- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36It's not nice to go around calling people j00s.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26There are plenty of free homebrew games.... those are legal.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15That's nice of Lik-Sang to say "US$ 149.90", but then if you add it to your cart, it magically becomes
"US$ 179.90" - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Wii takes SD.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13No, they're not lost. This is because of the damn DIGG bug that causes you to get redirected to the WRONG page when you log in.
I wish they'd fix it. - heymark, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Wow. I had no idea. Thank you very much.
Are you lost? - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I could see myself buying this. For the tons of "home brewed" roms I have.
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12OneMadRssn, although the NES hardware itself is public domain, "all NES ROMs" are not public domain (which should be obvious considering all games weren't released the same year that the NES came out). In fact there was an article just a couple days ago about how Nintendo was running into licensing trouble on some games because the original publishers are no longer in business and have sold off the rights.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That's not the company's website - that's a USA based store. The company is Korean, and it's website is http://www.gp2x.com/
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12"NES is public domain last i checked; yes its that old."
Really? Cuz public domain only happens 70 years AFTER the creater has died. So Shigeru Miyamoto died in 1936??
"so all NES ROMs are no longer breaking the law. I don't think anyone gives two ***** about stealing old sega games, and SNES already made its money so no one feels bad about that either"
Plus, Nintendo is re-selling their NES - N64 rom collections on Wii's virtual console, so they're not forgotten about. They're still assests to the company. - noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The GP2X has been out for about a year, it's just that more places are selling it now. It's a great little device, and it's a retrogamer's dream with all the emus on it.
Best site for info is probably www.gp32x.com which is a community site for GP32 & GP2X owners and developers - crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He'd berate you for playing a game while driving.
- adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7But can it play Nethack?
- neophenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Are you being sarcastic, because if not:
"The GP2X plays homebrew games, Roms from NES, SNES, GB, GBA, PSX, Genesis, Atari, Game Gear, and more"
So yes, infact there ARE "tooooooooooooooooons of games for this thing" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7To sum this all up:
ROMs are illegal unless you own the original, and even that may be gray area-ish.
From the top of my head, Emulators are illegal if they contain copyright code and you don't own the original (again, not %100 sure). I think Emulators that have been reverse engineered would be ok...
The GP2X has some commercial games (that aren't free).
There are free homebrew games. - shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There definatly is one going, just google "MAME GP2X"
- colmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6don't even joke like that. i lost 3 years of my spare time to that damn little game... finally ascended a valkyrie and was able to quit. there's a little nagging voice in my head that says "now you can do a wiiiiiizard" and i think, no, no goddammit, no
nethack is evil. i can't imagine the damage it would do my life if it were portable. - eclipseCDN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Technically if you owned the original game you can legally use the ROM. Buy like a hundred game off ebay for 20 bucks then d/l the ROM. Congratulations, your legal. That said, if you stole them wouldn't anyone enforce the anti-piracy laws? If a police officer pulled you over and saw you playing Sonic on that thing would he say anything?
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5why yes it can
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, it can play NetHack
http://www.gp32x.com/index.php?artc=2437 - RaderLabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does anyone know if there's a version of MAME that will run on this...if so, I'm in!
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ummm, yeah, I don't think that SD and CF are proprietary, and if they are, at least they can be used on more than one system or even type of electronic.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Kinda odd how the import stores are sometimes cheaper than the domestic ones. Mark-up??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At least they are cheap + common, but it might be nice if you could plug it in to recharge. Maybe it has a battery pack accessory?
- guigouz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8wish it had wifi.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It has A, B, X, Y, L, and R. I count 6 buttons. Unless you mean 6 MORE buttons that are only for fighting games. You silly goose.
- jfence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes.. it supposedly does.
http://www.talfi.net/gp32_franxis/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also, I thought I read on there that it has good/direct support in the SDK for the SDL libraries, which means that a lot of current homebrew has the potential to run on it fairly easily.
- 1101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, you need to buy some really good rechargeables. I modded a game-boy power adapter to work with my gp2x, it was fairly painless. snes roms still need help, but things like duke3d, doom and quake run pretty damn well. Of course the batteries last a hell of a lot longer when your not playing them.
Someone on a gp2x forum was discussing how it may be possible to get wifi on the thing if you use some sort of SD-adapter, i don't think anybody got it working yet though. Also the USB host feature they were making is a possibility for that sort of thing too, dunno if it exists yet. I anticipate the new features (psx, breakouts etc) coming to the console as if it hits mainstream i think they could make it big.
Please note the playing times listed on most gp2x selling websites are way too long in my experience, my batteries don't last three quarters of what they say. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11No N64? That sucks.. Still pretty cool, I like the fact that it takes cheap SD memory, unlike the PSP which takes proprietary piles of crap.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Here's a related article, since it's not host enabled.
http://digg.com/mods/How_to_enable_USB_host_mode_on_a_GPX2_ - SmoothHeavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And USB storage devices.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Portable SNES and PSX is a bit slow for now, but they're working on it...
- yourwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is really cool. The fact that it can play all those roms alone has be sold!
- JamesGlover, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I've had my eye on the GP2X for about a month now. The UK retailer (http://gp2x.co.uk/) has it for £124.99 (inc. Vat) which is higher than some other retailers, but you avoid the risk of various customs charges. Service from them is meant to be very good, and they should soon be shipping the MKII, which has a few minor harware changes to address a few criticisms of earlier models.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@tyrone:
There's no gray area to having the ROM image if you own the game. Copyright law allows you one archival backup of anything you own, so if you were inclined to purchase a ROM reader and burn a copy to a fresh EPROM, there's nothing illegal with that method. The fact that you download a ROM that someone else has ripped isn't relevant, since you still own the original and you're downloading your archival backup from another source rather than copying it yourself. No lawyers would fight this since it'd be pointless because 1. there are commercial ROM readers you can buy to make backups for yourself and 2. you own the original and are well within your rights to 'obtain' a backup, and 3. the company you purchased the game from made no provisions for you to obtain a backup copy from them.
AFAIK this branch of copyright law has been around for a very long time (in internet years). Back when I used to buy games for my Commodore 64, all of the Super Snapshot cartridges and other commercial software packages which allowed copying copy-protected media mentioned the provision about personal backups in their paperwork. While you're pretty much on the honor system when it comes to roms (i.e. do you REALLY own 2000+ arcade boards with roms), some older games simply have expired copyrights or unobtainable rights, which makes them freeware.
Think about this: you seek to obtain copyrights, and are unable to determine the rights holder after a long discovery process. If you do go ahead and copy something without rights, who will sue you if you're found out? - colmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it runs linux, it'll be able to run pygame, a pretty awesome and easy game library in python (which is a pretty awesome and easy language) so any middle schooler with a few months of spare time should be able to bake up a brickout clone at least.
This could be pretty rad for indie games. - JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The community doesn't have a built in hard drive yet, but with a breakout box, they have managed to add in USB Host capabilities.
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It does have 6 buttons. It has left and right shoulder buttons as well as the four face buttons. Roughly the same layout as the SNES controller, which was pretty decent for SFII.
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just to debate some things in this parent comment. So far, I've not had a ROM fail me yet. And as for finding the emulators, first I'd try http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi . If you can't find particularly anything there (and thanks EvilDragon!) then try perusing the forums at http://www.gp32x.com . Just be mindful to check the faqs, as the folks in the forum have suffered many of the same questions over and over. All in all, it isn't entirely difficult to use whatsoever, due to excellent documentation by the various software creators for it.
- ripter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dang it, I wish I would have read your guys comment before I dugg ShadowMoses. Oh well
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"When I turn it on, lines just come across the screen and it fuzzes up,"
The batteries are flat.
I know, it's an odd thing for the screen to do, but put some new batteries in and all is well. I've come to prefer the groovy screen dance compared to it just going blank. :) - smeep2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Be careful with the UK retailer (http://gp2x.co.uk/). I ordered one from there. They charged my credit card but never delivered the goods. Had to run the whole charge-back gambit.
- kevinmoore, on 06/13/2009, -2/+4I think you mean "gamut", or maybe even "gauntlet".
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be SOOO much better if it had six buttons for fighting games.
- jfence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I ordered one from them earlier this week with the optional TV cable and power supply. It's supposed to ship out today (5/19) or next Monday (5/22).
- h4lfl1ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is a good resource for almost everything you need to know about the GP2X
http://www.mygp2x.com/faq/
When it gets Wifi im buying it!
arthur: I dont think the company has loads of cash like all the other 'good' handhelds..Everyone has to start somewhere. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What it actually lacks is Wi-Fi and GSM. With a ported firefox based browser and a Voip software it may be a true rival to psp and other handheld devices.
- JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SD itself isn't exactly expensive. Given the price of this system, 64MB I thought was pretty generous. I honestly think that 64MB is the best place to put it in terms of storage. Lots of room to work with firmware upgrades, but not enough room to use it exclusively and kill the onboard NAND.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WTF? Lik Sang sells the Second Edition. That's what I bought. Four. Months. Ago.
