- Clazor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't understand why everybody has to dog on Gates. You have to give the man some credit, it appears to me that a lot of people have just jumped on the Gateshating bandwagon for no reason. Why, because he owns a large corporation, so what, wouldn't you if you could. Besides where would computers be today without Gates, honestly. I think the idea of virtual 3d worlds on the internet sounds intriguing and I would love to walk down Amsterdam and do some windowshopping in 3d.
Stop hating for no reason. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think so.
MS plans to suggest 3 UIs in Vista. From the typical XP-like to almost 3D that will need much more resources but will bring a great usability and fun.
You know, I've never upgraded my hardware for games, but I will surely do all needed upgrades to use that almost 3D UI in Vista. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if they'll edit out all the ipods from microsoft's virtual reality of the world.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still use bob
no but seriously there is a point to too much info and i personally dont see wandering first person 3d worlds will help me much.. i have as i am sure many of you played with 3d browsers and desktops and while i think it is cool i end up quit uing them after about 10 minutes and grab something more practical..
Keep my 3d in games and my information in 2d and my ads silent. - hans863, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really hate all the guys discrediting Gates, but I hate the guys who hate Gates and also claim he is not inovative even more. I just dont get you guys.
You claim Gates is not inovative and you say only big companies will benefit from the 3D shops.
Look what microsoft did for weblogs. Because of Gates everyone in the world now has a weblog.
Come on guys, please think before you comment. - Ultim8Fury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ask yourself this, how would my favourite sites benefit from being 3D. Then go back and read the whole Gates thing again.
You'll realise that he never "got" the internet to begin with. He still doesn't "get it" now. Shopping is a small part of the net and in some cases might lend itself to a 3D environment. However in doing so you force the small guy out. The guy who runs a little web shop without the cash to create a fully 3D rendered shop matrix. This would only serve to make the rich guys richer and the small guys non-threatening and it's all wrapped up in a gimmick.
The other parts of the web like this site for instance stand to gain nothing from going 3D. Text is a 2D object and really only works in 2 dimensions.
I'll put his suggestions down to a midlife crisis rather than hate on him directly but the idea is preposterous - d3designs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not everything Gates thinks will be the "future" turns out.
(Microsoft Bob, Web TV,...) - roubitcube, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this the first time when it was called "The Lawnmower Man"
- Rojahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ten years from now we are all going to be saying, "Remember that time Gates said we'd all be using 3d browsers, haha that was great."
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Included is the coming obsolescence of paper"
Gee, that sounds familiar.. like something I heard a decade ago.
"You'll be walking around in downtown London and be able to see the shops, the stores, see what the traffic is like. Walk in a shop and navigate the merchandise,"
Honestly, I don't see how that'll be any good. When I shop online, I do it because it's faster than shopping in a "brick-and-mortar" store (ugh, dirty business term). The way things are right now, it's easier to search for products, compare products, and compare those products as offered by several different retailers. Same applies to services.
The way things are right now is still faster than if I could be instantaneously transported from physical store to physical store.
I'd like to be able to tell Gates to his face "That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard!" The idea is so rediculously poor it's beyond description.
Anyway, hasn't this junk been a topic of discussion for a number of years? What happened to VRML? - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"its pure BS because all microsoft has done all along it's life is steal and improve on other companies ideas."
Well they did invent that Ajax thing that you all keep jacking off over. - gandhii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the subject has been greatly sidestepped by a discussion of people's feelings for Gates.
IMO, The reason we're still using 2D interfaces is due to the fact that our visual interface to computers is a relatively small, flat screen. If we were using retina stereo projection or something where our "screen" became our general surroundings, then a 3D interface would make alot more sense, and would me much more useful than the 2D one we use today. - mr_england, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who knows maybe we'll all be plugging into computers via a USB port grafted onto the end of our index finger, and we could control our computers through our thoughts? sounds kinda goofy i know but you never know...
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0y'all wouldn't have the mouse and windows if it weren't for him. And the CD. He pushed all of those until they became mainstream. So he deserves to be listened to.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gonna be Johnny Mnemonic all over again
- ejp1082, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well it could turn out to be a lot like the internet in Futurama - where you have the option to dropkick advertisements and can download celebrities into sex robots. If that's the case then I'm all for it!
- daswist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was thinking more along the lines of that horrible movie, Johnny neumonic!
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03D sounds kool but come on. Why not just fly to London and be there for real. That was a pretty lame example of "walking into shops in downtown London". Maybe if he'd said something about gaming, then I'd be more excited about it.
I think he's trying to bring the world to people when people should really be going out and experiencing the world.
Not everyone has the time or money to go to London every day. - thegrinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everybody, please look at who is digging this user's articles. They are the same ones for every article he has submitted today. Using them to get it to the front page.
- slickfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude, I'm perfectly set with 2d for now, i really see bad things from this. (See "The Pedestrian" or "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury) I have a feeling all that Bill wants you to do is never leave your home.
(Maybe Microsoft wrote the first Matrix program (the one that failed miserably) and that will be Gates' demise)
think about this ***** guys, from the richest man on the earth you get this sh** - Rhift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and this is bad...how?
- Aanr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw the 3D world! Where is my flying car I was promised?
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't realize he was 50.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This would only serve to make the rich guys richer and the small guys non-threatening and it's all wrapped up in a gimmick."
The rich guys who already own big shops are not knows to switch to top technologies. And that's a field for these small guys. Knowledge is the power. - mwong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+050?
I know he's pasty and unathletic, but he looks good for his age.
Must be the geek fountain of youth (ie loose cloths and little boy haircut) - TheMJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+00.o
"In fact, according to Gates, Microsoft is already spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" to create a photorealistic 3D map of the whole world in which we can all interact."
AWESOME
Itll be like walking around in the sunshine, but doing it while sitting in the dark in front of your computer screen! yipee. - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So this is how the matrix begins.. speaking of the matrix, long before the Matrix movies there was the ShadowRun RPG (not the video game), it's similar to Dungeons & Dragons but based in a futuristing cyber (punk) tech reality, pretty awesome stuff.. in that game you could role play hacking in "the Matrix" which was a 3D Internet basically... we played this game back in '90-93 so the Internet as we know it today basically didn't even exist yet.

".... because of the criminal way he got his corporation to become so large, because of the way he has tried to hold back industry innovation, and the way his spokespeople lie to reporters and congresscritters in order to maintain their hold on power...."
...yes.
I love America.
nothing wrong with that. That's just a succesful business plan. :)
believe it or not, I admire him for that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1agree with clazor
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Besides where would computers be today without Gates, honestly."
I honestly think we would be pretty much where we are today. If Microsoft wasn't arround, other companies would take over. Maybe we would have more competition. Maybe we would get a new browser from our OS vendor more frequently than once every 7 years. Then again, maybe we would be a few years behind in OS technolgy. Who knows. - marty0577, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got an idea! throw it in water that will cool it off = microsoft's logic :)
- zentinal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"On his 50th Birthday, Bill Gates, Microsoft founder and multibillionaire, let his guard down..." Am I the only one who has a hard time imagining Mr. Gates letting his guard down? Feh, maybe it is just me.
- nebbyfoshebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03d would be cool.. but kinda useless.. because 2d would work maybe easier than like real life.. walking around and stuff for being user friendly.. but.. i think like a nice 3D user face that wasn't where you walk around but more like you ... move around like in a space ship.. lets call it the "space mouse"... well you could find stores by searching with your 3d space mouse and find stuff... i think that would be cool.. but walking around is.. kinda... not to good.. because..well.. flying is more fun.. yep.. so.. right on to bill for his in site on the web of tomorrow.. but.. i really hope it isn't that lame..
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont really trust gates with anything (ex Vista)
and the whole 3d thing seems kinda........dorky - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hans863
What? Explain... it may be true, but I didn't know about it. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I expect 3d to turn into the next 2d. This includes 3d media like foot ball in 3d.
- sekyuritei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh-oh... these are starting to look like slashdot comments...
- kyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just thought about something. If you surf the internet 3 dimensionally then what will pop ups be??? And what about other people? What if you can just go around and hit other people's virtual selves? That would rock! But then there would be virtual cops too...
- dreadlock7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03D sounds kool but come on. Why not just fly to London and be there for real. That was a pretty lame example of "walking into shops in downtown London". Maybe if he'd said something about gaming, then I'd be more excited about it.
I think he's trying to bring the world to people when people should really be going out and experiencing the world. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gates explained his vision of a 3D future as the ability to access distant places from your living room: "You'll be walking around in downtown London and be able to see the shops, the stores, see what the traffic is like. Walk in a shop and navigate the merchandise," he said. "Not in the flat, 2D interface that we have on the web today, but in a virtual reality walkthrough."
I think we all have to admit, that would be pretty freaking awesome. - pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0--------------------
In fact, according to Gates, Microsoft is already spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" to create a photorealistic 3D map of the whole world in which we can all interact.
--------------------
Drop the map into the HL2 engine, and we've got a pretty cool deathmatch! - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And the killing fact: most people think in 2 dimensions."
Except of course, all those people who use tabbed browsing, like it or not, that is in fact, 3D web-browsing. What no one seems to have cottoned onto is that your desktop is likely already 3D, only everything is viewed front on, you still have perspective, of sorts, or everything would appear on the same layer. - kyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I have to say that I absolutely hate bill gates for caring more about his business then the software he sells to people for hundreds of dollars. And the fact that I have to open up that horrid thing called "Internet Explorer" just to make sure my website works for the majority of the non geek society. But I just love it when good software and original ideas force Bill Gates to actually think of something instead of buying some body's software or stealing some body's idea.
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't this the guy whose company is still trying to push "pen computing", a miserable failure?
Now we're back to VRML, which also failed. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0screw fps, what about that site on the web you dont want youre gf to know about, think of all the happy nerds. But what would you do about all THOSE pop-ups?
I hope firefox gets in on this deal too!!
lol - hans863, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you guys never read an article We Are The Web in Wired? Once you have read that you will understand Gates, and realise he is right.
- lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Already started working on that in microsoft student. They have 3d worlds where you can walk around in =T
- Snowknight26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bonlebon:
Mr. Gates never said that 640k RAM is enough. Every developer knew that, even at the time when people thought he said it. - designdream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If a 3d mockup of a popular casino in las vegas was added in the next world of warcraft expansion, would you go in there and gamble with real money and your virtual friends?
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I better get better at aiming in FPS games so I can I can shoot them pop-up advertisement down in the future.. lol
