- redrock34, on 10/11/2007, -12/+69I can do 200MPH on the Autobahn but god forbid I look at "dangerous" pictures on Flickr.

You mean like Digg users did over the whole 09F9 thing? ;)
/sarcasm - nobogeys217, on 10/11/2007, -2/+42And as we all know, video games are the cause of all violence...not bad parenting, hell no!

- notantspants, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21I find it hilarious that you can all take the piss out the Germans but as soon as you criticise the Good Old USA of America, or Micro$oft or Ubuntu you get dugg deeeeeeeeeeeep down.
You lot are a bunch of ***** hypocrites.
And I hate the ***** American spell checker on this thing (funny thing though, Micro$oft doesn't show up as a spelling mistake)!!!!!!!! - dirka, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Censorship macht mich böse!!!

- Aldhelm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Why is it that every single that Germany is in focus. Every idiot makes jokes about the Nazis. Hey GUESS WHAT? German history did not begin at 1933 and it didn't end at 1945 ok? If your going to make fun of the germans. Realise this.
1: If your white then there is a good chance that you have german ancestry now matter how small. German-Americans are the largest ethnic group in USA.
2: Your writing and probably speaking in a germanic. Since English is one of them.
3: If it wasn't for German Scientists we would have advanced this far.
This is coming from a african who lives in UK. - vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14If video games are the cause of violence, then Hitler sure must have played a lot of video games as a kid... Back in 1900... Before even television...
Oh wait... Maybe he just played a lot of violent board games then? - fquednau, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yupp, I have been quite amazed at the commenting here, in terms of what you guys think of Germany. However, it's basically the same here in Germany - USA isn't really a favourite. Typical stereotypes would be: Bunch of shallow minded patriots that managed to re-elect a first-class fire-starter into the presidential office a second time. It's all too easy to throw out a bunch of pathetic, shallow cliches without any justifications.
Apart from that - Germany has a law stating that porn should not be distributed to minors. Flickr may have pictures that can be classified as such. AFAIK, Flickr has no age verification system (if http://vowe.net/archives/008538.html is right, which explains the whole issue more concise). - Vnezh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10The German thought police, raided secondlife, for cartoon sex people. Tiny little TOONs, illegal in Germany. I should clarify that both of the real people behind the toons were quite above the age of 18. But they showed Sex in the City uncut right after the Simpsons at like 6:30 in the afternoon. EXPLAIN the logic please. ;)
- illu45, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Yeah, must've been chess, that game's a menace to society!

Wasn't that the exact same attitude the world had when they DID do something the last time? - postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8back in college my week started around Wednesday , sometimes Thursdays.
- luchid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7To those of you who "don't get it":
Flickr has been restricting access to photos marked as mature by the safesearh filter to adults that have set their language as German on the flickr site. These adults have already had an age verification check when they signed up for a Yahoo! account and then when they had to produce a credit card to pay for their pro accounts.
Flickr is now saying that, basically, their hands are tied, because in order to comply with German laws they must make "offensive" images unavailable to German members. This is a fallacy. First of all nudity and erotic photos are allowed without any sort of constraint. Pornography -as in genitalia in action- is not, and people are not complaining about it because that kind of material wasn't allowed on flickr's TOS to begin with. Fact is most German porn sites are in compliance with the law by simply having an age verification method also seen in most US-based porn sites. Flick already has one of those at signup, and if they wanted to they could make another one by asking again on a simple form or using some of the government approved age verification systems like the one by the Deustche Post.
Summing up this could have been solved days ago if flickr staff wanted to. Instead they made these changes without any notice, and when the outrage begun they simply kept quiet -which is the worst thing to do, like you guys recall from the 09 f9 incident here. - Speed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Dude, Godwin's Law. "There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically 'lost' whatever debate was in progress."
Plus WWI was becuase Germany gave a blank cheque offering to Austria for help, and so, when Austria declared war, Germany had to. And WWII was a direct result of WWI. German was the scape goat for WWI, so they got really hammered, and thats why Hitler got elected. - ThreeGs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The longer flickr waits to respond the more harm they do themselves, whatever their action is.
- zetanas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6no comment...hehe anyway, i like the way they, the Germans response to the censorship of Flickr.

- SuperSloth, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8IIRC, Yahoo Germany did this years ago as a result of the German government complaining about Nazi paraphernalia (illegal in Germany, authentic or otherwise, AFAIK) being available through Yahoo's websites.
Sorry, Germany, you did it to yourselves. - Drevor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@fquednau (#7220127) said:Apart from that - Germany has a law stating that porn should not be distributed to minors. Flickr may have pictures that can be classified as such.
I have yet to see images that qualify as 18+ porn (read: intercourse). All I have ever seen is nudity and according to JuSchG §14(II) you need to flag such content using the w3c PICS standard which allows filtering by a parental software on THE CLIENT SIDE. You are NOT required to check the users age, let alone censor such content completely. - carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5it is their site, they do own it, but they have customers paying to use it. the main reason flickr is as big as it is falls on very similar reasons to why digg is bigger than reddit or netscape. It was the first site to allow heavy emphasis on social contact in it's format (photos) and as such it has built up a large community of people. It also has one of, if not the nicest photo site interfaces out there, so switching to a competitor leaves you with at least a bad taste in your mouth.
People have been disliking the way flickr's being run by yahoo since the whole "old skool" forced login crossover. yahoo also has a pretty nasty history of censorship with china and now germany. here's to hoping they don't make things any worse or we might have to switch to another site soon. - shreyans, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm in Thailand and I'm more annoyed about the blocking of:
YouTube
Metacafe
Mashable - dotdean, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5http://blog.assbach.de/2007/06/14/the-flickr-censorship-drama-my-personal-view/
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4i dugg you up, i don't mind a first hand take on something pertaining to what's going on.
- tiax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3speaking of pussy, why is it that there are two versions of Giants (PC game)? The US one, with violence included (but no nudity!) and the DE one, without violence but also without bras on some characters?
- DeflatorMouse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"The German translators had made a very average job, none of what I call 'the spirit of Flickr', the coolness, the friendliness was to be found there."
His first mistake was presuming that Flickr ever had a "spirit" to begin with. It was created to make money for its founders; now that it has done so, they have no need to put forth any effort in continuing the pretense of "spirit."
There are other photo-sharing communities out there. Perhaps their names don't have enough missing letters in them to establish the required level of "Web 2.0 hipness" that some people think are required these days, but they do exist. - LaueOfficer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thank you.
- Skooma714, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Germany: Good food, good music, good products
Bad government, bad women. Some of the most snotty and aloof I've ever seen. - TheRealStyro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, that explains all the strange 'censor' graphics uploaded by various accounts. I thought it was about the Chinese banning of Flickr, but German censoring would make more sense.
Yahoo needs to get their act together and start being an American (USA) company again and stop with these censoring operations. Let the government/companies inside freedom limited countries filter Internet feeds. - mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Some people think this only happens in Mexico
- anarchistuk, on 08/11/2009, -0/+1The Germans will do what they always have done, boycott and produce a better equivalent. Like they did to Paypal.

Hell, you can bet whenever I meet you, I'll be snotty and aloof.
Jerk.
On topic: Censorship by German government, my butt! As far as I understood, flickr was just too slow or thrifty to adapt to German laws and is now reacting with a shot gun although a fly swatter would be more appropriate.
Gaaah, must..... stop.... reading these threads that provoke stereotypical comments... make me.... soooo.... angry :-/// - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3This reminds me of the german tour guide piece on Family Guy.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hSvRVwXnfL0 - mercurysquad, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Also the case with Google. Even if you turn safe search off, some images are still filtered according to who knows what criteria. Here's what the text says: "Note: You have selected the least restrictive filter for your results. Images not compliant with German law will still be filtered. You may, however, see some images that you consider inappropriate for minors. If minors are using your browser we suggest enabling strict filtering."
