- DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37leather macbook pro laptop bag. $200.
- PhysicsTheory, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21People that read the article would see that Gateway anounced this machine based on a processor that Intel was not scheduled to announce until April 16th. That is why they "jumped the gun".
The new processor has a TDP (thermal disapation power) rating of 5.5W. Standard Laptop processors generally use 35W. This leads to a full featured laptop with about an 8 hour battery life. That is why people care. It is good for business people who travel a lot. - TKDEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Under-clocking does not lower the chips core voltage even though it does lower the power consumpion. A CMOS chip will have power loss proportional to the frequency due to the charging and discharging of the gate capacitors in the FETs, but there is also a power loss due to current that is not dependent on frequency (P=IV). In a 60 nM process this can be a pretty large of power dissipation. So, lowering the supply voltage can allow a processor to consume less power, but run at the same frequency.
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Apparently it's an underclocked Core Solo with a new name"
No, it's not a matter of underclocking. It's a matter of operating at the SAME clock speed but with a lower voltage. - oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9" Is it the slower 1.06GHz and 1.3GHz speeds or the 'ultra low voltage' designation? "
It's got to be the ULV designation. Although this is the worst kept secret in the industry. ULV versions have been announced or are expected of Intel's entire line of Solo and Duo chips. I doubt this will have any effect whatsoever on Intel's plans. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16"leather macbook pro laptop bag. $200."
This is APPLE were talking about....I think you mean a $500 apple notebook bag that would go for about $200-$300 from anyone else. - eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wrong reply
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7*cough* I know... you'd have to read the article for this:
"The NX100 features Intel's Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Core Solo U1300 CPU. Interestingly enough, Intel has not announced this processor yet and the press embargo is still several weeks away -- April 16th. In the past, Intel has moved up the launch dates of its processors when a major system builder releases the specifications early." - sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've actually been pretty impressed with Gateways higher-end offerings lately (saw one computer for a little over 800 bucks with an Athlon 64x2 4200+, gig of memory, tuner card, windows MCE, nvidia on-board graphics, and PCI-Ex16 slot open.) HP's doing halfway decent these days as well, and is currently my recomendation for off-the-shelf computers (hell, my gaming rig started as an HP M7330N -- nearly identical to the gateway I mentioned, but 50 bucks more expensive for a better tuner card and Radeon Xpress 200 on-board graphics -- when my old computer's mobo melted; added a Radeon x1800XT 512MB and this thing is pretty *****' powerful now.)
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(a little off topic....but still...)
Still choked by BIOS.
Please Microsoft....support EFI and help move computing forward!

Benefits:
OS independant drivers
Faster boot times
Dumping a 20 year old BIOS system
(end rant) - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even Vista isn't going to support EFI for 32-bit machines at launch, so why do you think any hardware vendor will embrace it?
So, for now, if you want an EFI laptop or desktop your best bet is to get a Core Duo Mac and hack XP to install on it. - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like Gateway stole Apple's thunder. ;)
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Benefits: OS independant drivers"
This is exactly why MS will fight EFI. Windows may not be the most technically advanced OS but where it really shines is that it has a giant library of drivers (at least the 32 bit variety). It's no coincidence that they only support EFI in their 64 bit versions of the OS. By keeping drivers OS dependent, they get to basically dictate to the hardware manufacturers. Look at DirectX or attend a WinHEC if you doubt MS's desire to control the OEM's. Or just look at how MS (a software company) basically dictates to all the hardware manufacturers how to build their systems. Nothing is stopping Dell from building an EFI system with a CSM. They just don't.
Microsoft, (like any other corporation), is not in a hurry to accelerate it's own demise. The hardware lock-in is one of the means that it has at it's disposal to ensure that this doesn't occur. There are others (dotNET, DirectX, WinFS) but that's another conversation. - totalnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CNet got their hands on it. Here is a video review of it.

- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gateway = eMachine
Look it up. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When does Conroe come out @_@!
- infiniteparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes the Core Solo is out. Its in my MacMini. :)
Think the diff is the speed.... - zigman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw the mention of the other Gateway this morning on Small Laptops: http://www.small-laptops.com/2006/03/30/announced-gateway-e-100mb/ and I hadn't heard of this CPU before.
PhysicsTheory said it would have a long battery life (8 hours). Could this CPU be the one that's supposed to ship later in the year in the UMPCs, and that's supposed to give them eight hours of battery life? I'm wanting a UMPC, but I was going to hold off until the second generation this year with a different CPU, and I'm curious if this is the CPU that's supposed to ship in those (I didn't hear specifics on CPUs for UMPCs later in the year, other than "8 hours of battery life"). The ones now are supposedly 2-4 hours (not bad for the size, but.....) - jdmiller82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought the Core Solo was already out? Isnt there a Mac Mini configuration with a Core Solo in it? How is this different?
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I didn't know Gateway was still around. Dell has taken over the PC market
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Review (I think):
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1943678,00.asp?kc=PCRSS02129TX1K0000530 - amazed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How so?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Yeah, havn't we know about the Yonah chips for awhile? I suppose that the story meant that Gateway jumped the gun on the new speeds (1.06GHz and 1.2GHz). Atleast now we know that the Macbook Pro is competively priced.
- wael, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1it would make sense for apple to use these processors in its macbooks (new ibooks).
if they announce them april 1st, they would also be "jumping the gun" on intel!
maybe intel will announce these alongside apple with their new buddy steve jobs. - nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6I guess we're that much closer to a new iBook now. Can't wait.
- mattrmcg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0looks pretty thin...i have a gateway laptop, pretty old...should put it down (anyone have a gun?)
- amazed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3ZZZZZzzzzzzz slow day on digg I see
FLAME ON! - eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2you are correct, I used the wrong word.
- amazed, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3These things do not happen 'Accidentally'.
They know exactly what they're saying when they say it and the reason for saying it when they do.
NO digg. This is spam. - tobb555, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6you mean hippies
- twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Sound like hippies to me
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1You know you love 'em, or at least what they create :)... Unless of course you hate all musical, film, Tv and written media... in which case... thats fair ;)
Some might say that Windows based PC's are used primarily for Consumption now , Mac's are used for creation. Not saying thats a bad thing, just what happens when so many consumers own PC's. They Consume more than they create, which is different than say, 15 years ago... Mac knows their Niche Market... but I think that may start to change and grow - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Wow huge secret that they let out where Intel was going to be releasing "low voltage" Core Solo processors.... no one would've guessed especially since they previously had "low voltage" Pentium M processors.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2yeah, I read it, but you kow as well as I that sometimes its marketing that comes up with that stuff, and the hardware isn't anything new...
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -18/+10April 1st! Cant wait to see what Apple announces...
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I don't get the story here at all..
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Isn't it a bit odd that Digg has stories about E-Machines & Gateway (same company) offering "new" products? Smells like SPAM.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2no, I mean musicians, communications folk and film makers, some of them might be hippies, but they arent synonymous ;)
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Apparently it's an underclocked Core Solo with a new name... Gateway announced it as a new CPU, not sure if theres any true difference tho...
- jonecat, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4If you underclock any proc. enough, like down to 1.06Ghz, of course it will be low voltage compared to a 1.5Ghz+ proc. How is this news? We have had low power single core 1ghz proc for a long time.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3but said bag will last longer, and look prettier, and be generally more productive/useful for artistic types ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1if your gonna get a processer speed that slow might as well get a handheld device, cuz you won't be able to much else besides surf and type a few documents on either. Plus it would be much more portable.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Is the ULV Core Solo different from the normal Core Solo thats already in production in Dell's and Macs? If its not, they didn't really jump the gun.
- eadnams, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5CANT WAIT! :D
- infiniteparadox, on 10/12/2007, -30/+7How is this jumping the gun? The Yonah processors have been out in Macs since January. Is it the slower 1.06GHz and 1.3GHz speeds or the 'ultra low voltage' designation?
