- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37We've been through this drill before. By indicating that Product X is only a few months away rather than a year away, they hope to influence the market not to seek out alternatives.
- Trention, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't be saying these things if there wasn't a strong sense that Vista would be delay. 80% sounds hopeful, but I have to think that it's probably much more likely, because otherwise why say anything?
- johnjreiser, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2880% chance Leopard beats Vista to market.
(20% change Duke Nukem Forever beats Vista to market.) - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Apparently Gates is a meteorologist now. When a company's CEO starts giving percentages about product releases, you know they're having some issues. He knows exactly where VIsta is in development and needs to stop *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19100% chance it doesn't matter if Leopard comes out first.
- yman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I never knew that "windows" was a person ;)
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I have a lovely bridge for sale...
-jcr - KRockXP, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19I think it's great that they are trying to get it right.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@brickballs
he still runs it for 2 more years and then even after that he is still going to be on the board of directors. - tvashtar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Longhorn *is* Vista
- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Your suggestion presumes that Microsoft is *capable* of building a new, "near-flawless" operating system. The history of Windows NT would seem to indicate that they're institutionally incapable of doing so.
MS's problems are in management. They've got to lose at least the top six layers of their org chart before they have a hope of becoming an effective engineering organization.
-jcr - Alucard90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Remember, 3D Realms claim that Duke Nukem Forever IS going to be released by the end of the year.
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17which January? 08? 09?
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14calling vista sp3 is completely ignorant, the amount of new/changed things is more than substantial enough to call it the next version.
they're dabbling in new os', like symphony and some others.
!tyme: name one company/organisation that can create a _flawless_ os, also, they _didn't_ try to rebuild from near-nothing with 2000 and 2000 is a solid/stable os. - BrainedChild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Apparently he's not reading the feedback then. Cuz this thing ain't ready. Heck, XGl has more gui goodies than Vista. It's 6gb install and I can only account for about 4gb. That's all from whatever XP cd they copied. Is the extra 2gb drivers? Nope. Is it bountiful additions of software goodness? Nope, same stuff we always had, just add in dvd making software, a calendar and a picture gallery. Is it native dvd decoders so the OS will play dvds out of the box? Heck no. Could there be pdf support? Nope. Did they license quicktime? Nope. Could some part of that 2gb be something that justifies coughing up another couple hundred to upgrade? Hells if I know? I can't figure it out.
Trust me, 5 months is not enough to make Vista "people friendly".
At least office 2007 is kicking some serious A. Its fast. Its freakin fast. office has never been fast. And it has a nice user interface. At least someone is doing a good job over in the microsoft camp. - ratrip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Then why don't you start taking your own advice...
Besides, it is not MS bashing. MS is obscenely late with what was supposed to be a watershed release of the Windows OS and paradigm. Not only are they late, they are not even delivering 25% of what was originally promised.
Longhorn was the OS that would end all others. Vista is a sorry fix up of Windows Server 2003, which itself is a souped up XP. MS has wasted years on a dud. It's amazing how much people are willing to take and how much they are willing to defend inexcusable execution on a product. If any other company was six years late on their flagship product they would have been forgotten years ago. - y2kdread, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Gates is NOT the CEO, that would be Balmer
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The original delay to January was because of a few computer manufactures, primarily HP, bitched that they wouldn't have enough time to test the new OS on their computers before the holiday season. With this announcement, they're probably thinking it was a good idea to delay, but since the beta testers are complaining, they don't know how the OEMs are going to react.
So, when Bill Gates says:
"We got to get this absolutely right. If the feedback from the beta tests shows it is not ready for prime time, I'd be glad to delay it."
You can translate it as:
"It turns out that we made the right decision to delay the product since the beta testing community has found several issues that need to be looked into. However, we are unsure how OEMs, *cough* HP *cough*, are going to react to this news and they might request a further delay." - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Gates announced on Thursday that he will gradually relinquish his current role, ceding the title of chief software architect immediately, while remaining a full-time employee for the next two years. In July 2008, he will become a part-time employee and chairman."
He still has another two years. He probably wants to see Vista out the door, and then supervise the beginning of the next Windows and/or a Windows successor. - lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7estvir,
Nice straw man argument, it doesn't make the parent wrong though. Your posts are consistently some of the dumbest posts I ever come across on digg, and your biases are ridiculous. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What color is the sky on your planet?
-jcr - kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I believe they're being more sensible than previously. at least by not providing a concrete release date they can work as long as they wish to make sure there are no security issues for which the same people here who are bashing them for delaying will be bashing their product for being insecure..
- tvashtar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In what way is Vista currently better than OS X? I mean give me a broad argument which justifies your sweeping point.
- doolittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8no kidding, I will believe it when the release candidiates are out.
Until then, it's with a grain of salt... - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Not necessarily. If the preview at WWDC blows people away, then yes, there's a strong chance of Steve calling for an early feature freeze, and shipping the product ASAP, which is pretty much what happened with Tiger.
If the current state of Leopard is far from ready though, they're not going to rush it just to beat Longwind.
-jcr - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@lnxaddct
I agree, just didn't want to be the only one to say that. Well, estvir and r2d7, now that's a team. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4August 7, 2006 is going to be one interesting day. I'm almost dizzy at the thought.
I'll confess: I need Vista to be a rousing success (even though I hate MS) for one reason only - No one deserves XP. XP is crap. The prospect that Vista could fully apologize for the crimes XP has inflicted on the world entire just fills me with hope and optimism.
In a perfect world, I envision multiple OSes - all equal in quality, functionality, practicality, style & substance. A world where lil' Vista children and lil' Leopard children will hold hands and play in the same joyful playground. A world where Windows users aren't called "Kool-Aid Drinkers" and Mac users aren't compared to the Third Reich.
I have a dream.
Then I wake up. Bill Gates, after selling the entire world on mediocrity for almost 20 years, is a-sneakin' out the back door like Santa Clause on crack with a bag of money on his back.
I'm naive. I want ALL manufactures to make good, quality product. That's not our reality so, some of us are gonna have to stick with what does it best for us.
MS made a grand living off of people who don't care about quality. I sort of resent that. - Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Gates: "I'd be glad to delay it."
I seriously doubt that. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I wonder who cares.
And I wonder how well Boot Camp will be working by then. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Microsoft Vista its just Windows xp 2005 er 2006 er 2007 er 200X Does anyone really need vista? No.
Does anyone have any projects that depending on vista besides Microsoft? No.
(Halo) for the PC is said it will only work under Vista.
They can take there time.
The only ones pissed about the delay is the investors and the project managers having to
fight with the stupid OS.
With the securty changes and the kernal code changes do you really expect most of you applications
to even work with this os? - tyme, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Because their legs locked up and they're trying to reboot their brains to see if it helps.
- tbye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Failure of Nurv
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And of course DNF is going to be so blown-your-pants-off awesometastic that all will be forgiven, and it'll be Vista Compatible.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7So far I have seen NOTHING that entices me to buy Vista. To me, it just looks like XP with OSX-like visuals. Unless MS is going to add some killer features soon, I'm going with a Mac Mini and Boot Camp.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+580% chance Leopard comes first? More like 100%.
I think Apple would rather release it with a few rough edges and get some software updates out afterwords than let Microsoft beat them to the punch. And I don't think they'll even have to. - moylan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3>Gates: Vista "80%" chance for January release
20% chance of snow in hell? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ive been useing vista beta 64 bit for a while, once you turn off "account protection" or whatever, its not so bad, it runs 64 and 32 bit apps better than xp pro 64 bit did. But, Other than a few decent new features, i really see no reason to jump to it. It will be like WIN ME was to Windows 98
- tvashtar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Amen Office 2007 is a vast improvement, Word 2007 in particular is an excellent innovative piece of software.
- brandonr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8In other words, it will only be 80% complete when they release it in January.
- DCGUY12, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5So when's the release date of Leopard? Why is this not discussed with equal disdain since we don't know the release date as well?
- TheJenks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Erm when does MS actually listen to beta testers???
Loads of us complained about the circle start button and asked for an alternative but I guess someone at MS must be a big fan as its still there. - shitfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+485 % chance that 95% of the predictions that have a 80% certainty do not make us any smarter
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ NSResponder
Please, let me clarify:
When I mentioned "capable", I was merely referring to the near infinite funding MS is sitting on (Recent European woes withstanding).
I agree: With decent management, they could take this funding and do most of the things I suggested. It's because of their mismanagement, it'll probably never happen. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3100% don't give a *****
- SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My sentiments exaclty!
80% chance of Vista being released in January...
100% likelihood that I will NEVER ever buy VIsta, or allow it into my company.
I have avoided XP, and I certainly will not waste my time and money on any new Microsoft O/S's. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't be saying these things if there wasn't a strong sense that Vista would be delay. 80% sounds hopeful, but I have to think that it's probably much more likely, because otherwise why say anything?"
I think you are right and they are setting everyone up for something they already know. my bets are on March 2007. I can't see it being earlier because my experiences of Vista appear to show it as being miles and miles short of being anywhere near ready for prime time.
even then I'm sure they will have to leave some of it unfinished - and do as they always do and hope to fix it with a service pack at some point down the line. - jejones, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I think that Gates needs to put on a cap with moose antlers for the next announcement, and hire June Foray:
BG: Hey, Rocky! Watch me pull Vista out of my--uh, hat!
JF: Again?! That trick never works!
BG: Presto!
[BG pulls something out of the hat, which turns out to be a leopard.
The leopard roars.]
JF: Wrong hat!
BG: I take a 7 1/2. - ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If the feedback from the beta tests shows it is not ready for prime time, I'd be glad to delay it."
I had numerous failed install attempts, missing drivers, and overall bad beta experience. If they ship by January I would be amazed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hell, I've been telling them to lose those icons in the Administrative Tools section of control panel since Windows 95. But have they listened? HELL no. They're still using those Win95 leftovers for Vista Beta 2 even though they revamped the ENTIRE icon set (other than those of course).
Unbelievable. - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes... The story you submitted is a dupe since this one was first.
Besides, what are you accomplishing by pointing that out? This one is getting dugg so this one is the one that people want to see. -
