- monkeyrun, on 10/11/2007, -4/+458The real crime is charging 29.99 to install iTunes.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -5/+353"Who knew that when you hand over your computer to a repair technician, you could be giving a stranger a veritable Pandora's box?"
Who *didn't* know that.... - dunezone, on 10/11/2007, -15/+360I don't know whats worse, that geek squad is stealing your porn or that their working on your computer.
- popsumer, on 10/11/2007, -11/+300Video is work-safe, btw.
- briansearles, on 10/11/2007, -11/+247Porn on desktop? I call that fair game.
- trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -12/+185Huh, I don't know what "porn" the guy had, but I sure as hell would have snagged a copy of that background.
So did they record via software? If so... Its kinda sad the techie didn't go figure out why the hard drive was constantly clicking away.. Even if its out side the request I always take a quick look for signs of viral activity... a video recorder running in the background would sure give me the feeling that a virus was running by at least 3 symptoms... - lithuin, on 10/11/2007, -7/+173I can't argue about Geek Squad being a rip, but your reasoning is flawed. Some people don't have the time or inclination to learn how to fix their PC.
Do you ever take your car to the mechanic? Learn to fix your own *****, it's not that hard.
Ever go to the dentist? Learn to fix your own *****, it's not that hard.
Ever have a rectal exam? Learn to fix your own *****, it's not that hard. ;)
The point is, the great thing about living in a society is that not everyone has to know how to do everything. Welcome to society! Population - A lot. I got bored counting around 700. - beerbaronstatic, on 10/11/2007, -28/+165im in ur pc, stealin' ur porn
- Lane, on 10/11/2007, -6/+128i am not surprised in the least bit that this happens. I would have expected him to check for tax records and personal information too
- orangester, on 10/11/2007, -7/+117Why doesn't he just surf the free sites like normal people?
- Xizer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+98And that, gentlemen, is why people do not go to unprofessional computer "repair" businesses such as yours. You're hired to fix someone's computer and you delete their porn? What the *****? I can guarantee you, if you pulled that ***** with me, I would not be embarrassed to file a complaint about that. You weren't hired to delete peoples' porn, you were hired to fix a problem. Fix the problem and leave their ***** alone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+77My hard drives do not leave my room.
- orlyfactor, on 10/11/2007, -38/+110Geek squad is such a rip anyway. Learn to fix your own *****, it's not that hard...
- darkstar949, on 10/11/2007, -4/+73Stupid question, but wouldn't it be illegal if not at least unethical to delete the files one someone's computer? Even if you do have a blanket "We may delete files on your computer as needed" statement, deleting the porn just for the sake of it being porn seems more like enforcing your - or your companies - morality than anything else.
Your boss should have just did a generic "don't leave the monitors on customer computers on when not in use" statement. - Bakkster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+66Geek Squad isn't techies anymore. It seems it would be pretty easy to catch them at just about anything.
- bovester, on 10/11/2007, -30/+94I worked in a repair shop for two years. We never copied stuff off their hard drive for personal use, but several times there were people who had slideshows of their "My Pictures" folder as their screensaver, and GUESS WHAT WAS INSIDE?
After our boss mistakenly "caught" us 3 or 4 times "looking at" the porn, we just started deleting it. Anytime we saw porn, we deleted it. Who the hell is going to file a complaint about that?
Exactly.
Long story short, don't keep personal files on your computer if you're n00b enough to have to take it to one of these places. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+66nah, I was on Geek Squad a couple of years ago. We just did a quick porn sweep on most computers. It passes the time while having to deal with the stupid Best Buy politics (BBY Management sucks!)
- computergod, on 10/11/2007, -2/+62Everyone knows the first step to fixing a computer is to do a search for *.jpg We are just keeping the world safe from child predators. You do want to keep children safe, right?
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+63Meh, I think just about any comp. tech will do this. I know in my time of doing that sort of work I had run across quite a bit. I watched some kickass training/war videos from an apache helicopter on a military guys comp, webcam videos, priests "collections" on their PC's (were actually teen girls, not boys), and other fun stuff. When you sit and remove spyware all day it is a nice break. I know of one shop where they have a NAS drive just for storing good stuff they come across. Not saying it is right, just it is what it is.
- sacherjj, on 10/11/2007, -3/+62You realize this was a Geek Squad guy, right? I don't think it is even fair to everyone else to call them techie. Gives a bad name to techies.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 10/11/2007, -3/+52Um, perhaps every technician's lab where they hire a red-blooded American male geek to do work is a place where this sort of "trap" would work.
Next, we will discover that, surprise surprise, Geeks even play with themselves on occasion.
I think everyone sending in a hard drive for repair KNOWS that someone is going to investigate; "Zoo animals and me.avi" If human nature weren't what it was -- we wouldn't have the internet, and more people would pay for a restoration of their crashed hard drive rather than starting over from scratch again. - g4blows, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48Who keeps porn on their desktop?
- LanceHardenburg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47@bovester
Hey Mr. computer repair genious, why don't you just disable the screensaver while you work on the computer and then just turn it back on when you are finished? Your story sounds like bs anyway. - NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+53Who the ***** DOESNT take free porn when they can? I mean its not like he is taking your only copy of playboy. Hell half my mp3 collection comes from pc's iv worked on.
- qwertylicious, on 10/11/2007, -14/+56To beat other grammar Nazis:
You meant to use "they're", not "their".
Now digg me down. And not the reverse-psychology actually-digg-me-up kind. - tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -4/+46You and I both know that installing iTunes is just slightly easier than fixing a cracked engine block.
- Crispin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41If you have morals why would you charge someone $30 to install iTunes?
- BlackCow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Ha ha, this is why is good to be a geek, you don't have to trust geek wanabees with your computer.
- Slungsolow, on 10/11/2007, -13/+47other than the 3 smokin chicas thin cotton t-shirts... yeah.
- mirzar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34we do this at the apple store
we keep the pictures that people take on photobooth (even though they might delete it) - fowleryo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32he probably wouldn't know what to do with tax records... contrary to knowing EXACTLY what to do with the porn
- indicas, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Maybe he gets a better whack knowing he saw the person in real life?
Pure speculation, lmao. - Kookami, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32My vote there is the sting, I always just assumed computer techs raiding customer's porn was a given, y'know, a job perk.
- joltjake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32who the ***** takes a computer to a repair place to install a program? Did you catch the receipt? it cost them 30bucks, ***** that.
- ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31Funny, how it's called stealing in this case.
- philconow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30$29 for installing itunes, I think I am going to start "fixing computers" and retire at 25.
- debuggercll, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32Change your settings to have all comment trees expanded out.
- Dested, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Yeah, tell that to their boss.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29When I worked in Geek Squad, other agents would grab all sorts of ***** on their USB drives.. sometimes entire My Pictures folders. Looking back on it, those naked girlfriends probably wouldn't be too happy to know some nerd is getting his jollies off to your pictures.
It really surprised me how many naked girlfriends there are.. - mike000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Todays lesson, don't put porn in a folder on your desktop while taking a computer in to get repaired.
- PopcornDave, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31Hmmmm...
I saw two and a couger. - killdashnine, on 10/11/2007, -5/+32How pathetic, but not really a crime (particularly when there's a real gray-area around pr0n anyway. The real crime is that people take their computers to Geek Squad to begin with.
- mroboy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+34oh the stuff I've found on computers I've worked on. I only made "backups" of the really hot ones.
- castleking, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Not that I like Geek Squad, but to be fair, the blame here should not be placed on Best Buy and Geek Squad. This was just a renegade "agent" exploiting his position, which happens at any company. Obviously this is against the company policy, and while I disagree with many of the way Geek Squad does things, this is not their burden to bear. I hope that whoever caught this guy reported him to the branch's manager, or called corporate, if not he could be setting up opportunities for this agent to exploit other users minimal computer abilities.
- Zippo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29Since the "customer" wanted to have something done as brainless as iTunes installed, I'd say the employee just assumed the owner of the computer was also just as brainless... and didn't think twice about any programs like a desktop recorder that might be running.
Sure, it's not professional behavior by any means, but all the guy did was copy some pr0n - not anything of real importance or secrecy... under all circumstances (minus this instance), whatever an employee does is completely unseen... so of course they know they can get away with whatever. If I was tech I'd probably snoop around a little, too.
Guess he'll think twice before poking his nose around in someone else's computer... well, if he gets another job as a tech, that is. - f4nt0m4s, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30lmao...i'm amazed that people are surprised that the geek squad - a group of tech guys (keyword: GUYS) - are interested in finding pictures of naked women on your computer. no *****! guys spend at least 85% of their life thinking about sex. this should come as no surprise and a rule of thumb (a rule of logic if anything) should be: delete/backup all your personal ***** before sending it to big companies like best buy! if some random dude and his hot girlfriend wanted me to fix their computer i'd be looking for videos on it too.
- paintballboi07, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Agreed. A good porn collection can take quite awhile to collect. I can't believe you would think you have the right to delete it.
- rheaume, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Someone setting a trap?
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22It's nothing to do with being cool, hip, or a know-it-all, it's just common sense.
Unless you didn't realise you'd filled your PC with a plethora of private information, which seems unlikely. -
