- Eth4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What if I want to mail a virus to a friend to look at? :(
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Moving my 'rents to gmail months ago cut down on serious technical support time with them, this will just make it even better although they do know not to open attachments unless they were expecting them from someone they know.
That and firefox, I haven't had to touch their machine for months now. I am suprised it took google this long though to add the feature. - aemaeth7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What if I want to mail a virus to a friend to look at? :("
Umm.... not .exe form? (Duh, rename it).
Or at least zip it, and then rar it, and then split it with hjsplit in to a couple of files, and then rename those files to diff extensions. O_o If you're really that paranoid not to get caught by Google/antivirus XD LOL - frozendice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because you can see what is in a .zip file even if it's encrypted. The index is unencrypted.
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats awesome! I just hope it dosent restrict what you send, and warns you but still allows you to get it if you want.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1okay.
- squitiere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope all that scanning doesn't slow the message transfers
- dspiral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if gmail will let us send and receive .exe's now. even if I zip them, gmail still denies them. I know it may sound crazy, but there are few instances I have legitimately wanted to send an .exe, from work to home, etc.
- kev26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya, it's a version of Sofos AntiVirus. I know one of the salesman involved in the sale to Google. He said the Google sales negotiator is a serious bulldog. All the Sofos sales people were scared of dealing with him. Too funny.

I used to know someone who would collect virii

if you're e-mailing viruses around, unencrypted, you have bigger things to worry about than just your intended recipient... ;)

Is it not my right? Is it illegal to send virii? What law is that? If its not a law, then gmail and whoever else can get the ***** up off my back.. - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0saweeeet.
- cafemocha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope there will be an option to disable the scanning... why would you want to send an exe file anyway?
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully we'll be able to send .exe's now. There have been several legitimate cases in which I've wanted to send one.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does that mean that I WILL be able to send applications as attachments. Since you are now prohibited from an application as an attachment witch is annoying for me (although you can just change the file extension) it would be nice ( but unlikely ) if you would be only prevented from attaching malware and allowed to attach safe programs.
- LuisTheCuban, on 03/12/2009, -0/+0Ive been using kaspersky for about 6 years now, and so far ive never gotten a virus, except that one time i paused it and forgot to resume it again and yeah.......
anyways i found this antivirus review if hope is usefull
http://osassistance.com/antivirus.html - hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this something yahoo has had already for years?
- fkuall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to send .exes in gmail, simply rar them
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome!
I hope they'd hurry up with Google Calendar already, jeez. I'm sick and tired of Microsoft Outlook messing up my calendars. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Morrog, if you'd submitted that as an article, I would've Dugg it. Interesting read.

How does anti-virus scanning work?
Each time you send and receive attachments, Gmail automatically scans them for viruses.
If a virus is found in an attachment you've received, our system will attempt to remove it, or clean the file, so you can still access the information it contains. If the virus can't be removed from the file, you won't be able to download it.
If a virus is found in an attachment you're trying to send, you won't be able to send the message until you remove the attachment. - Carbito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder why this was not available upon release...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All good anti-virus software now can scan the inside of compressed archieves. Hell, mabey some can even determine wether a file is exe or not by reading its PE file header.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Good. I also like that because google is webmail based, you can't unknowingly install viruses just by recieving their mail. Dugg."
Unless you're using IE... :) (any crack site lol)

"That's because you can see what is in a .zip file even if it's encrypted. The index is unencrypted"
I beleieve there are other formats that do encrypt the headers. - rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The number of "sweet"s and "awesome"s outnumber "it's about time" by at least 3:1. Amazing. Oh wait... I forgot. This is DiggEverythingGoogleAppleFirefoxAJAX.com.
Luckily, most people who've known about GMail / gotten early invites are fairly tech savvy and should already have decent desktop virus protection. But now that my MOM has an account... :) I think they should have had this up and running 6 months ago.
And Amen, Brother to the removal of .exe restriction. - CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GOOGLE IS TAKING OVER!!!
;) - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have never had a worm sent to my gmail box, maybe my email providor blocks them are there end. What would be really cool is if they get rid of the "onbehalf of" junk when you send an email from another email address in Gmail. If anyone needs to know that its coming from gmail then they can check the headers!
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't matter to me, I'm like Dvorak. I GET NO SPAM! lol But just in case, its about time they added this.
- pierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I'd love for them to release this rumored Calendar integrated with Gmail. Thats the one thing I liked about yahoo mail.
- fletcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have absolutely no problems with viruses on Gmail. Only with spam, which automagically goes into the spam folder.
- fibber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Change your extension to a .txt and send it. Then the recipient can change it back and voila. Bob est ton oncle.
- madd_matt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well two days ago it caught a worm in my gmail box, so it is there right now.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried to send a program called Castle of the Winds to a friend of mine (Think Diablo, super old school style). It was in a zip folder. Gmail told me I couldn't send it. So I tried putting the zip file in yet another zip folder. Gmail still wouldn't let me send a double zipped executable. So I got into hotmail and sent her the game from there. God I hate hotmail. I try to use it as little as possible.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I didn't know viruses in webmail was even a problem.
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, its about time too

http://www.mediahug.com/ - RudyJ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Ohhhh all the G-sheep must be so happy now! All they had to do was give up the last bit of privacy they had to get a few Gigs of e-mail storage they will never use and now they even get a free virus scan which all the other online mail services already had, I'm sooo happy for them. /end sarcasm
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Gmail doesn't let you send exe file even if you wrap it in a zip file.
That's why Gmail is gay. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0your face is gay
