- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25...and still you look like an idiot....
- habu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The Blue Angels use a USMC C-130f. Not a USAF C-5. The C-5 is MUCH larger then the C-130 you saw. (High Res photo off the Blue Angels' website http://www.blueangels.navy.mil/images/photos/hi_res_05.jpg )
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14His point was that this it totally out of context for Digg content, which it is.
Maybe Kevin Rose wants to eventually branch out into general news and entertainment, but for now, Digg is a tech/science social bookmarking site. For some reason, articles on Bush and Iraq always seem to make it to the front page, and every now and then something like this (which is why it can only be labeled in the "links" category...there isn't a proper category for it).
When articles are out of context to the reason why most people come here, it degrades the quality of Digg overall. - zoglesby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just to show you the diffrence in the two aircraft here is a picture.

Also a fun fact, A C-5 can fit a C-130 inside of its cargo bay if you were to chop the wings off. Take a look at the wiki page for more fun facts about FRED.

- theinfobox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8There was a C-5 crash at Ramstein AB Germany in the build up to Gulf War I. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/c-5-loss.htm
- deleteYourslf, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18I'm sorry but this article is not exactly digg-worthy - a more relevant story might describe how the technology of the jet prevented its passengers from becoming worm food. No digg.
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9My brother used to work on these. He said the pilots were damaging them all the time: hard landings, screwups and such. Not as major as this but nevertheless.
- jgstew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Perhaps it was transporting a Stargate.
...Sorry, I had to. But hey, that would make it diggworthy. - zoglesby, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I work on them at Dover!
- rwelsh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Cool article...but this isn't technology related, as near as I can tell. No digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+620 minutes from me.
And yeah, this is the biggest thing to happen in Delaware since, something.. - MeatFarley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No mention of the 1990 crash at Ramstein...
http://rustyknight98.com/C5/C5.htm - dlichteman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5To see that takeoff.....and some cool footage....
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2616164089359654579&q=blue angels rocket&pl=true - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Anyone got a tech angle on this story? Just wondering, since it's Digg and all..
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure if the C-5 had been going nearly straight down or had run into a heavily reinforced building things would have been a bit different.
But no, it landed wings-level in a grass field.
This speaks volumes about the ability of conspiracy theorists to use ridiculously poor logic. - deleteYourslf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah but the article didn't say anything about that, which is why it shouldn't be on digg.com
- dengar69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2+DIGG for the pilot who landed the monster. He can fly me around anytime!
- kris.mallory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2im a loadmast with the 326. friends of mine were on that flight and i'm glad that they are ok.
it was a 326 crew. with a few from the 709 and an active duty Crew chief. thats all i can say about who was on.
the crew did a hell of a job putting her down in the safest manner possible and getting everyone out of the plane. - jclstone, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I work on them at Travis as well.
- cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow good to hear everyone is alive and not severely injured. Those planes are gigantic! Quite a feat of engineering that they actually can fly.
- rakista, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4You would have to attach like an atlas rocket to a C-5 to make it go vertical.
- gollo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't call them hunks of junks if they have only had 5 incidents in their 35+ year history. I would say that is actually pretty good all things considered.
- MetalRemains, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2never good when a plane crashes, looks like a good save by the pilots
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2220x168, wow that picture cnn provides sure looks incredible on my monitor. So much better than a television picture.
- zoglesby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CNN is saying that it was a Gaurd unit, but thats not what I am hearing, but I have not been to work yet to find anything out, and I don't think that I can give out any info about it when I do, its not my place to say anthing about it.
- wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7So much for sensabilities. One usually wants to pat themselves on the back in the privacy of thier own room.
- habu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ commiecat hey not a prob, they are both huge and very cool aircraft. The C-130 Fat Albert demo is an amazing part of the show. If the Blue Angels are in your area go see them (and your tax $ at work), they are amazing.
- DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That's the difference between landing speed and nearly Mach 1 at work.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This isnt too far from me... is this what it takes for Delaware to make the news?
- tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah i live near dover. i see them come in for landings all day. they are truly amazing. they look like they are going to fall out of the sky.
- IFLYC5z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haven't heard which squadron was onboard yet? I'd like to talk to someone inside. I was an Flt Eng for ten years in the 9th AS at Dover. I need way more info than CNN is giving.
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@habu - I stand corrected! Thanks - guess I got my Cs mixed up. :)
- zoglesby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are Guard bases that have C-5's. Stewart has them and so does Memphis.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe that is normally true, however the C5 is a huge plane designed to carry tanks and such. Under full capacity, a plane of this size is going to have trouble if an engine goes out. They regularly carry 50,000 lbs of gear. That's pretty impressive, IMHO: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-5_Galaxy
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ironic. Death digg by Satan.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember flying on these as a civilian (MAC flights). The passenger section is just behind the wing. No wonder everyone survived.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool! I'll keep refreshing CNN all day and post all stories with technology in them. Maybe they'll have one about vibrators or guns or manufacturing.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"since when is aerospace not technology"
Yeah, but the story isn't about aerospace. It's current events. Maybe if it were a story about how the analysis of the crash lead to safety improvements in the C-5 design it would be on-topic.
You can make up tenuous reasons for just about anything to relate it to technology, nice try though. - commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31) I'm sorry for the C-5/C-130 mixup upthread - although I do appreciate the cool links to pics & video of the C-130 takeoff. :)
2) This is posted under "links" and I don't see anything wrong w/ it being here. If you think there is no tech on that plane, or that no tech was used in figuring out how to get something that BIG into the sky (disregarding the fact that this one appears to have fallen from the sky) then you live a sheltered life. Engineering feats, even when they fail, are usually tech-related.
-commiecat - tdkme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6isn't travis in vacaville CA? or is that the one in IL? either or i used to live both places. my father was in the air force!
- marmaduke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm surprised it didn't miss the state. (Burn at Del)
But very lucky for all those on board that survived. Any news as far as survivor numbers go? - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We should have pulled the troops out of Delaware a year ago!
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well gollo you have never been out on the flight line at 0200 trying to find a fuel leak in one of the engines while standing on a B-5 stand getting wind burn from the motering engine. Meanwhile when your done and R squared the component that was broke all of a sudden the plane wont except external power, Call out E and E time for them to have fun. Only to find a hydro leak another C-5 grounded for days.
- me45678, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was an AMP aircraft, and it was the 349th reserve unit. I am one of the test members for the AMP testing--just so you know, AMP is an upgrade to the avionics system. Basicall, instead of switches and dials, there are computer screens in the cockpit. Do a search for C-5 AMP in google, and you will find more info about it. It IS technical information. I can't say much more, but it is quite funny to see everyone speculate.
- Phazed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i read about this on cnn hours before it reached the front page on digg, no digg
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Especially when you drive by the base and don't see it getting ready to land and it flies overhead.
Quite an experience.. - SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3C-5's are the worst planes I have ever worked on. I was a jet troop on these hunks of junk for 4 years.
- dracolich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if it was pilot error. ;)
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2no digg
