- digichris, on 10/10/2007, -18/+73Video Ads suck =[ Mainly because you can't skip them. Hopefully some l33t hackers will come up with a workaround for this, since youtube is pretty big. AdBlocker Plus Video Edition FTW!
- ParaSwarm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46What's the problem? Google bought YouTube for billions of dollars and made some regular Joe's like you and I filthy rich. Usually, when you make an investment like that, you seek to make profit off your investment. Should Google just run an ad-free YouTube for your convenience and viewing pleasure? If YOU owned YouTube, would you offer an ad-free experience? Considering the millions of dollars in bandwidth, personnel, and server costs each month?
Last time I checked, I don't have to pay money to view videos on YouTube. If you're complaining about ads, then you'd probably make a bad entrepreneur. Chances are you have a Myspace account anyway, so you should be oblivious to ads by now. =D - Godlike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Aahhhh, the good olde fayshund "self-pwning" is the sweet, sugar coated confection of the net.
WTF dude? Self pwning FTW! - seks03, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30FTW= for the win.... not WTF
- huskerdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26The ads are really unobtrusive and there's no sound involved. They only come up on (corporate) users that opt-in to the program. There's no pre-load, there's no additional buffer time. If you're going to have ads, this is about the best way to do it.
- cfinke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21The TubeStop Firefox extension gives you the ad-free version of the video: http://www.chrisfinke.com/2007/08/22/tubestop-also-stops-youtube-ads/
- MikeonTV, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20I have a feeling this was just a reason to post that women crushing grapes video again.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -13/+30You guys are big whiners whenever it comes to any sort of advertising. That's capitalism for you, I have a site with ads too and I also try to make some money doing it, I'm sure any of you would do the same.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Google thinks the ads will be unobtrusive? Have they never watched television?
I hope google at least prevents the overlay from making sound. Those ads for "Damages" on FX were annoying the crap out of me with their exploding sound whenever they'd pop up. - vandy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12You can close these and they disappear after 10 seconds. It's not that bad.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Guess I should RTFA before posting.. I wish they would just show the ad after the video, instead of DURING the video. That's terrible! That's unacceptable! Guess it's time to find another video sharing site.
- aniescier, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10These ads will make more money for google; and google has a history of re-investing its money in the (internet) community; and i don't watch youtube. so, this sounds great to me! let the highschoolers be exposed to 10 minutes more a day of ads, on top of their usual few hours, and google will have some more cash to lobby governments for the pro-geek cause.
- chrislee149, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry.
- jwcelement, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Don't expect to make any money then. Advertising is the best way to cash in on anything, in any medium. No one likes ads, but its how to get some financial gain from something otherwise costing you a lot of money.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7you didn't read the article did you
- jtbndy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9While I obviously hate ads as much as the next person, at least its not the type of ad that plays before the video for 15 seconds.
- lansuggs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Youtube abs: hidden under many layers.
- chrislee149, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So you mean to say that we're not safe, then?
- echolyean, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So many times I've gone to watch a news clip or something and first the 15 second commercial plays, and comes through without a hitch. Then the clip I actually WANTED to see starts up and is either too choppy to watch or doesn't play at all. So basically, they get their ad in, but I don't get to see the video. CNN.com used to be really bad like that, but it looks like they've improved since updating their site not too long ago.
- imbob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5just having advertisement is gonna suck now i have to buffer a AD damn it >.
- GeekyGerge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Ha!
- purpmint008, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I believe the ads are only going to be in corporate-provided videos (trailers, talk-shows, etc.).
Not the types of videos that are linked to through the video section in digg.
Can someone correct or confirm me? Will ads show in "personal" videos? - Glitchr, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10So now Google is going to kill YouTube? What are they stupid? Their own video service failed and they paid a ton for YouTube. Now they are going to change it drastically and eventually make it irrelevant. Here is a little factoid for you. Most video makers take great efforts to frame and edit an image to make the most of the screen space. If you think videomakers are going to like BS ads on top of their video, you are crazy. Will it matter for Webcam crap? Probably not. The good news is that you cant swing a cat without hitting a different web video outlet. Metacafe.com, Break.com, Ifilm.com, Gofish.com, Liveleak.com, and Dailymotion.com just come to mind without research. Some or most of these have ads but they don't compromise the integrity of the video. Click this. Click that.. JUST PLAY THE DANG VIDEO. If they can't make enough on the adverts on the main page or linking pages, then they are greedy fools.
- CaptShmo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6as long as these ads don't show up in embedded videos, i'm okay with it.
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I don't really have a problem with them, they are much more unobtrusive than they could have been and they can be closed whenever you want. Sites like YouTube cannot be a free ride, so I'm fine with them showing a banner. It's no different to TV shows (how many of the torrents you download of a show have an ad banner appear occasionally? Most I reckon)
- NickDG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Goodby Youtube . . .
- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -17/+19Sounds fine to me. This is how I've been saying YouTube should do ads since early last year. If you really have a problem with these kinds of ads you are just being difficult for the sake of being difficult, so whatever.
- derdrache, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Probably because they used some sort of flash implementation for the ad (ads seem to be on the newest tech they can) and then used something antiquated or unreliable for the actual video. (Quality usually suffers too).
- aahpandasrun, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Youtube already blows. It has the widest selection of videos, but their terms of service are awful. One infraction on a video gets your account deleted. Also, their servers barely work. I don't know how many times I've had to refresh youtube videos because the servers crapped out (on multiple computers with different internet connections) Google is huge, buy some new youtube servers please.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Do you guys forget they make money off of their text and picture based ads on the site already. *****, how much more ***** needs to be flashed at me.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I don't really care.. I mean, if it's like revver's system where it shows the ads at the end of the video, that doesn't bother me at all. They have to make money some how..
- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Read the article
- adminmatt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3HAHA
epic fail FTW - PatrickBrown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Exactly, that is why cable is free. Oh wait. Well at least paying for cable still means no ads. Damn, how come I keep getting this wrong?
I do not mind the youtube ads though as I rarely watch a video from youtube... maybe five videos / month max. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You could try selling T-Shirts
or have a donation system set up
if that does not work then go to ugly nasty ads - FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Holy crap. Someone actually read the article! Comment dugg!
- jacquesm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2well, they did the same to dejanews, why not do the same to youtube ?
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No one says it's a free ride. They make a ***** killing off of their text based ads already, how much more ***** is needed. You-Tube has obviously done ok so far.
- mookieXL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In world of corporations, there's no such thing as enough money.
- almostdone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Am I the only one that thinks YouTube totally blows?
- r3bol, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I use flashblocker (firefox plugin), which does the job for other sites. You can specify which flash movies you want and which to block.
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I wan't paid for each person seeing my video then
- xmuzik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2youtube jumped the shark along time ago
- Aleister76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why don't they add the ***** ads to their service?
- Aleister76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I agree. I'm not using youtube anymore if they pull this bs. http://stage6.divx.com ftw. Better quality, and allows you to download. Plus the new sandisk player supports dibx videos. No more ***** converting for iPood.
- Lawrencediggs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ladies and Gentlemen, The fall of YouTube.....
- FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4and you should come work for me. I won't pay you though, is that ok?
- Aleister76, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do both.
- locojones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes. Once they start running ads, the lawsuits will come claiming that YouTube gave up it's safe harbor protection under the DMCA by monetizing the content. Now it opens itself up to real copyright infringement suits, which will ultimately spell the end of YouTube, and we can finally be rid of videos so bad only America's Funniest Home Videos would run them.
- kuvittelija, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well we do have alternatives, like Dailymotion.com, share your videos at a resolution of 640×480 (Youtube uses only 320×240). Also, audio on Dailymotion site is coded 96 kbit/s in stereo when Youtube only uses 64kbit/s MONO...
So, no need to be sad, just move on and use better alternatives! -
