > VLC
- Elranzer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3K-Lite Codec + Media Player Classic = :-)
- lebondarken, on 11/21/2008, -2/+5VLC does rock. But when I have to convert, I use ffmpeg and/or handbrake. Both are free. Both kick ass.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg/
http://handbrake.fr/ - mickstephenson, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I thought BBC's new Dirac codec deserved an honourable mention, it's a completely open specification codec like a Theora that doesn't suck.
So if you have and .mkv with Dirac and Vorbis you have a completely free file with no patent encumberment. - crownedgriffin, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4I wish Sony would make the PS3 play MKVs so I could watch my animu on my TV.
- RyomaNagare, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3I'd like to add, that for HD mp4, the AVC core codec, is undisputed, sure its not free unless you get it from some "places" but Being able to watch fullHD content in a celeron computer, really surprised me, I tried it with similar results in a 1.6Ghz Old P4 computer and was able to play 720p content without a s ingle frameskip
- pyrates, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3That's because vlc's h.264 decoder can't do smp, so it can only use one core of your processor. So not enough resources.
- dimizzz, on 11/21/2008, -2/+4in the trashcan of history where it belongs
- graemee, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Except it often messes up .ASS subs.
- sponeil, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3OS-challenged? VLC rocks on all OS's I've ever used.
- McMaster88, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2plz tell how....eh, ill just ***** google it.
- etx313, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2I love crepes.
- misterenigma07, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1-modo
- Stormwern, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1A really really bad way to compress video is to use zip or rar, hate it when people do that, especially on bittorrent where most people wouldn't hold on to both the compressed and uncompressed file just to be able to keep seeding.
- Jones82, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1It's even better when you can just use a long HDMI cable to extend your desktop to your TV
- DeathRay2K, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2VLC has problems with many formats. WMVs, for instance, are problematic. And with several other formats, support is a bit thin. It may play the audio, or the video, or both but doesn't allow video effects, or whatever else.

- jonconnelly, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1yep mpc with k-lite codec pack, plays x264 great. Plays just about everything, all using one codec primarly - ffdshow.
And its not mpc anymore, or at least not what I'm using - MPC Home Cinema - includes internal DXVA decoders for H.264 and VC-1 video. I've watched a 1080p MKV with dts that i ripped from a blu-ray disc on this thing, worked great. - Atomic1fire, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I use it for ogg files, as I can keep it portable,
Only issue is that it closes out of the movie as soon as its over. - scratend0788, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1i like the 400% vollume though, great for quiet laptops.
also movie rips are sometimes really quiet - mickstephenson, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/18/how-to-get-tv-s ...
